ABOUT COLORADO FIRSTRAX
Colorado Firstrax is dedicated to the subject of backcountry skiing. Backcountry skiing as an alternative to ski areas and resorts. Lifts, moguls, and groomed snow are fine but it's nice to experience how the mountains look and feel on your boards without having been contrived and denatured by marketing. We believe (we know) there is nothing like skinning up for hours, cresting a summit with a fine view, and then flying down for one hell of a run. Aside from many articles about the sport in general we describe many places where one can go in Colorado. In one sense we provide an online guidebook to Colorado's backcountry. There are some places we keep secret. We won't publicize everything. But places that have a broken trail to the top all winter long we consider not to be a secret. We'll leave it to you to discover the places off of that trail.

Left: Winter skiing on wind-swept snow, near Cameron Pass. Right: Backcountry skiing in The San Juan Mountains, south-western Colorado. I Left: Gibon landing from outer space, Montgomery Pass. As to where to go from Fort Collins... Cameron Pass is about an hour away and there are quite a few things to do there: trees, steeper couloirs... There seems to be a lot of interesting stuff in Indian Peaks, but there are several hours of totally flat ground to get there, so it's a pain. We went once with the skis for a closer look at Longs Peak: it's so windy up there that we carried the skis up and down, walking on bare rocks. Too bad, Longs look like a perfect steep-skiing mountain. It sometimes gets skied, but I guess you need to be lucky. A bunch of friends came from France in early April, dejected by the lack of snow in the Alps in 2001. So we took them on a tour of the few places we knew round here and then they went on their own in the Vail / Breckenridge area.

Backcountry powder in the Purcell Mountains
For twenty five seasons Ptarmigan Tours has offered hut-to-hut ski tours in the Purcell Mountains of southeastern British Columbia. All tours include transportation to and from the trailhead, helicopter access, meals, accommodation, instruction and guiding. Accommodations are in a wood-heated log lodge and cabins, where hearty meals are served family-style around the large dining table. A small hydro charging system supplies the lodge with light. Close by is the shower house and Canada's highest backcountry hot tub to soothe tired muscles and enjoy the winter evening.

Ski weeks
The Purcell Mountains are ideally situated from a skiers perspective. We get much more snow than the Rockies does, and we get many more clear weather days than the Coast Mountains. Deep, dry, fresh powder - we've got the best of both worlds! The extremely varied terrain of Boulder provides exciting areas for skiers of all ability levels to practice their telemarking, randonee or boarding skills. There is oodles of gently rolling terrain for beginners to cruise on, a wide variety of treed and alpine runs for intermediate skiers, and steep chutes abound for the expert. Day tours from Boulder visit the lovely rolling alplands, lakes and larch glades of the upper basin; Boulder Pass with its views of the Southern Rockies and Central Purcells; Ptarmigan Mountain with its many continuous downhill runs; the Lake District with its spectacular cirque runs from Mt. Higgins and Crosscut Mountain; the extensive tree skiing of the City Park area; The Roll with its open, steep chutes and glades, the endless run down Telemark Hill with its consistent intermediate pitch; the steeps of Cardiac Arrest and Coronary Bypass for the not-so-faint-of-hearted; and Johns Run, a wide, open run down to the lodge. For those wanting to get off the snow and onto the rocks, there are many opportunities for peak bagging and ridge traverses.

Our skiing
Back when we were into bushwhacking around in the Hudson Valley on skis, there cannot have been many people who explored more of the backcountry skiing potential south of Albany than we did. Nowadays we do most of our backcountry skiing in other regions of the world. And when there's decent snow in Hudson Valley, we usually prefer the more reliable pleasures of the the fine cross-country skiing available on the groomed trails. But when the snow is really deep and good, and our mood is right, we still head for one of our special runs in the backcountry. This page's title does not mention snowboarding although Ken has a backcountry snowboard (split-board) and has used it in several interesting regions of the western U.S. and Canada. But neither of us has made a snowboard run yet in the Hudson Valley backcountry. (Though once we met a couple snowboarding high on the northwest side of Hunter Mountain.)

