Scientists and Engineers Biographical File
About the Scientists and Engineers Biographical File What is the Scientists and Engineers Biographical File? The File contains information on scientists who were prominent in the early 1970s. It consists of folders containing photographs, biographical information and bibliographies of 1200 American and 100 foreign scientists and engineers. How was the collection formed? The collection was formed during the years 1972 - 75, when The Science and Technology Division solicited the materials as gifts from members of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineers. Other scientists included those listed in Who's Who in Science, Engineers of Distinction, winners of the National Medal for Science, and Scientists in Search of Their Consciences. The division asked Nobel Prize recipients in the sciences to submit portraits and a print of their award ceremony. Who should use the The Scientists and Engineers Biographical File? The archive is useful to researchers needing pictorial material for publications, and anyone who needs bibliographical (that is, materials created by or about the scientist) and biographical information on many well known and lesser known scientists and engineers of the mid-twentieth century.

Portraits of Izaak: With Pera Wirszup (right) in their Kenwood Avenue apartment; a wartime sketch (left), done by a fellow prisoner.
M aking a difference, Izaak Wirszup believes, is what he was meant to do. Attributing the fact that he survived one year and eight months in a series of six concentration camps to the kindness shown him by fellow prisoners, Wirszup explains, "When I remained alive, the sole survivor of a very large family, I had to confirm in my own conscience and before the memory of all my dear ones that I was doing something valuablesomething truly goodand doing it to the best of my abilities, with a life that had been spared me completely by chance." Growing up in what was then Wilno, Poland, Wirszup learned the value of hospitality and charity from his parents. The city was a hub of Jewish culture, and Wirszup's father, a prosperous candy manufacturer, was an avid patron of the arts, often inviting artists, writers, and others into the family home. "We were five at home, but we always had ten people at the dinner table," Wirszup recalls. "There were always guests, and the maids told us they didn't expect to have to serve so many people when they came to work for us." A gifted student, Wirszup pursued a career in mathematics and studied at the University of Wilno under Antoni Zygmund, an internationally famous math scholar who later joined the wave of Eastern European academics emigrating to the U.S. in the early days of World War II.

    Born 26 Dec 1900; 30 May 1992.
Polish-born mathematician who exerted a major influence on 20th-century mathematics, particularly in harmonic analysis. In 1940 Zygmund escaped with his wife and son from German controlled Poland to the USA. After a number of posts he was appointed to the University of Chicago in 1947 and remained there until he retired in 1980. His work in harmonic analysis is a field utilized in science and technology for the formulation of descriptions of periodic phenomena such as waves, vibrations, and regularly repeating structures. He also did major work in Fourier analysis and its application to partial differential equations. Zygmund's book Trigonometric Series (1935) is a classic, definitive work on the subject.

German chemist who discovered the element germanium (1886). He had a background in managing a cobalt glassworks and then on the faculty of the Freiberg School of Mining, when, in 1886, he discovered germanium in the mineral argyrodite. Analyzing the silver sulphide ore, he found that all the known elements it contained amounted to only 93 per cent of its weight. Tracking down the remaining 7 per cent, he found the new element he called germanium (for Germany). This turned out to be the eka-silicon predicted by Dmitry I. Mendeleyev in 1871.

Soviet cosmonaut, the first man to climb out of a spacecraft in space. On 18 Mar 1965, Voskhod 2 was launched into space carrying Leonov with Pavel Belyayev aboard. On the second orbit Leonov left the spacecraft through the air lock while still tethered to the vessel. He took motion pictures and practiced moving outside of the spacecraft for 10 minutes. Voskhod 2 made 17 orbits at about 110 miles (177 km) above earth. Ten years later, on 17 Jul 1975, Leonov commanded the Soviet Soyuz craft that linked in orbit with a U.S. Apollo craft.
