The Journal of
European Area Studies
The Journal of European Area Studies (formerly Journal of Area Studies) seeks to provide a forum for interdisciplinary debate about the theory and practice of Area Studies as well as a location for interdisciplinary empirical studies of European societies, politics and cultures. The central 'area focus' of the journal is European in its broadest geographical definition. However, the examination of European 'areas' and themes are enhanced as a matter of editorial policy by non-European perspectives. The Journal intends to attract the interest of both cross-national and single-country specialists in European studies and to counteract the worst features of Eurocentrism with coverage of non-European views on European themes. This double emphasis is reflected in the organization of the matter published in the Journal. More precisely, the Journal pursues a thematic approach to individual issues by dedicating a section of each issue to the examination of a specific theme, although there is also ample scope for outstanding individual articles that are not related to the theme of each issue. In addition, each issue contains a section reserved for contributions in the debate on the theory and practice of Area Studies. In line with the Journal's commitment to the encouragement and promotion of debate, the editorial board welcomes critical replies to articles that have appeared in earlier issues. The Journal has also a strong reviews section. Where individual issues cover particular themes, it always includes a large number of reviews on related books which have been published recently.

In a globally interdependent world, Russia and the other states formed after the breakup of the USSR offer immense possibilities for trade and cooperation. Yet the ignorance about Russia and the successor states is profound. Winston Churchill's famous statement that the Soviet Union is a "riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma" should serve as no excuse for this situation. All the new nations, particularly the Russian Federation, are open for study as during no other time in history, offering extraordinary opportunities for investigation.
It is in this spirit that Wittenberg offers the Russian Area Studies Program to its undergraduates. Through the study of Soviet and post-Soviet history, art, language, literature, geography, economics, sociology, and politics, Wittenberg students gain important knowledge about Russia and the other newly independent nations today. Some students may be stimulated enough to perform advanced graduate work at other institutions; others, to seek policy-making positions in the U.S. government or to engage in business activities in the area. But the fundamental purpose of the program is to produce intelligent citizens and participants in the society around them who have a thorough understanding of Russia and the other new nations, whatever their vocations may be.
The Russian Area Studies Program assumes that knowledge of Russia and the other successor states demands, first and foremost, an understanding of those internal cultural, political and historical forces that contribute to the life of the nations today. For without such knowledge, explaining current domestic or foreign behavior is a futile exercise in applying faulty assumptions about what the leaders and people in these nations "really" believe and why they believe it or in using frameworks that are rooted in the American, rather than, for instance, in the Russian experience.

Mission and Program
The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies is dedicated to increasing our knowledge of the world's major cultures and of the relations among them. To accomplish this goal, it sponsors two major programs. The mission of the Academy Scholars Program is to train social scientists in area studies-focusing especially on the non-Western areas of the world. The Academy's premise is that the scholarly world needs individuals who combine thorough disciplinary and area specialization, and the Academy Scholars Program was established to facilitate that goal. The mission of the Global Cultures Program is to promote study and understanding of the similarities, differences, and relations among the world's principal cultural groupings of people. To accomplish this end, the Academy undertakes research projects, organizes seminars and conferences, and sponsors publications dealing with these issues.

Introduction With the transnational flow of people, capital, and commodities becoming a widespread pattern rather than an anomaly, there is a rapidly rising demand for talented people equipped with extensive knowledge of other societies. Reflecting current trends the area studies program aims at providing students with interdisciplinary education and training on East Asia and the World covering various fields in the social sciences. Graduates of the Area Studies Program, with their global vision in its true sense of the term, have successfully pursued careers at multinational financial firms, multinational corporations, IT-related venture firms, mass media, overseas/domestic offices of Korean conglomerates, academia, and semi-governmental organizations such as the Korea Foundation. Students are expected to take courses on the history, society, culture, economics, and politics of a specific country to help accumulate focused knowledge of a particular region. At the same time, by taking courses offered in other programs at the GSIS, students are expected to acquire analytic skills necessary for understanding global phenomena and strengthening theiralready accumulated country-specific knowledge and experiences. To help enhance students' understanding of other countries, the Area Studies Program also provides a variety of opportunities affiliated with workplaces and research institutes in Japan, China, and the United States. Moreover, "field trips" specially designed to meet the needs of GSIS students are in preparation for the summer/winter vacations.

International Area Studies Focus:
International Area Studies is a language-based, interdisciplinary major committed to the preparation of students for careers in a global environment. It provides a solid liberal arts foundation, substantive requirements in international marketing, business and economics, and an area-specialty determined by the language or languages studied. It seeks to provide an undergraduate international experience for each of its students and to prepare them both for direct-entry careers and for graduate study. Courses: The area specialization provides a nexus of courses in national histories and literatures, politics, economic problems and social imperatives that support and inform the advanced-level language proficiency required by the major. Foreign languages in the curriculum include Chinese, Japanese and Russian as well French, German, Italian and Spanish. All courses are oral-intensive, with individual oral examinations each term. Most use a tutorial format 3-6 students with a native-speaking instructor. Many students take two languages and elect a language minor. The International Business Component provides a practical framework for the major. Requirements and electives include international marketing, international business, comparative economic systems, multinational corporations, and economic development.
