Chalcedon
A titular see of Asia Minor. The city was founded 676 B. C. by the Megarians on the Bithynian coast, opposite the place where a little later Byzantium rose. It was captured by the Persian general Otanes after the expedition of Darius against the Scythians. Allied alternately with Athens and Sparta, it became eventually a part of Bithynia, and in 74 B. C. Chalcedon is to-day Kadi-Keui (Kadikoi). It has about 30,000 inhabitants: 15,000 Greeks, 5000 Armenians (500 Catholics), 2000 Latins, 6000 Mussulmans , 2000 Jews, 200 Protestants . The Latin parish is conducted by the Assumptionists; they have also a seminary for Catholic Greeks, with a Greek chapel, and a high school for Oriental studies, which publishes a review, the "Echos d'Orient". The Christian Brothers have there a large college with commercial and elementary courses. The Dames de Sion have a school for girls; the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of Lourdes a convent; the Capuchins a scholasticate. There are also public chapels belonging to the Franciscans and the Catholic Armenians. The Armenian Sisters of the Immaculate Conception have a house at Chalcedon, and the Armenian Mechitarists a college. Two Greek churches, one Armenian, and one English Protestant church complete the list of Christian Christian Brothers , and the Oblate Sisters of the Assumption, also a synagogue, German Protestant and Jewish schools, and an English cemetery, with a monument to the soldiers who died in the Crimean War. At Famaraki (ancient Hiereia) the Assumptionists have a chapel, and the Oblate Sisters of the Assumption a school. Near Kadi-Keui and within the limits of the Greek diocese are places of interest. Scutari is the Turkish name of Chrysopolis, a city which the

Xenocrates (396 - 314 AC)

Philosophy, Biographies Xenocrates Related Category: Philosophy, Biographies Xenocrates [z n t z] Pronunciation Key B.C. , Greek philosopher, b. Chalcedon, successor of Speusippus as head of the Academy . He was a disciple of Plato, whom he accompanied to Sicily in 361 B.C. His ascetic life and noble character greatly influenced his pupils. He was the first to divide philosophy into dialectic (or logic), physics, and ethics, the latter two being his principal themes. He held that mathematical objects and the Platonic Ideas are both substances, and both identical, causing Aristotle to say of him that he "made ideal and mathematical number the same." His Platonic ethics taught that virtue produces happiness, although external goods can contribute. Only fragments of his work survive.

    PREFACE
Julius Africanus, under the emperor Marcus Aurelius Antonius, was the first among us to compose, using a simple style of history, a brief chronology organized according to generations and reigns. From there, Bishop Eusebius of Caesaria and the priest Jerome of holy memory edited a multipart history of the canons of chronicles organized according to reigns and times. After these came others, in particular, Bishop Victor of Tunnunna who, having reviewed the histories of the previous times, filled out the deeds of succeeding ages up to the consolate of Justin the Younger. We have recorded here, as briefly as we were able, a summary of the times from the beginning of the world up to the principates of the emperor Heraclius and of King Sisebut of the Goths, laying down, bit by bit, the descending order of times, so that, by means of the information provided, the whole of the past ages might be known.
    FIRST AGE OF THE WORLD
    1. God created everything in six days. On the first day he fashioned light; on the second, the firmament of heaven; on the third, the land and the sea; on the fourth, the stars; on the fifth, the fish and the birds; on the sixth, the animals and the beasts of burden and finally the first man, Adam, in his image.
    2. Adam, at age 230, bore Seth, who was born in the place of Abel. Seth means "resurrection" because in him was resuscitated the first seed, that is, the seed of the sons of God. Seth, at age 205, bore Enosh, who was the first to begin invoking the name of God. Enosh, at age 190, bore Kenan, whose name means "the nature of God." At the same time, Cain became the first, before the flood, to build a city, which he filled solely with the multitude of his own descendents.

    Xenocrates
One of Plato's pupils and successors, who was reputed to be a poor, but very well-spoken man. He spoke so well, it was said, that a drunk young man, Polemon, was so impressed by Xenocrates speaches that he immediately became sober for the rest of his life, started studying under the philosopher and eventually became his successor as headmaster of the Academy.
Xenocrates divided philosophy into logic, physics and ethics and is also credited with having made the first attempt to separate mind, body and soul. He stated that reality is a combination of perception, knowledge and opinion. Webmistress V.E.K. Sandels Home

They made him general again, and he won some important victories for Athens, amongst others he conquered the cities of chalcedon and Byzantium.
    http://www.in2greece.com/english/historymyth/history/ancient/alcibiades.htm
    Alcibiades
(c.450-404BC) One of ancient Greece's most adventurous and controversial personalities, Alcibiades was a disciple of Socrates, and is one of the characters in Plato's Symposium.
Extremely good-looking, very wealthy and always living according to local custom wherever he was: on horse in Thessaly, constantly drunk in Thrace or taking ice-cold baths in Sparta, he was subject to much gossip, admiration but also animosity.
As a general, he was sent to lead an expedition to Sicily where a Greek town needed help. On his way there, he was sent for by the Athenians, who wanted him to return immediately to face charges of vandalisation and sacrilege. On the night before his departure, almost all Hermes statues in Athens had been damaged and the Athenians suspected that Alcibiades and his party lay behind this after a drunken last night in town. Also, they had satirised the Eleusinian Mysteries, which was considered severe blasphemy.
When Alcibiades learnt of this, he fled to Sparta and offered the Spartans to help defeat Athens. The Athenians sentenced him to death in his absence, and all his property was confiscated by the state.