Downhill Slopes in the Backcountry
For backcountry downhill skiing in the Hudson Valley, our experience was that we had to get rather lucky with snow conditions. First to have enough snow to cover the rocks, logs, stumps, thorns, etc. Second to find a day off from work to get to the snow before a warm sunny day hits it and it gets crusted over.

Tell me when this page is updated That's me, Gordon Schryer, looking back in awe at the Sharkfin and it's Eastern Crevasses and Ice-fall on the Garibaldi Neve Traverse. We travelled through that pile in total white-out... I'm still dumb-founded today! I'm 33 and have been hiking, climbing and ski mountaineering for over half my life. I am quite committed to it now. I completed the Seattle Mountaineer's Basic Climbing course in 1998. I began the Intermediate Climbing course as well as the Ski-Mountaineering course in 1999. I graduated the intermediate course in Summer of 2000 and became a climb leader with the club in December 2000. In the past I have stuck to a single or small group of climbing partners. This inevitably limits one's climbing opportunities. Life is too short to wait for everyone to be ready to go: join a club and climb anytime you like... WHY I am doing this page... Who Cares?
  • 1) It provides me with a personal reminder and storage place for my climbing experiences, (In fact, I am probably my page's most regular visitor), and 2) Hopefully, I can provide interesting and useful information in some of the trip reports for others who might be interested in doing the same climbs.

Gliding through a foot of fresh snow deep within the winter wilderness is an experience not easily forgotten, but to safely enjoy the backcountry in winter you must possess a variety of skills necessary in an environment where the margin for error shrinks with each stride away from civilization.
From your first strides into the backcountry to ski descents of the High Peaks, our progression of courses, the Ski Mastery Method , will help you develop your skills and increase your knowledge of nordic skiing. All of our courses are taught in the backcountry, on the wide variety of snow conditions provided by nature. You should realize that backcountry skiing is very different from skiing on a carefully prepared surface at nordic or alpine ski centers. The difficulty of the skiing can vary tremendously with different snow conditions, therefore we suggest you rate your ability conservatively. If you're unsure of your ability, contact us and we will determine your skiing level according to our definition. To meet your particular scheduling requirements, any of these courses, and all advanced skiing instruction, can be arranged through Private Instruction
Students provide their own nordic ski equipment for all ski courses. Lug-soled, rugged boots, metal-edged skis and climbing skins are an asset in the backcountry. For our Backcountry Basics course any touring or light touring equipment will be adequate; however those wishing to acquire more advanced skills will need sturdier equipment. Please

Backcountry Skiing
Is the escalating price of ski resort tickets getting you down? Tired of lengthy lift lines? Want untracked snow and pristine vistas? Then backcountry skiing may be for you! I went for the first time in May 1999 on Mount Hood near Portland, Oregon this page is about what I learned that day. You will work for it! My last experience with off-piste skiing was in Chamonix FR , where a gondola took us up to the summit. Backcountry skiers normally don't have it so easy! A typical day of backcountry skiing is 5/6 ascent and 1/6 descent, with usually only one run. No experience? Then get some! In Chamonix, our group hired a professional guide to lead us safely down the mountain. For my Mt. Hood trip, I had my Oregon Health and Science University Medical Informatics classmate Jim , who has completed an avalanche safety and winter survival course and has gone backcountry skiing many times. He had done this route earlier this year with a more experienced skier. Getting there You can go backcountry skiing year-round, provided you have a vehicle that can drive on rough roads up the mountain as close to the snowline as possible. This usually means a 4 x 4 truck. Many people drive up to the base of the trail the night before and camp or sleep in their trucks. Living in Portland OR, less than two hours away from Mount Hood, we had the luxury of sleeping in our own beds, but had to get up to leave at 3 a.m..
