Doctorate in mathematics University of California, Berkeley.
Born April 4, 1919 in Swatow, People's Republic of China. The 1997 National Medal of Science Winner Yau has made profound contributions to mathematics with his unparalleled ability for combining the theories of nonlinear partial differential equations and differential geometry. His work has had a great impact on areas of mathematics and physics as diverse as topology, algebraic geometry, representation theory and general relativity as well as differential geometry and partial differential equations. Yau's work is distinguished by its enormous breadth, power and insight. Repeatedly tackling fundamental problems without regard to their difficulty, impact on science through his own research has definitely placed Yau in a league of his own. Yau, working collaboratively with Richard M. Schoen, solved a long-standing open problem in relativity theory, by showing the positivity of mass for space-time. As a consequence, Schoen and Yau were able to give the first rigorous demonstration of how black holes can be formed because of the condensation of matter. A black hole possesses a gravitational field so intense that no matter or radiation can escape from it.

Yau was appointed assistant professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1972. In 1974 he was appointed an associate professor at Stanford University. He was promoted to full professor at Stanford before returning to the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton in 1979. In 1980 he was made a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, a position he held until 1984 when he moved to a chair at the University of California at San Diego. Yau was awarded a Fields Medal in 1982 for his contributions to partial differential equations , to the Calabi conjecture in algebraic geometry , to the positive mass conjecture of general relativity theory, and to real and complex Monge equations. In fact the 1982 Fields Medals were announced at a meeting of the General Assembly of the International Mathematical Union in Warsaw in early August 1982. World-renowned mathematician and winner of the Fields Medal, Professor Yau Shing-tung, gave a lecture at the Sha Tin Government Secondary School on 27th December 2000 hosted by the HKeducationCITY.net. The lecture "Mathematics of the Internet" illustrated the importance of mathematical research and the application of Mathematics in the Internet. It covered the development of the Internet and Modern Mathematics, including Data Compression, network traffic management, Cryptography and Watermarking. According to Professor Yau, it is no doubt that Hong Kong has the potential to become a leading scientific and high-tech city with its solid financial background and flexible citizens. Yet he pointed out that there were insufficient fund and resources for scientific research in Hong Kong, and he warned the government of the present situation, which, if not being taken care of, "would bring Hong Kong to an end in 10 to 20 years." Professor Yau also pointed out that local students tend to be inferior in terms of creativity to their contemporaries in the United States. He encouraged local students to expand their horizons by extensive reading.

This colloquium, jointly sponsored by MSRI in connection with their conference in honor of S. S. Chern, ``The Panorama of Mathematics'', will be held in Sibley Auditorium in the Bechtel Engineering Center. I shall talk on ideas in geometry that come from general relativity. In particular, I shall talk on metrics with positive scalar curvature and related geometry and on the influence of string theory on geometry, through Seiberg Witten equations and mirror symmetry.
