City of London Theatre
John H. Wilkins
It was customary for a playhouse to have a number of dramatists (or "hacks," as they were usually called) continuously providing a company with the scripts. Some of such dramatists wrote several hundreds of scripts during their lifetime. The output is awesome, but one has to keep in mind that those plays for the most part were the translations or adaptations from French; from popular novels; later in the century more and more often from the news.
Mr. Wilkins
John Wilkins was a playwright associated with the City of London Theatre. He died on August 29th, 1853, at the age of twenty six. His greatest success came with the play called Civilization . In all, the City of London produced 16 of his plays, a number posthumously. Wilkins career, as described by Williams, seems to be all too typical for a dramatist in the mid-nineteenth century.
"...his newly-acquired fame was ... brought to a premature close by death ... before he had been able to reap any substantial gain from his recent literary successes. So far, indeed, was this from being the case, that Mr. Wilkins had been thankful to obtain an engagement, to act in small parts, at Sadler's Wells Theatre, where he had played Hecate in Macbeth , only two nights before his decease. For John Wilkins had been simply "a poor player", ready to eke out his slender salary, by undertaking the humble duties of authorship, at a minor theatre; that is to say, he had to write, alter, adapt, or rearrange, for a stipend of about thirty-five shillings a week, any sort of dramatic handiwork set to him by his manager.

John Wilkins' world was ballet By Diane Wright
Times Snohomish County bureau John Wilkins E-mail this article Print this article Search web archive Even when he lost his balance and chemotherapy had robbed him of his hair, John Wilkins kept dancing. And when he could no longer dance, or even stand, he still ran the Olympic Ballet Theatre from his Edmonds bedroom. Mr. Wilkins died Friday (Jan. 31) of brain cancer. He was 57. "There is a lot to go through when you're emotionally involved in something as expressive as the arts," said Helen Wilkins, his wife of 34 years. "Together, we felt we were two sides of a coin. We were soul mates; that brought us through a lot, thick and thin. We knew a deep core held us together, no matter what." Since 1981, Olympic Ballet has been one of the leading organizations uniting North and South Snohomish County artistically, and the couple's vision extended beyond the region. The company now presents annual productions in Edmonds, Everett, Bellevue, Kirkland and Seattle, and it will present Mr. Wilkins' young people's ballets "Peter and the Wolf" and "Madeline and the Bad Hat" in Everett and Kirkland this month and at Seattle's Moore Theatre in March. Mr. Wilkins, who had served on the board of the South Snohomish Chamber of Commerce and was the past chairman of the Snohomish County Tourism Bureau board of directors, often talked about the arts as a nexus between business and culture. It was his vision that first transformed a small-college auditorium into a winter fairyland for the company's first performance of "The Nutcracker" in Edmonds in 1982.

Head of School J.M.Wilkins@exeter.ac.uk I am a specialist in the history of food in Greco-Roman culture, with current interests in literature (especially comic drama) and medicine (especially nutrition). The texts I am currently working on are the Deipnosophistae (Philosophers at Dinner) of Athenaeus and On the Powers of Foods of Galen, both written in the last 2nd/early 3rd centuries AD, at a time when Greek authors were reviewing the previous millennium of Greek culture. I enjoy spending time in the countries of Europe, eating unusual food and (best of all) sitting round a table with friends, sharing food and drink and arguing about things that really matter. I have co-organised conferences on food, comedy, Athenaeus and international exchange in Britain and abroad. I am also developing electronic aids to teaching and research. I have strong links and a number of shared projects with colleagues in Paris. I have had research grants from the AHRB and the Wellcome Trust for visits to Germany and Poland. I was a visiting professor in Paris in 2000. My publications include Euripides: Heraclidae (Oxford, 1993)

Wright Henderson; el (1924), de Fritz Mauthner; Delphos (1935) de E. Sylvia Pankhurst; Dangerous Thoughts (1939), de Lancelot Hogben. The 14th edition of the does not include the article on John Wilkins. This omission seems justified if we remember how trivial the article was (20 lines of purely biographical data: Wilkins was born in 1614; Wilkins died in 1672; Wilkins was chaplain of Charles Louis, Elector Palatine; Wilkins was Warden of Wadham College, Oxford; Wilkins was the first secretary of the Royal Society of London, etc.); the omission is an error if we consider the speculative works of Wilkins. He abounded in happy curiosities: theology, cryptography, music, the fabrication of transparent beehives, the course of an invisible planet, the possibility of a trip to the moon , the possibility and principles of a world language. To this latter problem he dedicated the book

