All the rage at fitness centers around the country, this workout borrows moves from the Thai sport of kickboxing to make participants work up a sweat. A typical hour-long class will take place in the center's aerobics studio. With everyone facing the mirror, a teacher leads the group through specific punches and kicks, usually to the beat of dance-club music. The moves are worked into swiftly executed combinations (for example: jab, cross punch, hook, uppercut, front kick). Some teachers mix in a few minutes of jumping rope (often as a warm-up) and conditioning drills reminiscent of high-school gym class (jumping jacks, sideways scooting steps). What are the benefits?

Born and raised in San Francisco

was Frank's first Martial Arts instructor, his mother Elba Navarro, a vocalist, was his dancing enthusiast, and "Abuela", the late Ramoncita, known as "El Ciclon de San Francisco" was an outstanding singer/entertainer who definitely inspired Frank's musical career. Abuela At t he tender age of 9, Frank and his sister, Rubie, won several Talent Shows with folklore dancing. Throughout his teen-hood, Frank won several Martial Art Championships in various cities. Simultaneously, he established himself as an "up-n-coming" musician and was the leader of a "SALSA" band named "SANGRE NUEVA" at 19 years old! In the midst of developing his skills, Frank became a master "break dancer"! He organized and led a group called "The Floor Survivors". They won several competitions throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Floor Survivors
Eventually, Frank attained a black-belt in Kenpo Karate. Currently, he is a 4th Degree Black Belt and has studied the following styles: Wu-Shu, Northern Silum, Judo, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Although it may seem as if every new exercise trend is hailed as "a full-body workout," these classes can come pretty close. If you do the punches with precision and power, you'll strengthen your upper body and eventually see more muscle definition. The kicks will strengthen your legs, especially the hamstrings (the muscles that run down the backs of your thighs). And the kneeing move (a strike in which you thrust your bent knee upward) will firm your abdominal muscles; in fact, all of the moves, when done correctly, will make your torso into a solid base that lets you do everyday tasks more easily - whether you're hoisting a heavy box into your attic crawl space or shoving open a window that always sticks.

    This enjoyable exercise decreases stress, hones reflexes and boosts endurance and muscle power. But, no matter how fit you are, you should begin this type of exercise with care:
    • Even if you frequently cross-train, take it easy when first kick-boxing so your body can adapt to this unfamiliar exercise. Make your first few sessions less than an hour each. Begin your kick-boxing sessions with basic stretches and a light cardiovascular warm-up.
    Typical routine:
    • Repetitive punches alternating with hand strikes , kicks and then a combination of all three of these activities. After the main section of the routine, stretches and floor exercise can be used as a cool-down. Don't wear weights or hold dumbbells when throwing punches.
