There is nothing like exploring seemingly endless terrain filled with untracked powder, no lift lines, no crowds, peace and quiet, adventure and challenge, and did I mention the abundance of untracked powder. Venturing into the backcountry can be a transformational experience and thousands of people are figuring that out. Backcountry snow travel has become exponentially popular over the last few years especially as more ski areas open their boundaries to allow access to terrain that goes on as far as the skier is willing to travel.

Heel Free or Die - Backcountry Skiing in the Whites
This page is for telemark, cross-country and backcountry skiing in the Whites and the rest of New England. It also has links to telemark and backcountry sites around the world.
Places to ski in the Whites
Backcountry in the Whites is limited by a lack of open slopes and snow conditions that aren't always friendly. There isn't that much steep or extreme terrain available, but there are many places to go that are great fun. My personal favorite are the trails on Moosilauke . Since 1990, the Dartmouth Outing Club has rebuilt most of the trails on the mountain with skiing in mind. The Gorge Brook trail was the first, and it offers the most challanging route. The descent is tight and steep in places, and requires a good snow base. The Carraige Road is much wider and more mellow, especially after it was rebuilt in 1995. Because of the extensive erosion, an excavator and bulldozer were brought up to reclaim the trail. As a result, some sections are wide, allowing for linked turns . You can ski up the Carraige Road all the way from the base or link into it from the new Snapper trail, rebuilt in 1995 as well. The last major ski trail on the mountain is the Al Merrill Ski Loop, which runs up the Blue Ridge to the south and east of the main peak. The 5 mile loop starts at the Ravine Lodge, and offers the easiest backcountry skiing on the mountain. In the winter, the Ravine Lodge Road is gated so there is an additional 1.5 mile ski each way.

Backcountry skiing = untracked powder snow Backcountry skiing, ski touring, ski/snowboard mountaineering, hut trips....all of these words suggest skiing/snowboarding the untracked powder snow. There is nothing like it! It is an extension to ski resort area skiing that awakens the soul bringing you into the present as never before. Backcountry around Aspen is either accessed by uphill skiing or a ski area lift 'off-piste'. It can encompass a scenic modest ski tour in the winter wilderness or a fairly rigorous ski ascent/descent. We suggest one of the following itineraries:

There are several state parks in the Whites, the main ones being Franconia Notch State Park, Crawford Notch State Park, and Mt Washington State Park. High Country Ski Tours
When the snow pack allows it, the San Juan Mountains offer superb multi-day ski tours. Usually in the late winter or spring season, these tours can be a great way journey through the hills while still blanketed in snow. From three to seven days there are many different tours and routes to follow. You can make the experience as "wild" or a "chic" as you chose. Some involve snow-camping, which can be a truly rewarding experience in and of itself. Other tours will take advantage of lodging opportunities found in high mountain huts and near by towns. Or try a "European" style tour involving skiing village to village, thereby enjoying the comforts of proper lodging and dining out. The choice is yours. The skiing and scenery is always first rate.

40. Backcountry Skiing: General Info And Disclaimer
backcountry skiing General Info and Disclaimer. Yvon Canard friend at home intheir MiniMid. Preparing for backcountry skiing takes years of commitment.
http://www.bobskiing.com/skiinfo.htm
Most of the tours listed at this site are best classified as "ski mountaineering", and require a high degree of ski experience as well as general backcountry experience. A few of the trips require advanced mountaineering experience. Most of these tours also include some degree of avalanche hazard. Backcountry ski mountaineering is physically demanding, requires specialized skills, and it's pretty gear-intensive too. Preparing you for backcountry ski trips is far beyond the scope of this web site. However, the following list is a good start. This may seem like a lot of tough prerequesites. Preparing for backcountry skiing takes years of commitment. But it's worth it. To me, there is no richer experience than to be on skis in the High Sierra backcountry. Watch for Snow Slippers!
  • Develop very strong backcountry skills . Do plenty of summer backpacking, perhaps including some travel far away from trails. Master topo map reading and compass skills, and never venture into the backcountry without topo map(s) and a compass.
  • You should have very solid ski technique . You should have an efficient diagonal stride. Be able to make strong telemark and parallel turns. Practice at downhill resorts, and practice in difficult snow conditions. A steep remote slope (with a 40-pound pack) isn't the best place to learn ski technique.