336 pages, 23 illustrations, 3 maps,
bibliographical notes, index, $24.95, cloth. Naturalist and conservation leader John Muir's life and dedication to the preservation movement are discussed in a new book published by the University of Oklahoma Press. John Muir: Apostle of Nature, by Thurman Wilkins, is Volume 8 in The Oklahoma Western Biographies. Nearly a century after John Muir's death, his works remain in print, his name is familiar, and his thought is much with us. How Muir's life made him a leader and brought him insights destined to resonate for decades is the central question underlying this biography by Thurman Wilkins. Born in Scotland, Muir came from a stern background of religious fundamentalism. Life grew sterner yet when the family immigrated to the United States and undertook the backbreaking task of developing a farm in Wisconsin, but Muir's fertile mind enabled him to escape farm drudgery by means of bizarre inventions. Armed with a university introduction to geology and botany, he became a consummate walker, tramping the Canadian forests, the southeastern woodlands, the Sierra Nevada, and several Alaskan glaciers until he had learned about wilderness at nature's own knee. Profoundly attached to dramatic wild places and plants, and to the Sierra and the redwoods in particular, Muir spearheaded efforts to protect forest areas and have some designated as national parks. Muir's wilderness ethic, as revealed in his books, letters, and journals, rests on his conception of the proper relationship between human culture and wild nature as one of humility and respect for all life.

BRCD 20004 When a jazz musician talks about economy,he is nottalking about ways to save money or the GNP... he is speaking abouttruth and beauty. The Boston-based guitarist John Wilkins knows all aboutthe art of economical playing and rings true at every turn. On this, his debut recording for the Brownstone label, Wilkins effortlessly strolls through each composition saying the right thing at the right time and more with less. "I never want to sound like I'm forcing anything," says Wilkins, a longtime faculty member at the Berklee College of Music, who has, no doubt, witnessed his share of guitar-slingers. "The music should justhappen. It should take on its own direction and energy." Strollin' takes listeners to a place where the finished product is one satisfying adventure. Joining this lyrical guitarist, on his personal joyridethrough such exceptional vehiclesas Grant Green's "Bluesin Maude's Flat,"Jobim's "O Grande Amore," amongothers, are bassist Bronek Suchanek and drummer Kenny Hadley , an empathetictrio of the highest order.Along the way, bassist

Maurice Wilkins
DNA ENABLER
A Nobel Prize winner in Physiology and Medicine in 1962 for his contribution to the discovery of the structure of DNA - the very essence of life itself - and a New Zealander by birth, Maurice Wilkins is among our greatest achievers. Research undertaken by Maurice Wilkins with support from Rosalind Franklin led to the discovery in 1953 by American geneticist James Watson and British biophysicist Francis Crick of the DNA molecule structure. The discovery revolutionised biology and medicine this century. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is known as the 'building blocks of life'. It contains material that is unique to the individual but also inherited. It can tell us possible future diseases an individual may suffer, or any number of human characteristics. Because it is unique, DNA testing is now a common tool used by police for accurately pinpointing criminals, the same way fingerprinting has been used for the last 100 years. Crick and Watson's announcement of a structure for DNA and how it is made of nucleic acid suggested how it might replicate, mutate, and be expressed. They proposed that the DNA molecule takes the shape of a double helix, an elegantly simple structure that resembles a gently-twisted ladder. The rails of the ladder are made of alternating units of phosphate and the sugar deoxyribose; the rungs are each composed of a pair of nitrogen-containing nucleotides.

Major General John Wilkins, Jr.
7th Quartermaster General
June 1796-June 1802
John Wilkins, Jr. was born in Donegal township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1761, but within two years his father had moved the family westward to Carlisle. Ardent supporters of the Revolution, both father and son fought in its campaigns. John Wilkins enlisted at the age of sixteen, still in his teens, he was officially listed as a surgeon's mate in the 4th Pennsylvania Regiment in 1780. He transferred to the 1st Pennsylvania at the beginning of 1783 and served until the close of the Revolutionary War. It was undoubtedly as a result of his service as surgeon's mate that he won the nickname "doctor." After the war to Wilkins established a store in western Pennsylvania. He was a brisk, energetic trader, alert to every venture that promised profit. By the summer of 1790 he moved his store to Presque Isle to tap into the fur trade. During the next five years Wilkins eagerly pursued every business opportunity. He engaged in a profitable trade. But his arrangements to deliver flour to the William Duer, who was supplying rations to the western army garrisons and was soon to be responsible for supplying the St. Clair expedition, did not prove advantageous. Wilkins continued to build up his business and land interests and was still serving as a Brigadier General of the Allegheny militia when Washington appointed him Quartermaster General of the army on June 1, 1796. He immediately wrote General Wayne that he would proceed "with all expedition" as soon as his instructions and commission arrived from the Secretary of War. Four months later he informed the commander-in-chief that he had ''particular business at Pittsburgh, which induces me to relinquish my appointment." Apparently his resignation was not accepted because he continued as Quartermaster General for six years until the office was abolished by Congress on March 16, 1802.
