    A New Baby
Introduce the dog to all the new things you get for a new baby: let it investigate the crib, baby clothes and that sort of thing. Dogs generally seem to know that something is up, especially as the woman gets closer to her time. After the baby is born, but before you bring it home, see if you can take something home for the dog to smell, like a blanket or an undershirt the baby had on. Let the dog smell it thoroughly. When the baby comes home, try to hold everything else normal, feeding time, any morning walks, the like. When you bring the baby in, put the dog on a down-stay and introduce the dog to the baby. Have one of the parents hold the baby in their lap and let the dog sniff the baby. Let it lick the baby if you're up to that, but do NOT let the dog nuzzle (push with its nose) or paw at the baby. It is important to introduce the dog to the baby. This makes it clear to the dog that the baby is a new member of the pack. If you exclude the dog from the baby, it may try to attack this "non-member" to protect its pack. Include the dog in the daily routine with the baby. Give it the same, if not a little more, amount of attention it always got. You do not want it to feel like it has been displaced or ignored in favor of the baby.

    60. Hit The Trail - Grand Canyon And The Southwest
Former Grand Canyon ranger talks about hiking and backpacking at the Grand Canyon and in the desert southwest. Learn what equipment and preparation is necessary to have a successful and enjoyable time while on your outdoor adventure.
    http://hitthetrail.com/
Hello and welcome! Spring is showing up all over Arizona. Daffodils are blooming in the high country and the desert landscape is starting to fill up with wildflowers. Lupine, brittlebush, and globemallow are lining the highways and the desert is green from the recent rains. This third week of March is promising to bring us a little more rain and snow, although no more than an inch of accumulation of snow is expected in the high country over the next few days. Also, if you are planning on hiking down to Phantom Ranch or Bright Angel Campground anytime in the coming months, I would strongly suggest that you carry some form of water purification with you, either in the form of iodine tablets or a water filter. There have been many waterline breaks in the Phantom area, and each time there is a new break, you must get your water supply from Bright Angel Creek. Springtime is especially bad for breaks as snowmelt causes many rockslides that take out the waterline. Fortunately, the creek runs alongside both Phantom Ranch and the campground, but you will need to purify it before drinking. This applies to both campers and lodge guests! I recommend always carrying iodine tablets in your first aid kit, no matter what the circumstances. I am starting to hear from a lot of people as they make their plans for a spring trip to Grand Canyon. I've had several questions about the North Rim. Please be aware that the North Rim is closed until mid-May. The North im is closed every winter from the first major snowfall in late autumn until the road is plowed again in mid-May. Visitor services, such as restaurants, gift shops, and lodging, are open from mid-May to mid-October.
