Zeno of Elea and his Paradoxes By Billy Carlile and Hedley Stothers Background Zeno born in Elea, Lucania (southwest Italy), at about 490-485 B.C. Was a presocratic anti-pluralist philosopher contribution was purely negative proved that pluralist assumptions lead to (supposedly) inescapable paradoxes pluralism = belief that reality consists of more than one ultimate things proved that motion is paradoxical Was disciple and (perhaps intimate) friend of Parmenides, who was pro-monism indirectly aided arguments of Parmenides by negating those of opponents monism = belief that reality is single, changeless and homogeneous Was ‘first dialectician’ dialectic = art or practice of arriving at the truth by the exchange of logical arguments Was one of first to employ reductionism reductionism = the analysis of complex things into simpler constituents distances, objects, etc. defined by smaller distances, objects, etc. recursion Logic followed the following type of path: If anything at all is divisible, then whatever is extended is divisible. Plurality axiomatic system for reality Divisibility axioms and rules of formal system Thing string in formal system Divisible thing theorem of axiomatic system Indivisible thing (atom) nontheorem of axiomatic system Four key paradoxes of Zeno

The great Greek philosopher Zeno of Elea (born sometime between 495 and 480 B.C.) proposed four paradoxes in an effort to challenge the accepted notions of space and time that he encountered in various philosophical circles. His paradoxes confounded mathematicians for centuries, and it wasn't until Cantor's development (in the 1860's and 1870's) of the theory of infinite sets that the paradoxes could be fully resolved. Zeno's paradoxes focus on the relation of the discrete to the continuous, an issue that is at the very heart of mathematics. Here we will present the first of his famous four paradoxes.
Zeno's first paradox attacks the notion held by many philosophers of his day that space was infinitely divisible, and that motion was therefore continuous. Paradox 1: The Motionless Runner A runner wants to run a certain distance - let us say 100 meters - in a finite time. But to reach the 100-meter mark, the runner must first reach the 50-meter mark, and to reach that, the runner must first run 25 meters. But to do that, he or she must first run 12.5 meters. Since space is infinitely divisible, we can repeat these 'requirements' forever. Thus the runner has to reach an infinite number of 'midpoints' in a finite time. This is impossible, so the runner can never reach his goal. In general, anyone who wants to move from one point to another must meet these requirements, and so motion is impossible, and what we perceive as motion is merely an illusion.

Pronunciation Key
Zeno of Elea c. 490 c. 430 B.C. , Greek philosopher of the Eleatic school . He undertook to support in his only known work, fragments of which are extant, the doctrine of Parmenides by demonstrating that motion and multiplicity are logically impossible. The substance of his argument against multiplicity was that a whole must be composed of ultimate indivisible units, or it must be divisible ad infinitum. If the whole is divisible ad infinitum, there is a contradiction involved in the assumption that an infinite number of parts can be added up to a finite total. The essence of his argument against motion was that a moving body can never come to the end of a line, as it must first cover half the line, then half the remainder, and so on ad infinitum. The thrust of these arguments was to demonstrate, through logical reasoning, the error of common-sense notions of time and space. According to Aristotle, Zeno was the first to employ the dialectical method. Contemporary philosophers and mathematicians have taken renewed interest in Zeno's problems. See A. Grunbaum

Zeno of Elea
(490 - 430 BC) Greece
Philosopher Disciple of the philosopher Parmenides and one of the Eleatic school, whose paradoxes raised "modern" problems of space and time, for example, Achiles can never overtake a tortoise in a race if the amount of space each contestant still has to cover can be infinitely divided; whenever he reaches where the tortoise was, the tortoise will have moved just ahead of him. Zeno was the lover of his master Parmenides, whose life was held peculiarly holy. In a text we read, Parmenides and Zeno went together to Athens at the great Panathenaean festival; the former was, at the time of his visit, about 65 years old, very white with age, but well-favored. Zeno was nearly 40 years of age, of a noble figure and fair aspect; and in the days of his youth he was reported to have been the beloved of Parmenides.

PreSocratics (7th - 5th century B.C.)
Period marking the begining of science, as well as the development of literature, arts, politics, and philosophy. During these years, the city-states (polis in Greek) flourish. These include the Sparta and Athens. Within this period the Ionian school of natural philosophy was founded by Thales of Miletus . This is considered the first school for speculating about nature in a scientific way, hence signifies the birth of science.
The Pythagorean brotherhood is formed by Pythagoras of Samos . This society performed a great deal of progress in mathematics, but also had mystical beliefs. In addition to the Ionian and Pythagorian, other schools of this period include the Eleatic , the Atomists, and the Sophists
All philosophers - scientists up to Democritus are considered to be PreSocratics.
Philosophers-Scientists
  • Thales of Miletus (624-560 B.C.). Astronomer, mathematician and philosopher. Learned astronomy from the Babylonians. Founder of the Ionian school of natural philosophy. Predicted the solar eclipse on May 28, 585. Proved general geometric propositions on angles and triangles. Considered water to be the basis of all matter. He believed that the Earth floated in water. Used the laws of prospectives to calculate the height of the pyramids.
