Hermann Weyl Hilbert . After submitting a doctoral dissertation He attempted to incorporate electromagnetism into the geometric formalism of general relativity. Weyl published (1913) which united analysis, geometry and topology . He produced the first guage theory in which the Maxwell electromagnetic field and the gravitational field appear as geometrical properties of space-time. From 1923-38 he evolved the concept of continuous groups using matrix representations . With his application of group theory to quantum mechanics he set up the modern subject. He also made contributions on the uniform distribution of numbers modulo 1 which are fundamental in analytic number theory More recently attempts to incorporate electromagnetism into general relativity have been made by John Wheeler, Kaluza and others. These theories, like Weyl's, lack the connection with quantum phenomena that is so important for interactions other than gravitation.

Hermann Weyl was one of the leading mathematicians of the twentieth century. He established a group-theoretic basis for quantum mechanics, developed the theory of continuous groups in terms of matrix representations, and investigated the distribution and density-properties of various classes of numbers. Weyl's Ph.D. dissertation was written under David Hilbert at the University of Göttingen. After serving as chairman of mathematics at Zürich Technische Hochschule from 1913 to 1930, Weyl returned to Göttingen in 1930, where he filled the chair formerly occupied by Hilbert. Because of political troubles in Germany, Weyl emigrated to the United States in 1933, and he worked at the Institute for Advanced Study, in Princeton, New Jersey, until retirement in 1952. Emmy Noether, too, left Germany in 1933, and she, too, lectured at the Institute for Advanced Study on several occasions, traveling the short distance from her new home at Bryn Mawr College. When Noether died in 1935, Hermann Weyl gave a memorial address at Bryn Mawr College. Weyl was not only a mathematician and an admirer of Noether, but also an accomplished writer. He also made contributions on the uniform distribution of numbers modulo 1 which are fundamental in analytic number theory. More recently attempts to incorporate electromagnetism into general relativity have been made by John Wheeler. Wheeler's theory, like Weyl's, lacks the connection with quantum phenomena that is so important for interactions other than gravitation. Weyl's own comment, although half a joke, sums up his personality.

Weyl begann sein Studium 1904 in Göttingen, unter anderem bei David Hilbert, wechselte für kurze Zeit nach München und kehrte anschließend nach Göttingen zurück. Hier hatte er ab 1908 für fünf Jahre eine Dozentur. 1913 nahm er einen Ruf an die ETH Zürich an. 1930 wurde er Nachfolger Hilberts in Göttingen. 1933 emigrierte Weyl (wie viele andere Mathematiker aus dem Göttinger Institut, das bis dahin den "Nabel der mathematischen Welt" dargestellt hatte) in die USA, unter anderem deshalb, weil seine Frau Helene Jüdin war. Er, mütterlicherseits verwandt mit Ernst Barlach, fühlte sich sehr mit seiner Schleswig-Holsteinischen Heimat und seinem "Geliebten Deutsch" verbunden. Noch 1929 hatte er einen günstigen und ehrenvollen Ruf nach Princeton u.a. deshalb abgelehnt, weil er "dies wohl doch auf die Dauer schwer ertragen würde, aus dem Born der Muttersprache herausgerissen zu werden." Für das Mathematische Deutschland bedeutete Weyls Weggang in die USA einen unersätzlichen Verlust. Nach seiner Emeritierung 1951 in Princeton war Weyl wieder in Zürich und Göttingen tätig. Die Ehrenbürgerwürde seiner Geburtsstadt Elmshorn wurde ihm drei Wochen vor seinem Tode in Zürich verliehen.

Weyl was one of the greats among twentieth century mathematicians. I read his book, Group Theory and Quantum Mechanics , as a student. This book was written at an unlucky time (first ed. in German, 1928). Dirac had predicted the existence of positively charged particles of the same mass as the electron, in 1927. Since at that time there were no such particles, but the proton existed and lacked its own theory, Weyl tried out the idea that the proton was the predicted positively charged particle; its mass was conjectured by Weyl to have been altered from that of the electron by gravitational interactions. This was reported in the book; so an otherwise useful account of group theory suffered from the distraction of this brave attempt. The positron was discovered just after Weyl's book was published.
