From December 4 to 5, Prof. Efim Zelmanov, who has awarded a Fields Medal in 1994, visited POSTECH for the 7th A-un Lecture. Prof. Zelmanov had three lectures in English for two days to POSTECH students and professors; Abstract Algebra in the 20th Century, Infinite Dimensional Algebras, and Profinite Groups.
Prof. Zelmanov was born in Russia in 1955, and he attended Novosibirsk State University, obtaining his Ph.D. degree in 1980. He has taught at Oxford University, the University of Chicago, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and presently he teaches at Yale University. In addition, he became a tenure professor at the Korea Institute of Advanced Study in 1996.
In 1987 Prof. Zelmanov solved one of the big open questions in the theory of Lie algebras. He proved that the Engel identity ad(y)n = implies that the algebra is necessarily nilpotent. This was a classical result for finite dimensional Lie algebras but he solved a big open problem when he proved that the result also held for infinite dimensional Lie algebras. In 1991, he went on to settle one of the most fundamental results in the theory of groups that had occupied group theorists throughout the 20th century. He solved the restricted Burnside problem. In 1994 Prof. Zelmanov was awarded a Fields Medal for these achievements at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich. In addition to the Fields Medal, Prof. Zelmanov has received other honors for his outstanding works. He received the College de France Medal in January 1992 and the Andre Aizenstadt Prize in May 1996.

Fields Medal
Historical Introduction
This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.

Four mathematiciansJean Bourgain, a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, N.J.; Pierre-Louis Lions of the University of Paris-Dauphine in France; Jean- Christophe Yoccoz, University of Paris-Sud, Orsay, France; and Efim I. Zelmanov, a professor at the University of Chicago currently on leave from the University of Wisconsin, Madisonhave been awarded the 1994 Fields Medals. The medals were presented during the International Congress of Mathematicians, held August 3 through 11 in Zurich, Switzerland. The Fields Medalsofficially known as the International Medals for Outstanding Discoveries in Mathematicsare presented every four years to two to four individuals under the age of 40 in recognition of both their existing work and the promise of future achievements. Unlike the Nobel and other big prizes, however, the Fields Medals carry no monetary award. Winners are decided upon by a committee within the International Mathematical Uniona professional mathematical society of worldwide membership, headquartered this year in Rio de Janiero, Brazilwhich arranges the International Congress. Thirty-four individuals have been honored since 1936.
