Alexander Wilson
American Ornithology published in 1808-1814, illustrated 268 species, including descriptions of 26 new species. He also conducted the first breeding bird census, in Bartram's garden, corrected earlier errors of taxonomy, and published many observations of natural history. His 1810 meeting with Audubon probably inspired Audubon to pubish his own book on birds, and he also influenced many later artists and ornithologists. He died in 1813. Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography, edited by James Grant Wilson and John Fiske. 6 vols. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1887-1889 was the "most-quoted" biographical source for 19th and early 20th America. Appleton's, due to its age, reflects the bias and prejudice of late 19th Century America. It is also estimated that 100 to 200 of the 35,000 biographies are entirely fictitious. Additionally, the OCR technology used to transfer the text to the web was, at best, only a 99% accurate. Nancy Wilson Alexander Shepherd
    May 17, 1941 Palestine, Illinois
Milford, Decatur County, Indiana. October 14, 1876
This so far as I know is the family history of Nancy Wilson, Later Nancy Wilson Alexander and later Nancy Wilson Alexander Shepherd, widow of John Donathen Shepherd. This is as given in her own words on the day above written. "My father, James Wilson, was born in Virginia, Old "Dominion, in Hardin County, about a farm located on a stream known as "Forest Run" , in the year 1768. He remained there until his removal west in the town of Romney on our way to Ohio. We had two six horse teams and three loose horses. When we arrived at Brownstown in Fayette County, Pennsylvania father purchased a flat boat, for which he paid $100.00, hiring a captain whose services were paid for by moving his family in our boat, putting wagons and plunder in the boat. Father and Mother took the horses overland. The Monongahela River being very low, the trip was very tedious, although many Parkers and others came down about this time and settled in Clark County, Illinois, where some of their descendents now live. I was 13 years old at the time. My father, when he left Virginia, had eleven children, all living to have families of their own, except one daughter, Maria, who died in her eighth year in the fall of 1819 in Palestine, Crawford County, being buried on the "Knoll" north west of Palestine, about one half mile from town, on land which is owned by Mrs. Eliza Ann Patton. The remains were afterwards removed to the cementary established by the settlers. "The Grove" being the burying ground of the "Scouts an Rangers" of an earlier day.

    Alexander Wilson (Glasgow)
This founder is treated to an excellent exposition by Philip Gaskell in his book on the eighteenth-century printers to Glasgow University. He the subject of some discussion by Johnson and Berry in their book on types. Wilson's first known specimen sheet was issued in 1772 however, William Rind seems to be using these types as early as February, 1770 in his Virginia Gazette. Wilson types are also found in the work of other printers prior to the release of the first specimen indicating a strong word-of-mouth promotion of the fonts among printers and/or agents supplying printers. (This particular subject deserves more study and will be treated to such by the project in the future.) The foundry was first established at St. Andrew's in 1742 in a partnership with John Baine. In 1744 the whole operation was moved to Glasgow and Wilson began work with the Glasgow University Printers, Robert and Andrew Foulis. Specifics:

    ALEXANDER WILSON (1766-1813)
American Ornithology; or, the Natural History of the Birds of the United States . Philadelphia: Bradford and Inskeep, 1808-1814. 9 volumes. Naturalist William Bartram, Alexander Wilson's neighbor on the Schuylkill River just below Philadelphia, encouraged Wilson to collect specimens of birds and learn to draw and paint them. Wilson, an ornithologist, produced this comprehensive work, covering the eastern United States north of Florida, based almost entirely on his own observations. The plates were produced by engravings from his own drawings; Wilson colored a sample proof for use as a model by hand-colorists. American Ornithology is a landmark in American natural history. Gift of Joseph Y. Jeanes, Jr.
