Parish History Continued A Religious Education Program was established in 1991, enrolling 300 children from preschool through eigth grade. Geraldine Radke was the first Director of Religious Education, assisted by Sue McNulty. The present interim Director of Religious Education is Norma Messaglia, assisted by Jill Topf, Lee Glorioso, Robbie Anderson, and Maureen Krzyminski. Sessions are held at Century School and in the Church complex, and today serve approximately 1300 children. Cardinal Bernadin visited St. Francis of Assisi in August, 1991, to install Father Upton as pastor, and spoke of the "journey and dream of St. Francis." This became the theme for the building project: "Journey in Faith...Dream for the Future." As the parish continued to grow, the commitment of many lay people was instrumental in establishing the Helping Hands, Publicity, and Welcoming Committees, as well as the Religious Education Board and the Liturgical Commission. In the Fall of 1991, the Building Committee was formed to select and architect and determine the needs of the parish regarding the building project. Ground was broken in June 1994 at a ceremony led by the vicar, Bishop Alfred Abramowicz. On Sunday, October 5th, 1995, the first mass in the new church was concelebrated by Father Upton and the newly-ordained Father Michael Weidman, who was assigned as associate pastor in July of that year. Bishop John Gorman, vicar, was also present. On April 14, 1996, Cardinal Bernadin formally dedicated St. Francis of Assisi Church.
