Zeeman, maar zonder monsterboekje CORRIE VERKERK Vijfenveertig jaar fotografeerde hij er, 'in stukkies en beetjes'. Voor Cor Jaring had de Amsterdamse haven geen geheimen. Hij kwam er al als 'broekie', raakte verslingerd aan de schoonheid en ruigheid en keerde er - in 1957 - terug om zijn eerste foto's te schieten. Foto's van schepen en ruimen, maar vooral ook van de mensen: arbeiders, met hun dikwijls verweerde koppen van het buitenwerk, trots op hun handwerk. ''Dat werk was hun leven, de haven was van hen, zo voelden ze dat. Saamhorigheid, dat was er,'' vertelt fotograaf Cor Jaring over zijn werk in de Amsterdamse haven. Nooit realiseerde hij zich dat hij een stukje verdwijnend Amsterdam voor de eeuwigheid vastlegde. ''De haven, zoals ik die kende, is weg. Er staan grote gebouwen, kantoren, yuppenhuizen.'' De laatste twee jaar was hij er niet meer geweest. Tot het Fonds voor de Kunst met die opdracht kwam: de nieuwe Westhaven fotograferen. Een klus waar hij even aan moest wennen. ''Daar moest Ruigoord voor worden opgeofferd. En in Ruigoord was ik zelf een van de eerste krakers.'' De nieuwe haven overviel hem als een futuristisch oord: onbegrijpelijke sciencefiction. De doorgewinterde arbeider vond hij er niet meer terug. ''Wel allemaal mannen met helmen en handtelefoons. Ach, het is eigenlijk ook maar goed dat ze niet meer zo hard hoeven te werken als vroeger. Daar hebben we toch voor gestreden.''

Chris Achilleos The art of illustration goes far back to our prehistoric heritage of the cave man days. "One picture is worth a thousand words" As a rule, anything that has to be produced in three dimensions has to first be conceived as a tow dimensional drawing. Men like Chris Achilleos have devoted their whole life to producing two dimensional concepts of the inner workings of the imagination. It is his job to paint a visual concept that will capture the essence of the many thousands of printed words inside. It is a profession that not only requires an intellectual and analytical approach, but a strict discipline in learning and perfecting techniques which are best able to transfer the visible idea, or concept, into a concrete image of artistic soundness. Nee, dat is niet zo.
Maar ja... bijgevoegd tref je enige knipsels . Het eerste is een onderhoud met Zeeman voor De Tien Geboden in Trouw, twee weken terug. Ik citeer: "Ik heb wel eens gedroomd dat ik met Arjan Peeters over de Kloveniersburgwal liep en Van Gogh tegenkwam. Ik droomde dat ik hem van zijn fiets trok en de gracht in flikkerde. Hij kwam boven en krijste. Arjan riep: 'Hij kan niet zwemmen!' Waarop ik antwoordde: 'Nee, dat had er nog bij moeten komen! Dan had het helemaal geen zin gehad.' Ik werd wakker en was een tevreden mens."
Misschien kan Maarten jou nog eens uitleggen dat uit het bovenstaande blijkt hoe onbelangrijk ik ben voor mijn geachte opponent, maar zelf lees ik zulke zinnen glimlachend en merk hoe belangrijk ik mag wezen in het schuldige onderbewuste van meneer. En verwijt mezelf dat ik nou nooit eens van hem droom; dat is wel heel ondankbaar.
't Stemt natuurlijk heel voldaan dat ik zo'n prominente rol mag spelen in meneers dromen. Ergens staat geschreven dat ik Michaël tot aan het eind van zijn dagen publicitair zal mogen begeleiden. En als straks bij de premiere van "Baby Blue" de dames van het Michaël Zeeman-fonds voor gevallen vrouwtjes hun opwachting weer maken met de collectebus, mitella's en blauw geslagen ogen zal ik met een brok in de keel aan jullie vriend denken. Jij en Maarten zijn natuurlijk heel van harte uitgenodigd, maar ware ik jelui, dan kwam ik maar niet; een beetje solidariteit met die arme meneer Zeeman zou jullie sieren!

Prepared by Ed Riding Create a forward or appendix, or non-normative, that differentiates Access Points from Index. The profile is concerned Access Points. Bill will create first draft of Bibliographic database model and Joe will review it. Bill reviewed differences between US National profile and Bath available in “Summary of Changes Reflected in March 2002 Profile Draft”.
Character encoding - MARC-8 vs. Unicode. Suggestion is to make MARC-8 a required character-set, and UTF-8 would be recommended. We resolved to create some statement: “It is anticipated that a future version of the Profile will require UTF-8.”
Profile Support or Conformance – We talked about the difference between system vendor conformance and support in the library database for the requested access point. We most likely need a new diagnostic to say the data is not available if the library data does not support the access points requested by the client. Open Questions from the Summary doc Unanchored phrase searches defined at level 2, having adjacent keyword as opposed to phrase. Phrase is ambiguous and we resolved that we don’t need a new structure attribute if we equate phrase to “adjacent ordered wordlist”. or “consecutive wordlist”. (Ralph didn’t seem to happy to hear this.) We resolved that phrase search is an unanchored adjacent ordered wordlist. Don’t say left-to-right, because of Hebrew and other right-to-left scripts.

Modern Optics Labs for Upper Level Undergraduates Since the MUPEP introductory curriculum and the sophomore contemporary physics sequence gives our students a stronger grounding in waves and quantum mechanics, more advanced topics can be studied at the senior level. We currently offer two semester-long, 4 credit hour courses: Optics and Laser Physics, and Spectroscopy of Atoms and Molecules. Student response to these courses has been excellent, resulting in their being two of our most heavily subscribed courses at the senior level. Written student evaluations of the courses are very favorable, with most noting that even more lab work would be beneficial and that the spectroscopy labs "made quantum mechanics real" for them. We have upgraded our optics course to a two semester sequence: Laser Physics and Modern Optics ; and Spectroscopy of Atoms and Molecules . The optics and atomic physics of lasers is discussed in Laser Physics. Lab exercises involve coherence properties, Gaussian optics, cavity stability, holography, and Fabry-Perot's. Spectroscopy of Atoms and Molecules is mainly a laboratory course. Students first use a prism spectrometer, to view atomic, molecular, and blackbody sources. More advanced techniques are used to obtain progressively higher resolution to observe Zeeman splittings, fine structure, and isotope shifts for example. Recent experiments include saturation spectroscopy, opto-galvanic studies. Also available are an optical tweeezers and (soon) a magneto-optical trap.
