ELIPHAS LEVI Il suo vero nome era Alphonse Louis Constant, nato a Parigi nel 1810, figlio di un povero ciabattino. La sua indole sognate e solitaria attirò l'attenzione del parroco della sua chiesa che, riconoscendone la precoce intelligenza, si offrì di farlo studiare gratuitamente in una scuola retta da ecclesiastici. Venne persuaso a seguire la via religiosa ed entrò in seminario dove seguì i gradi dell'ordinazione fino al diaconato, era ormai pronto a prendere i voti quando la sua vita venne sconvolta da una giovane studentessa, Adéle Allenbach, una delle ragazze che aveva in affidamento per la loro prima comunione. I sentimenti provati (come Levi stesso scrisse) non avevano nulla di carnale, con la scoperta della femminilità scoprì anche l'amore umano e decise di spogliarsi degli abiti talari. Lasciato il seminario svolse vari lavori, quasi tutti precari, iniziando anche una fervente attività politica nell'ambito del pensiero socialista; per ben tre volte finì in prigione a causa dei suoi scritti. Nel 1846 sposò Noémi Cadiot, che successivamente divenne scultrice e pittrice con lo pseudonimo di Claude Vignon; venne abbandonato dalla moglie nel 1853 ed il suo matrimonio dichiarato nullo nel 1865. Dopo questa separazione Levi si immerse negli studi esoterici entrando in contatto con una frangia socialista della Massoneria Francese ed accettando la guida del grande occultista polacco Hoene Wronski, conosciuto nel 1852. Wronski lo avviò allo studio della Cabala e della Numerologia, allo stesso tempo Levi ebraizzò il proprio nome trasformandolo in Eliphas Levi Zahed e firmando i suoi scritti come Eliphas Levi.

During those same years, the Curies had two children. Irene, born in 1897, became an important scientist in her own right, winning the Nobel Prize in 1935 with her husband Frederic Joliot. Eve Curie, born seven years later, has lived a long and productive life, first as a concert pianist and then as writer. The marriage ended tragically in 1906, when Pierre was killed at age 47 in a street accident in Paris. It took Marie a very long time to recover from this loss. After her husband's death, she was appointed to fill his vacant chair at the Sorbonne as the first woman in history to teach there. Two years later, the first woman in France to do so, she received professorial rank. It was also a turning point in her career she focused all her energy on completing alone the scientific work on radioactive materials that she and Pierre had undertaken. [HOME] The Politics of the Marvellous The Invention of the Knights Templar Myth P7 The Templar myth was in part a literary invention in the Gothic taste, in part an offshoot of theosophical religious experience. It had been born in the same eighteenth- century milieu which had produced the Gothic tale, and contained most of the magical and sexual thrills which the Gothic story-tellers cherished. Like all the Gothic tales, the Templar myth was rooted in romance. And romance, in its turn, was rooted in the medieval tales of knighthood. The historical novels written specifically about the Templars were indifferent ones, but more important than any such works was the vague conviction which began to grow on the common reader of the early nineteenth century that the Templars were a sinister, teasingly interesting topic which was bound up in some way with the origins of medieval knighthood. The knight with knowledge of mysteries had been one of the staples of romance from its medieval beginnings. But in the earlier, Masonic stages of the Templar myth there had been no connecting link by which people interested in medieval romance could connect the esoteric speculations of the Masonic lodges with the common patrimony of romantic literature. This link was supplied by Jospeh Hammer. At the sources of all romantic literature lay the Arthurian legend and the Grail myth. Der Dichter heiratet eine einfache Bäuerin (so fängt dieses Drama an). Alle möglichen Menschen sind eingeladen. Jeder kommt mit einem anderen Gefühl, oft mit kritischen Gedanken und mit Spott, bis sich aus den Gesprächen und dramatischen Verwicklungen etwas Drohendes kristallisiert: eine Gewissensstimme gegen den Schlamm der Alltäglichkeit und der Kleinlichkeit. Auch geistige Gestalten aus der Geschichte Polens kommen mit der vorwurfsvollen Frage: “Was tut ihr da? Warum so willenlos? Aber es ist doch selten; meistens haben die Nationalfahnen drei Farben wie zum Beispiel die Fahnen Deutschlands, Frankreichs oder Italiens. Dieser „symbolische Farbendualismus“ scheint eine bestimmte Bedeutung zu haben. In der Sphäre der Volks- und Nationalsymbole entdecken wir, wie in einem Spiegel, ein lebendiges Problem eines Volkes. Im Fall Polens und der Dualität der Farben zeigt sich symbolisch die tiefe Zerrissenheit, welche die polnische Volksseele, das polnische Volk und die polnische Kultur kennzeichnet. Die „Eindringlingstheorie“ der Genesis des polnischen Volkes, nach der das polnische Volk zwischen dem sechsten und zehnten Jahrhundert als Resultat der Invasion der Wikinger gegen die slawischen Stämme zwischen Oder und Weichsel entstand, erfreute sich einer gewissen Popularität bei polnischen Historikern und in breiteren Kreisen der polnischen Intelligenz noch in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts, wurde aber abgelehnt von der neueren Geschichtswissenschaft. Gemäß jener „Eindringlingstheorie“ sollte der polnische Adel von den Invasoren - den Wikingern - abstammen, das polnische Bauerntum hingegen von den urtümlich slawischen Stämmen. Wenn auch die „Eindringlingstheorie“ falsch ist, so bleibt die Tatsache des scharfen Gegensatzes zwischen der polnischen Oligarchie, dem Adel oder - später - der Intelligenz und dem polnischen Volk, hauptsächlich dem Bauernstand, doch etwas Unbestreitbares. Dieser Gegensatz schien in vorigen Jahrhunderten so groß zu sein, dass einer der westlichen Reisenden in Polen während des 18.
