Theodore von Karman Born in Jozsefvaros district of Budapest Hungary, on May 11, 1881. von skolloskislaki Karman Todor became to be known as Theodore von Karman. His scientific reputation rested on a series of profound insights on the nature of aerodynamics, which he demonstrated through a highly intuitive style of applied mathematics. He published more then two hundred papers, which laid much of the technical basis of flight. He forged scientific cooperation and founded a number of powerful aerospace institutions. In 1911 deed hij onderzoek aan de alternerende dubbele rij van wervels achter een vlakke plaat in een stroming. Dit verschijnsel is later de Von Karman wervelstraat genoemd. In het volgende jaar werd Von Karman directeur van het Luchtvaart Instituut in Aken. Hij bezocht de Verenigde Staten in 1926 en vier jaar later werd hij directeur van het Aeronautical Laboratory van het California Institute of Technology.
In 1933 stichtte hij het U.S. Institute of Aeronautical Sciences, waar hij verder ging met zijn onderzoek aan vloeistofmechanica, turbulentie theorie en supersonisch vliegen. Hij bestudeerde ook toepassingen van de wiskunde op het gebied van werktuigbouwkunde, vliegtuigconstructies en bodemerosie.

Theodore von Karman Born: May 11, 1881, Budapest Died: May 6, 1963, Aachen, W. Germany Early Life Von Karman was born in Budapest and was the third of five children of Maurice and Helene von Karman. His father was a professor at the University of Budapest and commissioner of the Ministry of Education. Von Karman showed a natural mathematical facility at an early age and was well on his way to becoming a child prodigy when his father, fearing that he would become a mathematical freak, guided him toward engineering. On completing his undergraduate studies in 1902 at the Royal Polytechnic University in Budapest, he decided to pursue his engineering career in the academic world. Between 1903 and 1906 he served on the faculty of the Polytechnic University and as a consultant to the principal Hungarian engine manufacturer. The research that he conducted on the strength of materials prepared the way for important later contributions to the design of aircraft structure. After and all night party, a friend suggested that, instead of going to sleep, they watch the French aviation pioneer Henri Farman fly his machine. This flight provided the inspiration for the young man that was to become a founder of the aeronautical and astronautical sciences. In World War I, von Karman was called into duty. While at the Military Aircraft Factory a Fischamend in Austria, his involvement led to the development of the first helicopter.

Prize Committee
The committee will be an ad hoc committee. On the advice of the vice president-at-large, the president will appoint three members, designating one member to be the chair. The appointments should be made at least eighteen months before the prize award date. Committee members will be members of SIAM. The term of office of the committee will be from the date of appointment until the date of the awarding of the prize. If the committee reports that no prize can be awarded and this report is accepted by the executive committee of the council, then the committee's duties will be completed. The committee will determine its own rules of operation. It may solicit suggestions for nominations from other members of the scientific community.
Selection Procedures
Eligibility
The prize will normally be awarded to a member of SIAM. It may be awarded to a nonmember, but the standards for this exception should follow the example set by the first award of this prize (Sir Geoffrey Taylor, 1972).
Nominations
The prize committee will report its findings to the president at least ten months prior to the prize award date. The prize committee must select at most one prize winner except in extraordinary cases. Exceptions to this rule must be approved in advance by the executive committee of the council. The nomination for the award must be accompanied by a written justification and a citation of about 100 words that can be read at award time. The president will report these findings to the executive committee of the council.

Dr. Theodore von Karman is considered to be one of the great aeronautical scientists of the twentieth century. Von Karman was born in Budapest and spent most of his life as a science teacher in Europe and the United States. Von Karman's contributions to the scientific community were significant and continue to have impact on modern testing technologies. He developed many theories of aeronautical and space science, such as the effects of forces and currents on aircraft and spacecraft. He was instrumental in developing supersonic aircraft and Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles. Von Karman was also involved in the practical side of developmental breakthroughs in aviation. He helped develop the world's largest rocket corporation, the Aerojet-General Corp. He was also instrumental in founding the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to develop rocket propulsion. He was also responsible for the establishment of AGARD, the aeronautical research arm of NATO, serving as the organization's first chairman. But the contribution to science and engineering that stands out most in the minds of Middle Tennesseans is von Karman's role in the establishment of the Arnold Engineering Development Center.

Described as one of the 8 true geniuses, Von Kármán's inspiration for aeronautics came about during doctoral study at one of the world's foremost universities in the 1900s, Göttingen . After an all-night party in Paris, a friend suggested that, instead of going to sleep, they watch the French aviation pioneer Henri Farman fly his machine. Farman successfully completed a 2-kilometre (1.25-mile) course as Von Kármán embarked upon a long career in the aeronautical and astronautical sciences. The environment at the University of Göttingen was admirably suited to develop von Kármán's talents. He responded to the teaching of Ludwig Prandtl , an astute observer of nature, and to the school of the eminent mathematician Felix Klein, which stressed the fullest use of mathematics and of the basic sciences in engineering to increase technological efficiency. In 1911 he made an analysis of the alternating double row of vortices behind a bluff body (one having a broad, flattened front) in a fluid stream, now famous as Kármán's Vortex Street. In 1912 he became Professor as well as Director of the Aeronautical Institute Aachen Germany, at the age of 31, remaining until 1930.

    In 1944, he established the Air Corps Scientific Advisory Group for General Henry H. Arnold, commander of the U.S. Army Air Forces in World War II. In 1951, he launched the Advisory Group for Aeronautical Research and Development (AGARD), where he served as chairman until his death. He was involved in several other international scientific groups and discussions about science and technology. He has laboratories bearing his name at the California Institute of Technology and at the Arnold Engineering Development Center of the U.S. Air Force at Tullahoma, Tennessee. President John F. Kennedy awarded him the first National Medal of Science in 1963.
