    Walter Frank Raphael Weldon
Weldon was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1890. In this year he succeeded Professor Sir E. Ray Lankester as Jodrell professor of zoology at University College, London. His tenure of the Jodrell chair (1891-99) was a period of intense activity. A brilliant lecturer and endowed with the power of exciting enthusiasm, Weldon soon attracted a large class, and his association with Professor Karl Pearson led to increased energy in the special line of research which he had initiated. In 1894 Weldon became the secretary of a committee of the Royal Society for conducting statistical inquiries into the measurable characteristics of plants and animals. In 1894, Weldon stated that "the questions raised by the Darwinian hypothesis are purely statistical, and the statistical method is the only one at present obvious by which that hypothesis can be experimentally checked." In 1899 Weldon was elected to the Linacre professorship of comparative anatomy at Oxford. Though the Oxford life afforded opportunities for greater intellectual leisure, Weldon disdained to make use of them. He had on hand numerous exacting projects and he tried to deal with them all at once. His leisure hours at Oxford were spent in long bicycle rides, during which he studied the fauna of the neighbourhood. His vacations were spent in journeys to various parts of the continent, where he worked at his statistical calculations and collected material for fresh lines of research.

After three years at the school, followed by several months of private study he entered University College London. There he studied a wide range of subjects and was taught mathematics by Henrici . Weldon was most impressed with Henrici 's lectures and felt that he was the first naturally gifted teacher he studied under. In 1877 he went to King's College, his aim being to enter the medical profession. He moved to St John's College in Cambridge in 1878 and his interests turned to zoology. After graduating he went to Naples working at the Zoological Station. He undertook research June to January, teaching at Cambridge for two terms each year. His teaching was described in these glowing terms:- Seldom is it given to a man to teach as Weldon taught. He lectured almost as one inspired. His extreme earnestness was only equalled by his lucidity. He awoke enthusiasm even in the dullest, and had the divine gift of compelling interest.

Opposition to Bateson Opposition before 1926 Walter Frank Raphael Weldon and the Biometricians Research and Teaching at Cambridge Edward B. Poulton ... Steven Jay Gould W hile opposition to Bateson and his advocacy of Mendel's work occurred during his lifetime, a not unusual phenomenon in human affairs, it is of note that the opposition continued long after his death in 1926. Indeed, opposition seemed to increase as the 20th century progressed, reaching an apparent apogee in 1996 when an article entitled " Dobzhansky, Bateson and the Genetics of Speciation " by H. Allen Orr was published in the " Perspectives " section of Genetics , the journal of the Genetics Society of America ( Reginald Punnett and William Bateson 1907 Opposition before 1926 The following is as much of interest for what it does not contain, as for what it contains: The Dictionary of National Biography (Oxford University Press) has this entry for Walter Frank Raphael Weldon W.F.R. Weldon (1860-1906) was born in London on 15 March 1860. In 1867 he matriculated at University College, London, with the intention of qualifying for a medical career. After a year he was transferred to King's College, London. In 1878 he entered St John's College, Cambridge. At Cambridge, Weldon came under the influence of Francis Balfour and abandoned medical studies for zoology.

    I Closed My Eyes:

    Revelations of a Battered Woman

    by Michele Weldon
Whether you've been in an abusive relationship, known someone in one, or have no personal experience with the phenomenon, this memoir will challenge all your beliefs about domestic violence. Weldon, an intelligent, self-confident, talented journalist, writes the story of her nine-year abusive marriage, the reasons she stayed, and the reasons she left. The accounts of abuse are unsettlingly juxtaposed with memories of love and romance, but the combination helps to explain the difficulty she had in leaving. Weldon chronicles every second of the passionate, painful marriage, the divorce, the loving, forgiving, growing, and moving on. It is so powerful readers will either love it or hate it; either way, they should learn from it. During a time when memoirs are the hot ticket to publication, Weldon's is written better than most and carries a strong message.
When Violence Begins at Home :

    A Comprehensive Guide to

    Understanding and Ending Domestic Abuse

by Karen Wilson The author reflects her 17 years on the front lines working against domestic violence after surviving an abusive relationship herself. Karen Wilson provides a comprehensive manual for counselors, legal professionals, and victims of abuse, addressing behavioral patterns, the role of alcohol and drugs, how to leave abusive relationships, legislation on domestic violence, and more.

