PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Ethnic Studies is an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the cultures, languages, historical and contemporary issues relating to Asian Americans, African Americans, Chicanos, and Native Americans. The program directs students to critically examine the cultural contributions made by these groups to world civilization and to American society. Ethnic Studies challenges all students to analyze existing generalizations, theories and concepts about racial and ethnic groups in order to develop valid generalizations, concepts, and theories about the people and their experiences. Students are encouraged to actively work to eliminate problems based on discrimination.
FEATURES
A student who majors in Ethnic Studies will not only have a strong background in one of the four areas of concentration but will also gain broad background knowledge of other ethnic groups. Each program area develops its major concentration in coordination with other program areas.

MAJORS
Ethnic Studies is the systematic and comparative study of racial/ethnic groups, racism, and the impact of law and social inequality on contemporary society. The curriculum focuses on the experiences of racial/ethnic groups that historically have been economically, educationally, politically, legally, and socially disadvantaged, and attempts to determine why these groups have not been fully integrated into the fabric of American society. The Department of Ethnic Studies offers majors leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree in Ethnic Studies, African American Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicano Studies, and Native American Studies. Students may develop a general emphasis in Ethnic Studies or a concentration on a specific group. The majors prepare students to pursue careers that require knowledge and expertise relative to the history, culture, and socioeconomic status of racial/ethnic groups in contemporary society.

The Africans in America Web site is a companion to Africans in America, a six-hour public television series. The Web site chronicles the history of racial slavery in the United Statesfrom the start of the Atlantic slave trade in the 16th century to the end of the American Civil War in 1865 and explores the central paradox that is at the heart of the American story: a democracy that declared all men equal but enslaved and oppressed one people to provide independence and prosperity to another. Africans in America examines the economic and intellectual foundations of slavery in America and the global economy that prospered from it. And it reveals how the presence of African people and their struggle for freedom transformed America Amistad Research Center
