Groundskeeper Willie
The Commentary
STEVE: Although Simpsonmania (tm) will probably reign supreme, and people will blindly vote for Groundskeeper Willie, I'll cast away the shackles of popularity and choose the clear victor, William Wallace. There are simply too many reasons to choose him over this cartoon buffoon. Starting with the obvious, Wallace was a great warrior who killed many in battle with his own hands, even in the face of adversity. Often he wasn't able to see because of the masses of blue paint covering his face. Having to remember to speak with a Scottish accent all the time demanded painstaking concentration. Not to mention the airiness of his kilt was surely distracting. Even with all this working against him, he still defeated the British many times, and even bagged himself the Prince of England's hot french wife. He's a man who knows how to get what he wants. On the other hand, we have Groundskeeper Willie, who is stuck as an elementary school janitor for chrissake! He's a clueless, incompetent moron. Bart, a measly fourth grade flunkie, has repeatedly made a mockery of him. He's exposed Willie to the world by lifting up his kilt, had him scoot through ductwork trying to catch his dog, and even joyrided in Willie's prized possession, his red tractor (Who Willie would marry "if it wirnt agint Gid's law").

Smith's Note: The following 'Bibliography of Wallace Archival Sources' was provided by Michael Shermer (skepticmag@aol.com), Editor-in-Chief of Skeptic Magazine http://www.skeptic.com/ ), and was compiled during his research for his doctoral dissertation on Wallace (Shermer 1991). The bibliography is published as an appendix in his biography entitled: In Darwin's Shadow: The Life and Science of Alfred Russel Wallace (Oxford University Press, 2002).] [Note from Michael Shermer: I am pleased to provide this bibliography to Charles Smith's web page on Alfred Russel Wallace because he has provided an invaluable service to Wallace and Darwin scholars as well as historians of science in general with this remarkable archival achievement. My biography of this most fascinating scientist and scholar benefited greatly from Smith's important work, for which I am grateful.]
Bibliography of Wallace Archival Sources Working approximately eight to ten hours a day, six days a week, it took my wife and I five and a half weeks to read thoroughly through all the primary source materials. It was a surprisingly easy task, enhanced by Wallace's legible handwriting, along with the majority of those who wrote to Wallace, with the exception of Darwin, Huxley, Spencer, and Lyell. All of the archivists were quite helpful, and some of them very knowledgeable on both Wallace and nineteenth-century evolutionary thought, particularly Gina Douglas at the Linnean Society, an excellent research facility and a warm introduction to the Wallace archives.

Europe, the Necessary Partner
William Wallace

From Foreign Affairs May/June 2001
Summary: In many areas, transatlantic cooperation is stronger than ever before. Yet the common perception is of an increasingly fraught relationship, as evidenced by the well-known disputes over beef, bananas, and burden sharing. Assumptions are diverging over security risks and cultural values. Each side criticizes the other's unwieldy policymaking process without admitting its own shortcomings, while leaders pander to domestic interests and prejudices without educating voters on international issues. Europe nonetheless remains indispensable to a multilateral U.S. foreign policy. The Bush administration must acknowledge the European Union as a true partner, in political and military matters as well as in economics. America cannot expect its allies to share the burdens of global leadership without allowing them their say in the issues at stake.
William Wallace is Professor of International Relations at the London School of Economics and Liberal Democrat Spokesman on Defense in the House of Lords.

William Wallace for governor
Braveheart was an inspiring epic on the big screen and William Wallace (Mel Gibson) was a man of courage and conviction. Louisiana, with its challenges, needs to elect such a leader,a warrior,in 2003. When Wallace and his band of countrymen faced the armies of England on the battlefield, the odds were against them and many considered giving up. Wallace spoke with passion and said, "I see a whole army of countrymen here in defiance of tyranny. You've come to fight as free men, and free you are. What will you do without freedom? Will you fight? Fight and you may die. Run and you'll live,at least for a while. And dying in your bed many years from now, will you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that, for just one chance, just one, to come back and tell our enemies that they may take our lives but they will never take our freedom? Erin go bracht! (Long live Ireland!)" His words inspired his men and lifted them up. They charged onto the battlefield and claimed victory.

The Flores Historiarum
On William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, c. 1307
[Colby Introduction]: The Flores Historiarum , once ascribed to Matthew of Westminster, is a patchwork of compilation and original composition which begins at the Creation and closes at 1327. Dr. Luard, its latest editor, believes that it was begun by John de Cella, twenty-first abbot of St. Alban's. He died in 1214 and the work was continued at St. Alban's till about 1265. Afterwards various monks of Westminster brought it to the accession of Edward III. One distinct section of the chronicle lies between the Battle of Evesham and the death of E dward I, and from the end of this part diatribes against Wallace and Bruce are quoted. On William Wallace: About the time of the festival of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a certain Scot, by name William Wallace, an outcast from pity, a robber, a sacrilegious

Scottish Arms.
The Lion to Wallace
After David I's death, his grandson Malcolm IV succeeded him to the throne of Scotland in 1153. It was a turbulent and precarious reign. There were rebellions in Moray and Galloway. Malcolm IV was surrounded by Norman advisors and this, in itself, caused many uprisings. It took several attempts before Malcolm could quell the revolts with Norman help. But the bad feelings continued.
In 1157, English King Henry II Plantagenet succeeded in getting lands back in Northumbria by threat of force. Malcolm IV aquiesced and gave back the land with no opposition. When he died in 1165, his brother, known as William the Lion (for his red rampant lion on a yellow field) was king of Scotland. These colors and the red rampant lion were to become Scotland's heraldic colors (flag).
Royal Shield of Scotland.
Fifteen years would pass before William the Lion was able to redress the balance. In 1189, Richard Coeur de Lion (Richard the Lionhearted), needing money for a Crusade, agreed to give back the castles and renounce his feudal superiority over Scotland in return for 10,000 marks. This sum was a huge sum of money for Scotland to pay and it took them many years and much taxation before they were able to repurchase their own castles and land.
Three years later, Pope Celestine III released the Scottish church from English supremacy and declared that thenceforth, it should be under direct jurisdiction of Rome. It was the beginning of nearly 100 years of relative peace between England and Scotland.

A mural showing St. Margaret, Malcolm III, MacBeth and Grauch(L to R).
Scotland under MacBeth's Successors
Malcom was not a wise or consistent leader though, and the treaty dissolved in time. Instead, he married Margaret, an English Princess who had taken refuge in Scotland along with her brother Edgar the Aetheling, after the Norman conquest of England begun in 1066. Most of all Anglo-Saxon (English) Nobility fled to the Lowlands of Scotland as safe haven from the Norman invaders. This is the beginning of the separation of Lowland Scotland and the Highlands and the Isles of Scotland. But, I'm getting ahead of myself....................
The Norman Invasion and it's Effect on Scotland
The Norman invasion of England was almost as important for Scotland as it was for England. Henceforth, England and her rulers (now Normans) were in one way or another to play an even greater part in Scottish affairs.
Saxons, Angles from England, sought safe haven from the Normans in Lowland Scotland. Lowland Scotland, already a mix of Scots, Britons, what was left of Pictish culture, and now Anglo-Saxons collectively went on to be known as Scots, but never again the same as the Highland and Isles Scots. The Lowland and Highland gap, already there, was getting wider with every generation. English and Norman influences were to make themselves increasingly felt in the Lowlands.