    History of Statistics
History has shaped our past; history will shape our future. Newton once said that he owned his success to his standing on the shoulders of scientific giants. History of statistics provides a ladder by which young statisticians climb to the shoulders of great statisticians. In the uneasy flow of human wisdom, statisticians have developped stochastic models of the ideal probability space, have built different inference bridges for crossing the gap between the data space and the probability space. To trace the development of these different models and of these inference methodologies is to inquire into the fasicnating intellectual tradition of statisticians and to test the null that staticians, together with scientists and engineers from other fields, have built the edifice of our scientific and social worlds. NEWS and TIDBITS for December, 2000 A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF YOU from the Officers and Board of Directors of CNYBA! I hope all of our members who wanted to attend made your reservations for our December 10th Christmas PartyThunder Mountain Bluegrass from Mass. will be entertaining as well as Andy Pawlenko and the Smokey Hollow Boys. We are all looking forward to good fellowship, great music and a scrumptious buffet. Many thanks to Helen Weldon and her daughter Betty Jane for making our favors and many thanks to Marion LaMont and Sam Murphy for making the centerpieces. These contributions will make our party very festive. As the year 2000 runs out, I think back to our past year and feel very fortunate for the Officers and Board Members who have worked so very hard for the prosperity of our organization. Working side-by-side with each and every one of them has made the year 2000 enjoyable and a learning experience. I am very proud to be part of a group that is so dedicated to their principles. Although our music is straying beyond what we representas is the case all overI feel that every note played comes from the heart of the person(s) performing. Bluegrass is what we represent and bluegrass is what we should present. I am looking forward to another year filled with music and fellowship. Thayle The Salmon River Boys entertained us at Raphael's Restaurant on November 26 for our monthly jamboree. Their professionalism was obvious as they played for many hours, offering a wide variety of music which was enjoyed by a sizable crowd. During intermission we were entertained by Joe Bedus who played harmonica and accordianfirst time entertaining a crown and doing a greatjob. Also playing during intermission were Ray Crouch, Carol McGinley, Rod Macomber and Jim Hackettas usual doing a super job. Thanks to all.

    ACTIVITY REPORT
    A GENERAL
FFRC hosted the Final Research Coordination Meeting 10-14 July 2001. The meeting was attended by participating members from Vienna, Greece, Italy, USA, Philippines and Argentina, and invited Australian observers from ANSTO, NSW Ag, SA Primary Industries, MIA Fruit Fly Committee as well as Dr Max Scott from New Zealand. FFRC presentations were given by Alfie Meats, Stuart Gilchrist, Cindy An, JingTing Zhao and Deborah Shearman. FFRC thanks the Dean (Professor Beryl Hesketh) and the Head of School (A/Professor Roz Hinde) for financial support for this meeting.
This contract was awarded to FFRC in July 1999 with the work subcontracted to Glenn Graham at the University of Queensland. Glenn advised on 17 October 2000 that he had been involved in considerable negotiations with various government and non-government agencies, and had not finished the work. Deb Shearman agreed to undertake the work needed to complete the contract using contract money sent to UoQ and not yet used. The final report was sent to AQIS in August 2001
The NSW, Vic, SA and WA State Departments of Agriculture through PIRSA contracted the FFRC to analyse fruit fly outbreak data held by these states to determine whether the existing suspension zones for Med-fly and Q-fly were valid. Drs Alfie Meats, Alan Clift and Merryl Robson undertook this work. A draft report was presented to a workshop organised by FFRC on campus in October 2000. The final report was presented to the Plant Health Committee for ratification in June 2001. The findings will be used by AQIS for discussions with Australia's horticultural trading partners to reduce suspension zones.
