    Major Requirements A major in Family and Consumer Sciences consists of a minimum of 30-45 units depending upon the area of specialization. Family and Consumer Sciences 110 is required and Communication 200 is recommended for all students majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences. A student may elect a specialization in:
    • Family and Consumer Sciences Education: required are a minimum of 45 units in Family and Consumer Sciences including Family and Consumer Sciences 102, 110, 201, 321, 340, 400, 430, 450, 471, 481, and one additional course numbered 300 or above in each of the five areas of Family and Consumer Sciences:
    • textiles/clothing
    • nutrition/foods
    • child development/family life
    • interior design/housing
    • consumer studies/management Professional education requirements for certification at the secondary level are: Education Health and Physical Education 200, and Psychology
    • General Family and Consumer Sciences: required are a minimum of 30 units in Family and Consumer Sciences including Family and Consumer Sciences 110 and at least one course in each of the five areas of Family and Consumer Sciences:
    • textiles/clothing
    • nutrition/foods
    • child development/family life
    • interior design/housing
    • consumer studies/management Remaining required units are to be selected in consultation with the student's advisor based on career objective (e.g., NK-4 certification, day care, gerontology).

Family and Consumer Science Education Department’s basic aim is to research and educate on the subject areas and provide students basic principles on related family science division thus to supply necessities rightly, to grow conscious consumer for guiding production, to cause to rise family life qualities, to prepare people for growing and changing industrial social conditions, use to science and technology to provide necessity in the best position to introduce professions related family science in the industry thus to select right occupations for students. The department has 160 students and academic staff include 1 professor, 1 associate professor, 2 assistant professors, 2 lecturers and 4 research assistants.

    The Family and Consumer Science department is dedicated to helping the student achieve satisfaction as an individual, family and community member. Students become involved with experiences which develop skills in relationships, food selection, preparation and nutrition. The areas of child development, interior design, personal family finance and fashion are also offered. The main focus of all courses involves decision making to serve as a base for life choices. Family and Consumer Science courses provide for each student an education compatible with his/her abilities and interests. All areas of study are realistically designed for young men and women to acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes useful for living and working in a changing society.
    FOODS I (SEM)
    Grades 9-10-11-12 1/2 Credit Foods I is an elective for students who want to learn how to select and prepare yeast breads, fruits, vegetables, beef and poultry items. Basic nutrition concepts are applied within the study of each unit. Recipe reading and following directions with lab group members is stressed.
    FOODS II (SEM)
    Grades 10-11-12 1/2 Credit Foods II is a basic course which stresses both skill development and information. Specific units of study in nutrition and food preparation will enable the student to be prepared for the first year of independent living. Healthy eating patterns on a budget in a limited amount of preparation time are stressed. The focus is on management.

    Improving Family Economic Well-Being
    Extension programs have provided clientele with information and skills enabling them to: construct, select and care for housing and home furnishings; select and care for landscape and garden plants; ensure home safety; and improve the home environment.
    • Home gardening, horticulture, and landscape information was provided to homeowners through office visits and phone calls. Twenty-two (22) programs and special interest workshops taught skills in recycling, constructing, and caring for home furnishings items to the 286 adults who attended. 11 volunteers assisted in teaching programs. Three (3) county extension homemaker training provided information that assisted over 200 families increase awareness of issues related to the home and environment on local, state, and global levels. Eighty-five (85) 4-H'ers completed the Blue Sky Series that teaches youth about health and environment.
