Why is it so popular? It's the national sport. It is gaining, not losing popularity.
Our guide to bullfighting in Spain
In the Mediterranean, sacrificing bulls is a practice dating back to pre-historic times. In Greece for example, killing the minotaur is symbolic of a bullfight. Bullfighting as we know it today, started in the village squares, and became formalised, with the building of the bullring in Ronda in the late 18th century. From that time, it began to follow a particular sequence of events: the entrance of the bull, the picador, the banderilleros, and finally the matador (bullfighter). Many of the picadors' horses were injured in the early days, so these heavy horses now wear protection.

Bullfighting: A Tradition of Tragedy
At best, the term "bullfighting" is a misnomer, as there is usually little competition between the sword of a nimble matador (Spanish for "killer") and a confused, maimed, psychologically tormented, and physically debilitated bull. Supporters justify the act by calling it a tradition. Opponents maintain that no matter what the history, bullfighting is torturous animal mutilation and slaughter. Commercialism One of the biggest supporters of bullfighting is the tourism industry. Travel agents and bullfight promoters portray the fight as a festive and fair competition. What they do not reveal is that the bull never has a chance to defend himself, much less to survive. Many prominent former bullfighters report that the bulls are intentionally debilitated with beatings to the kidneys and heavy weights hung around their necks for weeks before the fight.1 The Brigitte Bardot Foundation, a French group that opposes bullfighting, describes other methods of debilitating the bulls: "Most of the time the animals go into the arena blinded because they are put in darkness for 48 hours" before the confrontation. "Then people hit the head of the animal with bags of sand—long and violently—to deprive (the bull) of (his) senses ..." 2 One common practice is to "shave" the bulls’ horns by sawing off a few inches. Bulls’ horns, like cats’ whiskers, help the animals navigate, so a sudden change impairs the bull’s coordination. Shaving is illegal, so the horns are sometimes inspected by a veterinarian after a fight. But in 1997, the Confederation of Bullfighting Professionals, including Spain’s 230 matadors, went on strike in opposition to these veterinary inspections. The strikers claimed veterinarians were "not experienced enough" to inspect the bulls.3 However, most recognize this as just another aspect of the corruption that infiltrates a business that brings in more than $1 million annually to each professional matador. In 1996, Spain tallied $1.4 billion in ticket sales.4

ABC (Anti Bullfighting Campaign) International was founded in 1993 by ADDA (Spain) and Foundation Committee Anti Stierenvechten (CAS, The Netherlands). It's aim is to become a source of information and updates about what is happening in the world of bullfighting for those against it. We exchange information, campaign strategies, materials, and organize petitions, fundrising, demonstrations, news letters, statistics, etc. We publish a special bulletin every three months with updated news about bullfighting.
News from Holland Postbus 1312. Utrecht 3500. The Netherlands) Campaigns in non-bullfighting countries are just as important as those in countries that still allow bullfights. International cooperation is of utmost importance. Our information campaigns have the aim of arriving at as many people as possible, and our ultimate goal is the abolition of bullfighting. Information usually leads to a change in attitude: neutrals become opposed. Our target groups are the public, the media, tour operators and promoters of bullfighting. Specially important is the information given to tourists in airports or other departure or arrival points. On the other hand, ABC Holland organizes school projects with the video "The Dance of Death". In addition, we always response to those broadcasts and publications (television programs, travel guides, newspapers, magazines) that present bullfighting in a favourable light.

Despite protests, a bullfighting revival
May 4, 1996
Web posted at: 7:25 a.m. EDT MADRID, Spain (CNN) In recent years, the Spanish tradition of bullfighting has come under attack from animal rights activists who say that slowly stabbing a bull to death is a sadistic pastime. They say the 25,000 bulls killed in the ring each year don't stand a chance against the matadors with whom they share the ring. But for many Spaniards, the bullfight is a proud part of their heritage, one in which they see emotion and joy, danger and glory. They call it an art form that evokes the most basic issue: survival. The Spanish ritual, an expression, perhaps, of man's domination of the wild, is experiencing a revival. Siobhan Darrow visited an academy where young bullfighters are trained, and returned with this look at a part of Spanish culture of which Spaniards remain proud.

Rough Guide To Bullfighting
(A Thumbnail Sketch)
The regulations on bullfighting define in exacting detail the structure and procedure of bullfíghting in Spain.
  • Six bulls are selected and allocated in pairs to three individual matadores (bullfighters). This takes place at noon on the day of the fight.
  • The impresario (promotors) contracts matadores who engage their own assistants. They dress in trajes de luces (suits of lights) in hotels of the town during the day of the corrida (bullfight).

Origins and History of Bullfight
Bullfighting is certainly one of the best known, although at the same time most polemical Spanish popular customs.
This Fiesta could not exist without the Toro Bravo , a species of bull of an archaical race that is only conserved in Spain. Formerly this bull's forebears, the primitive urus , were spread out over wide parts of the world. Many civilizations revered to them, the bull-cultus at the Greek island Creta is quite well-known. The Bible reports on sacrifices of bulls in honour to the divine justice. Also in the religious ceremonies of Iberian tribes living in Spain in prehistorical times bulls played an important part.
The origins of the Plaza , bullring, probably are not the Roman amphitheaters but the Celt-Iberian temples where those ceremonies were held. In the province of Soria, close to Numancia, one of them is conserved and it is supposed that there bulls were sacrificed to the Gods.
While the religious cultus to the bull goes back to Iberians , it were the Greek and Roman influences that converted it into a spectacle.

Bullfighting is the most indefensible type of animal abuse. Our footage shows in horrifying detail what happens at these events. Dare yourself to look at the following videos and slide shows. You will not be able to deny the cruelty and pointlessness of what you see here.
1.3 MB Blood pours out of gashes on a bull's body as the animal tries to move away from harassing matadors.
2.2 MB A cowardly picador slams a spear into a bull from relative safety on top of a horse. The bull attacks the horse, believing it be the source of his torment. The horse is used as a living shield by a thug who doesn't know the meaning of integrity, bravery, or a fair fight.
1.2 MB A bull in obvious physical distress can do nothing but stand and bleed, with several decorative tags still hanging from his mutilated body. During it all, sickeningly festive band music plays for the crowds.
1.5 MB Three matadors gang up on a dying bull in an attempt to make the animal look dangerous. The bull is too weak to move and offers no resistance to the torment.
