The Sir Christopher Wren Building at the College of William and Mary in Virginia is the oldest academic building in continuous use in the United States. It was constructed between 1695 and 1699, before Williamsburg was founded, when the capital of the colony of Virginia was still located at Jamestown.
Tradition has it that the building was designed by the famed English architect Sir Christopher Wren who designed St. Paul's Cathedral in London.
The Wren Building has been destroyed by fire three times in 1705, 1859 and 1862. Each time the structure was rebuilt, and for more than three centuries, it has been "the soul of the College." In the building, generations of William and Mary students have attended classes and lectures, enjoyed meals and attended chapel services. Classes are still held in the Wren Building, which also is home to several faculty offices.
To prepare the Wren Building for its fourth century of use, the College has recently completed a comprehensive renewal and replacement project. The major components of the project were restoration of the architectural features such as floors and paneling; replacement of mechanical systems; safety upgrades; and repair and stabilization of the walls and foundation.

Wren, Sir Christopher 1632-1723, English architect. He was professor of astronomy at Gresham College, London, from 1657 to 1661, when he became Savilian professor of astronomy at Oxford. Though now known as the greatest architect of the English baroque style, Wren was a celebrated mathematician in his time. In 1665 he spent six months in Paris studying architecture. After the great fire of 1666 he prepared a masterly plan for the reconstruction of London, never executed. He designed, however, many new buildings, the greatest being Saint Paul's Cathedral

    Wren Bibliography
As Surveyor of the King's Works, architect of St Paul's cathedral and President of the Royal Society, Wren left behind a bewildering quantity of drawings, letters, and documents concerning his professional activities, but he never kept a diary. Details of his childhood and personal life thus have to be patched together from other sources.
Understandably England's most famous architect has attracted his fair share of attention from architectural historians. As the list below shows, the quantity of writing on him is substantial and continues to be added to at an impressive rate. At the time that this bibliography was being first compiled in December 2000 at least three new biographies of Wren were in preparation, progress was being made on publishing revised catalogues of his drawings at the Soane Museum and All Soul's College, Oxford and a massive volume was being written on the history of St Paul's Cathedral. The following list is thus a work in progress. There are undoubtedly many omissions but I shall do my best to keep it relatively up to date. All suggestions will be gratefully received. Useful contributions will be acknowledged in the Acknowledgements and Sources section.

    Wren, Sir Christopher

    Sir Christopher Wren - scientist.
(By Hugh Pearman. Review of “On a Grander Scale: the outstanding career of Sir Christopher Wren” by Lisa Jardine, 600 pp, pub. HarperCollins, £25. Review published in The Sunday Times, 1st September 2002, under the title “A restless genius never happy with his work”). Well, you had to find some way to pass the time when you were an impoverished intellectual of staunchly Royalist stock during the closing years of the Commonwealth. Wren designed gadgets, including a duplicating machine, a seed drill, and a transparent beehive. He observed the stars, was a noted mathematician, and practised anatomy. None of this was architecture. Even by the multi-tasking standards of the day, Wren was unusual. Lisa Jardine’s lengthy and immensely detailed account of Wren’s life and times chronicles how a circle of Royalist thinkers, deprived of public office and wealth under Cromwell and with time on their hands, was instrumental in progressing British science at this period. Wren, as a brilliant pupil and academic at Oxford, joined this circle at exactly the right time. In 1660 the monarchy was restored with the accession of Charles II, and the old Royalist supporters swept back into power, carrying Wren with them. As his late father, Dean Christopher Wren, and uncle Matthew were both leading churchmen loyal to the executed Charles I, the young Wren came with impeccable family credentials. He quickly became official architect to the throne. Staying on top of his game through five monarchs into the Hanoverian era was not the least of Wren’s achievements.

    Sir Christopher Wren - scientist.
We know he was a thoroughly charming man who loved intelligent women - he adored his talented, medically-gifted elder sister Susan and his daughter Jane, who seems to have inherited his inquiring mind. Both died young, as did both his wives, Faith and Jane. At the end of his life, with his great friend Hooke dead also, Wren was left with only his loyal but uninspired son and assistant, also named Christopher. As an old man Wren found himself embroiled in controversy over alleged corruption on the St. Paul’s contract, from which he had personally gained nothing. At one point his meagre salary was halved. But he had lived long enough not to die in disgrace. His funeral was magnificent, his burial was in his own cathedral under that unsurpassed inscription: “If you seek his monument, look around you”. Which would have amused Wren the scientist, who had always advised against burial in churches on the grounds of public hygiene. Like its subtitle, this book is on a grander scale than other recent Wren biographies, and is probably as definitive as current studies allow. Those wanting a fast and friendly guide to Wren should look elsewhere, since Jardine’s offering is a big, academically slanted tome. It is amazing value for the sheer amount of historical research. It sheds much light on Wren’s extraordinary times, but somehow fails to capture the whole man. You just catch a glimpse of his coat-tails, disappearing into the coffee-house around the next corner.

The UK based Restaurant, Hotel and Wine Review
Sir Christopher Wren's House Hotel in Windsor
Windsor is a tourist town dominated by the famous castle which is allegedly HM The Queen's favourite residence. That's when she's not at Buck House, Sandringham or Balmoral. The town is not really known as a mecca for gourmets or foodies and there are probably only about four or five restaurants that could be considered worthy of more than a passing interest. One hopes the Royal kitchens are in another league, but few of us are likely to receive the summons. However, in our constant desire to seek out places for Dine on Line readers that are excellent value, the odd gem does pop up out of the blue, and the Sir Christopher Wren's House Hotel overlooking the Thames fits the bill. More than 300 years after Sir Kit built the house as his own private retreat, it is still alive with history. The hotel now serves many functions as a hotel, conference centre, wedding location and plenty more. There are 70 bedrooms with all the luxurious modern amenities jostling with the old as in some of the suites with their four poster beds. The hotel has its own private car park which is very important in Windsor, especially in the summer. Strok's Restaurant is named after a famous Croatian racing driver who has sunk a small fortune into the hotel to make it one of the top hotels in the Thames Valley. This is not a bad place at all for a weekend break because the hotel has its own boat which enables guests to take champagne cruises on the Thames for anything from 1/2 hour to a four hour mini-cruise. What better way could there be than to spend a summer afternoon with a bottle of champagne cruising up to Taplow, or even farther?
