Britannica CD Index Articles Dictionary Help Weierstrass, Karl (Theodor Wilhelm) (b. Oct. 31, 1815, Ostenfelde, Bavaria [Germany]d. Feb. 19, 1897, Berlin), German mathematician, one of the founders of the modern theory of functions. In 1841 Weierstrass obtained his teacher's certificate and began a 14-year career as a teacher of mathematics at the Pro-Gymnasium in Deutsche Krone (1842-48) and at the Collegium Hoseanum in Braunsberg (1848-56). During this time of isolation from other mathematicianshis salary was so small that he could not even correspond with his fellowsWeierstrass worked unceasingly on analysis. He conceived and in large part carried out a program known as the arithmetization of analysis, under which analysis is based on a rigorous development of the real number system. His preoccupation with rigour in mathematics is illustrated by his later development (1861) of a function that, though continuous, had no derivatives at any point. This idiosyncrasy of an apparently differentiable function caused consternation among the school of analysts who depended heavily upon intuition. Weierstrass' work on the theory of functions was guided by his desire to complete the work begun by Niels Abel of Norway and Karl Jacobi of Germany, primarily Abel's theorem that the number of independent integrals of algebraic functions is finite and Jacobi's discovery of multiple periodic functions of many variables.

Bolzano Abel ve Cauchy 'nin baþlattðý matematiði kurallar baðlama çabasýný daha da ileri götürerek bir sayý dizisinin limiti, sürekli deðiþken vb. kavramlarýna iliþkin henüz yeterince açýk olmayan formülleþtirmeleri aritmetik eþitsizlikler biçiminde ifade etti ve böylece matematikte sezginin rolünü daha da azalttý. Bu kavramlarý iyice irdeleyerek sürekli ve hiçbir noktasýnda türevi alýnamayan bir fonksiyonun kurulmasý problemini ortaya attý. Bu fonksiyonu düzgün yakýnsak sonsuz bir seriyle tanýmladý. Karl Herman Amandus Schwarz Schwarz studied chemistry at Berlin, but Kummer and Weierstrass influenced him to change to mathematics. Schwarz attended Weierstrass's lectures on the integral calculus in 1861, and the notes that Schwarz took at these lectures still exist. His marriage was a mathematical one since he married Kummer's daughter. Outside mathematics, he was the captain of the local Voluntary Fire Brigade and he assisted the stationmaster at the local railway station by closing the doors of the trains. Schwarz worked on the conformal mappings of polyhedral surfaces onto the spherical surface. His alternative procedure for solving the Dirichlet problem soon became a standard technique. He also worked on minimal surfaces, a characteristic problem of the calculus of variations. His most important work was for Weierstrass's 70th birthday. Schwarz answered the question of whether a given minimal surface really yields a minimal area. The ideas in this work led Emile Picard to his existence proof for solutions of differential equations. It also contains the inequality for integrals now known as the Schwarz inequality.
