2.9 FALCONRY
Falconry has been practised in England since Saxon times. The invention of the gun and the enclosure of common land led to its rapid decline, although enthusiasts have kept the sport alive in Britain. In recent years there has been a dramatic increase in the number of birds of prey in captivity and in the number of people who keep them, frequently more for free-flying or exhibition than for true falconry, the pursuit of quarry. The principal reason is the success of captive breeding, which has ensured that sought-after foreign species no longer have to be imported. Lanner and saker falcons, red-tailed buzzards and Harris hawks are among the most popular non-native birds that are bred in captivity in this country for falconry. As they have become more readily available so they have become less expensive. This also applies to native species like the peregrine falcon. It is the common objective of Government and responsible falconers to achieve sustainable captive-breeding to avoid the unnecessary use of wild birds. 2.9.1 Escaped birds

It's purpose is to diffuse knowledge of falconry as it is practiced in Scandinvavia, the conditions of falconry in Scandinavia, . If some of the readers are inspired to take up falconry themselves, please consider that you do not become a falconer on the internet - nor by reading ever so many of the books referred to on these pages. Most of the articles are written from the assumption that the reader have little or no knowledge of falconry at all. Falconers might find the addresses, the booklist in "Bibliotheca Accipitraria", the hawking stories in "Round the Smoking Room Fire", the art in "Galleria Accipitraria", the pages on legislation, culture and history worthwhile.

Falconry in Denmark My peregrine "Esther". (Photo: Ole Kramer) "Hillo, ho, ho, boy. Come, bird, come..."
Hamlet, Act I, Sc. 5 Falconry is one of the most ancient means of hunting still practised. 4000 years it's history can be traced back in history. In Scandinavia archaeological evidence has dated it's existence as far back as to the 5th century.
Through history several Danish kings have practised the sport, though the trapping and distribution of gyrfalcons from Iceland and Norway have probably been of greater significance than the hunting itself. A Royal Falconry was established in the 16th century. It was abolished in the early 19th century, and since then falconry have been anonymous in Denmark. Not until the early 1970's a club maintaining the interests of falconry was established. It had a short and chaotic life, and ended it's days in the early 1990's being a club for different groups of people interested in raptors and owls. In 1991 the Danish Hawking Club was formed. The club only maintains the interests of falconry.

E-mail: falconry@highlandescape.com Castle Falconry, providing a unique falconry experience in the Highlands. Falconry traces its origins back several thousand years and has been the passion of some of the most influential people in history. Aristocratic and romantic, this ancient sport has retained its mystique right up to the present day and few images are as powerful as a trained hawk sitting sharp eyed on a gloved fist. To watch a falconer's hawk in action can be thrilling, but to get out into the countryside and fly such a bird yourself is an experience without equal; the feel of the hawk riding your hand and the excitement as it launches into flight makes for a spellbinding encounter. At Castle Falconry we are confident of being able to make your first taste of falconry unforgettable. Leading the team is internationally acclaimed falconer and dog trainer Andy Hughes who has personally trained over 70 various birds of prey during the last 28 years, including Eagles, Falcons, Hawks and Owls. Under his guidance you are guaranteed to get the very most of your outing. Groups are kept small and this ensures plenty of involvement, at the same time promoting a friendly, informal atmosphere. A period of instruction will help you feel comfortable around hawks and teach you some basic handling skills. Then it's off into the surrounding countryside to put theory into practice.

A warm welcome to The Falconry Experiences web site Please note Our hours of business are 9:00 am - 5:30 pm including Sunday We now have several teams of expert Falconers available with the ability to show you game hawking at it's best, weather and season permitting ! Based in the gently rolling hills of the Northamptonshire countryside, we are within easy reach of London, Birmingham , Manchester and York and other Major Cities such as Nottingham, Leicester, York, Peterborough, Cambridge and Ipswich to name a few. We specialize in providing one day introduction courses that which we call experiences almost every day of the year, weather permitting. We also offer one day hunting experiences using Peregrine falcons and Peregrine Hybrids during the season( 1st October -1st February) Please note that all our birds fly free and most of them hunt, which is of course what they do in the wild. It is for this reason that we have a smaller amount of birds as they are highly motivated , getting plenty of exercise. It is also for this reason that we do not have a large collection of birds and exotic species such as Owls, Eagles and Vultures as these cannot be effectively used for proper falconry purposes.

Home page of Tileukabyl Esembekuly My name is Tileukabyl Esembekuly. I'm the farmer. I live with my family in Central Kazakhstan, in the heart of Eurasia. Steppe, hills. Wilderness, places not touched by a civilization.
With my son Abay we bring up birds of prey - falcons, hawks, golden eagles. Falconry is present man's business. Here there are enough fair games: black-cocks, ducks, partridges and pigeons. With golden eagle I hunt on hare and fox. It is possible to hunt and on wolf.
Since 1995 we spend international competitions "Salburn" on the hunting with birds of prey and kazakh borzoi (tazy) basins. Here already there were the visitors from Austria, England, Belgium, Germany, France, Kazakhstan and Russia.
If you not a hunter, come simply to visit on while yet virgin to a nature.
I have the spacious hunting house, horses, hunting weapon, ecologically pure products and good kitchen. Welcome,

FALCONRY
Although I spent most of my childhood in Norfolk, in the village of Stalham, near Hickling Broad (a favorite place for bird watching), I never had much interest in becoming a "twitcher". Then, when I moved from primary school, I found that my new school had four "Houses" - Bittern, Gannet, Grebe and Kestrel, (all native to the Norfolk Broads). I became a member of Kestrel House. This was the start of my interest in birds of prey! Here in Yorkshire, I have recently discovered a great centre for the conservation of these magnificent creatures.
Set in dramatic limestone surroundings, the York- shire Dales Falconry and Conservation Centre is the first privately owned Falconry Centre in the North of England.
The centre aims to educate and to raise public awareness to the threat of extinction many birds of prey now face. Hopefully, by successful captive breeding and educational programmes, these superb creatures will be saved for the benefit of future generations. There are many species of Birds of Prey from around the world at the Centre. When we last visited we saw Vultures, Eagles, Hawks, Falcons and Owls. A great deal of thought, time and effort has gone into the housing of the birds, trying to re-create their natural habitats. This involved the transportation of 350 tons of limestone boulders for cliff faced fronted aviaries resembling a cluster of famhouse buildings. For us, the biggest thrill was seeing "Andy" the Andean Condor laboriously take to the air. With a wingspan of 10 feet 6 inches he is one of the biggest birds in the world. Andy and his pal "Ringo" the Griffon Vulture are flown daily, weather conditions permiting. The Falcons contrast dramatically — cutting through the air at speeds approaching 120mph, stooping to the lure — to the fluttering silent flight of the beautiful Barn Owl. Audience participation is encouraged (our daughter, Mandy, was privileged to handle and fly a Falcon on our last visit).
