23. Q: Who Can Play Blind Cricket
To Cricket. Who can play blind cricket? How long does a blind cricket game usuallylast? Again this varies from state to state for domestic competition games.
http://www.stadiumturf.com/blind_cricket.htm
Who can play Blind Cricket? People who are totally blind or partially sighted (legally blind) can play the game.
How many players in a team?
For domestic competition this can vary from state to state. However, for national and international games, the team usually comprises eleven players which break down to four totally blind players and seven partially sighted players.
What equipment is used?
We use conventional cricket bat. The wickets are of conventional dimensions but are made of aluminium or otherwise metal materials. The pitch we play on is concrete and 22 yards in length. The boundaries are 30 to 40 yards. Our blind cricket ball is made of nylon tubing woven around a wire mould and contains lead pieces to give it weight and bottle tops for sound. It is slightly larger than the ball used in the sighted version of the game. Accessories such as cricket pads and gloves are optional and the same as those used by our sighted counterparts. How long does a Blind cricket game usually last? Again this varies from state to state for domestic competition games. Matches can be played over one or two days but their duration is typically of 90 to 100 or so overs.

Blind cricket world cup planning underway

At a meeting in October the World Blind Cricket Council agreed on the rules for the second international tournament planned for January 2002. Attending the meeting were council president, George Abraham from India, and other delegates representing Pakistan, England and Australia. The purpose of the meeting was to decide on tournament rules and umpire selection criteria. The delegation also emphasised their commitment to working with the organisers to ensure that the Christchurch event is a success. delegate George Abraham (centre).
"Events like the World Cup play a significant role in breaking down limited perceptions sighted people have in terms of the skills and potential of blind people," said the Foundation's Chief Executive, Jane Holden, who welcomed delegates to the meeting. "There are 70 players in New Zealand and we hope to double that figure as a result of holding the tournament in New Zealand," says one of the organisers, Dennis Wells.

NZ Blind Cricket Association Announcment
New Zealand will host the World Cup in January 2002. This was announced following a meeting of the World Blind Cricket Council in Sri Lanka in December 1999.
Results of National Blind Cricket Tournament
by Murray Peat From 3 to 7 January this year the New Zealand Blind Cricket Association held its national tournament of blind cricket at the Innes Common Ground in Hamilton. Competing in this tournament were three teams - Auckland, Waikato and a composite team called the Barbarians. After a round-robin competition and an elimination semi-final the Auckland and Barbarian teams met in the final. These two teams tied their round-robin game when they both scored 200 off their respective 40 overs. In the final the Barbarians batted first and scored 191 off their 40 overs with B3 player Brett Wilson scoring 64, B1 Andrew McDonald scoring 24 and B1 player John Puhara scoring 18. In reply the Auckland side batted well and thanks to B3 player John Sinisa who scored 90 runs off 60 balls along with 38 from B2 Gary Williamson and 28 from B1 Daniel Te'o, Auckland went on to win the game and retain the national trophy. During the prize giving dinner the New Zealand squad was announced that will travel to Brisbane, Australia in April this year for a tri-nations tournament with both Australia and England.

Early November is that curious time of the year when a student entirely loses touch with any sense of an external reality and is completely consumed by his or her academic concerns. This means that the only things I can think to fill my monthly editorial space with are of absolutely no interest to anyone in the outside world. If there is anyone out there wanting to know about my thoughts on the likely fate of the neo-liberal reform agenda in the public service, the effect of democratisation in Taiwan on the claims for ownership of the island advanced by the Chinese Communist Party, or the moral conservative and anti-youth prejudices that underlie the Howard Government's "work for the dole" scheme, then you are more than welcome to telephone me for a very long chat. How I long for December. Sleeping in, staying out late, Christmas parties, heading to the beach...

    GENERAL INFORMATION
Blind cricket is similar to traditional cricket with minor modifications.. The ball must be bowled underarm with at least 2 bounces on the pitch either side of the halfway line. Over the last 30 years the ball used for blind cricket has changes significantly from a woven cane ball dunked in water, to a nylon ball and now to a hardened plastic ball. All balls make a rattling sound enabling people with little or no vision to play the sport. The South Australian Blind Cricket Club was formed in 1970 and has fielded teams in the National Championships ever since. In 1998, four South Australians were selected for the National Training Squad with two being selected to represent Australia in the inaugural Blind Cricket World Cup held in India. SA had two in the current National Training Squad with one being selected for the 2nd World Cup in 2002.

So how is it played? The main difference between standard cricket and blind cricket is the ball. A size three football is used in blind cricket to help the partially sighted to see it and it is filled with a quantity of ball bearings to allow the totally blind to hear it.
The wicket is larger, making it easier for the partially sighted to see and easier for a Batsman or Bowler to touch for the purpose of orientation. Want to know more?
