Center for Technology and Disability Studies Kurt Johnson, PhD
The UW Center for Technology and Disability Studies (CTDS) is a component of the Washington Assistive Technology Alliance (WATA), funded in 1993 by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research. Located at CHDD, the center provides information and referrals, manages a resource library, develops curriculum materials, publishes information on assistive technology, conducts policy and funding analysis, and provides technical and other support for regional centers for assistive technology. An assistive technology device is any item or piece of equipment used to maintain or improve the functional capabilities of a person with a disability. Many high-tech and low-tech devices are now available to assist people with disabilities with daily living tasks, communication, education, work and recreation. Examples are wheelchairs, computers, assistive listening devices, magnification systems, and augmentative communication devices. CTDS is a partner in the National Center on Accessible Information Technology in Education (Access-IT) , whose mission is to help educational institutions make electronic and information technology accessible to all students and employees. Accessible technology enables individuals with disabilities to benefit from all technology-based educational and school-related activities. AccessIT also develops and disseminates materials, training and technical assistance to help educational entities procure and use accessible electronic and information technology

All individuals, regardless of their abilities or disabilities, have the right to an opportunity to learn to read and write in order to increase and enhance their educational opportunities, vocational success, communicative competence, self-empowerment capabilities, and independence. Article from the USSAC newsletter Goals Four principal goals guide the efforts of the Center:
  • Improving literacy instruction of children, youth, and adults with disabilities by developing research-based strategies, tools, curricula, and model programs.
