Introduction
Conquerors of Transoxiana Travelers to Transoxiana Golden Samarkand ... Asia Resources
Phoenix Cities of Central Asia
Architecture of Samarkand, I By Eileen K. Gunn The Registan The Registan, which the 19th-century British traveler George Curzon called "the noblest public square in the world," is the main square of the old city, and the most spectacular architectural complex still standing in Central Asia. From this huge square in the heart of the city, which was planned by Timur as a grand covered bazaar, six main roads led out to six city gates, and thence to the rest of the known world: China, India, Russia, and Persia and the Mediterranean. In an urban renewal project as callous as any in the 20th century, Timur razed the houses and shops along the new right-of-way, evicting residents without notice and sending them scurrying with whatever of their possessions they could carry. According to Clavijo, the main road was constructed in 20 days. In the Registan: The madrassah of Ulugh Beg Photo Credit: Daniel C. Waugh

THE LEGACY OF ULUGH BEG
Muhammed Taragai Ulugh Beg (1394-1449) was a Turk who ruled the province of Transoxiana (Maverannahr), a region situated between the River Oxus (Amu Darya) and the River Jaxartes (Syr Darya), the principal city of which was Samarkand. Ulugh Beg's grandfather was the famous conqueror Timur (1336-1405). Ulugh Beg became the ruler of Transoxiana in 1447 upon the death of his father. But his rule was of short duration. Two years later he was killed by an assassin hired by his son 'Abd al Latif. Were it only for his role as prince, viceroy, and martyr, few scholars would know of Ulugh Beg. But his memory lives on because he was an observatory builder, patron of astronomy, and astronomer in his own right. He was certainly the most important observational astronomer of the 15th century. He was one of the first to advocate and build permanently mounted astronomical instruments. His catalogue of 1018 stars (some sources count 1022) was the only such undertaking carried out between the times of Claudius Ptolemy (ca. 170 A.D.) and Tycho Brahe (ca. 1600). And, as we shall briefly discuss here, his attitude towards scientific endeavors was surprisingly modern. The administration of Transoxiana was the responsibility of Ulugh Beg's father for most of Ulugh Beg's life. The prince had the opportunity (and the inclination) to pursue scholarly matters. His interest in astronomy dates from an early age, when he visited the remains of the Maragha Observatory, made famous by the astronomer Nasir al- Din al-Tusi (1201-74). The principal accomplishment at Maragha was the Zij-i ilkhani, or Ilkhanic Tables.[2]

Fergana valley
I had been in Tashkent before in 1971 so I skipped it this time. I went directly by bus from Osh to Samarkand crossing the fertile Fergana valley and an part of Tajikistan without stopping. This great valley between the Tian Shan range to the north and the Alay mountains to the south enjoys the best agricultural land and climate of all Central Asia. A good place for apricot orchards such as this one.
Fergana valley
Greek, Persian and Chinese envoys came here as early as two centuries BC to trade with the prosperous kingdoms they found here. The Arabs came in the 8th century and converted the Buddhist turkic population to Islam. The Russians took the valley in the late 19th century along with the rest of Central Asia and introduced the intensive cultivation of cotton seen here. The communists went one step further and used the waters of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers to irrigate vast tracts of desert to grow cotton. They drew so much from these rivers that the volume of the Aral sea fell by 75% and its area by 50%. An ecological catastrophe!

Short Fiction With the pounding bass of "Paninero," Ulugh Beg glided though the club, effortlessly parting the crowd. More than a few of the dancers were openly admiring of his exotic looks which was intriguingly complemented by his Victorian dress. Crossing the floor to a dark, secluded table, Ulugh's piercing gaze detected the hideously warped Nosferatu lurking in the shadows. At last. After much searching, another piece of lore was about to be reclaimed for his master. The Nosferatu licked what remained of its lips with its long, scabarous tongue. Its right eye lolled horrifically in its socket, a sight so grotesque that it would have caused a lesser being to flinch. "Do you have the text," Ulugh queried? Reaching slowly toward a pocket, the Nosferatu hissed in the affirmative. "However, first, my price...I require information on the Council of Seven."

And what is in store for you? This month, there will the usual selection, including some completely off the top of my head sucky short fiction (if you want me to axe the short fiction, let me know...), a last-minute attempt to examine a card in-depth, and a couple of deck ideas. This month there will be no review of notables in vampiric society, however, stay tuned next month as we examine some of those who have received instruction at our hands, and their usefulness to our cause.

    A galaxia máis afastada

THE TRANSIT OF VENUS IN CENTRAL ASIA
May 27-June 9, 2004 per person, double occupancy from Houston, Texas USA.
    We can route you from many other U.S. and international gateways;
"LAND ONLY" PACKAGES without air are not available. * See details below.
In the 17th century a projected image of the sun was the safe way to view the progress of the transit. The transit is visible according to the REGION OF VISIBILITY graphic developed by F. Espenak and as such we have chosen the Central Asia region due to favorable weather prospects, proximity to viewing of the entire transit, and location away from possible middle east problems. Uzbekistan is the center of the tour route and was selected because Uzbekistan's Silk Road cities and the monuments they contain are legendary and with very good reason. The romance and mystery that still attaches to this little-known corner of the world make it an ideal next stop for travelers who have "been everywhere." The people of Uzbekistan, a multi-ethnic mosaic of Slavic and Asian nationalities, are friendly and cheerful hosts. PRELIMINARY ITINERARY Some modifications may occur due to routing and schedule changes in the region prior to the time of the tour.

    ...Beg
Ulugh Beg was the grandson of the Asian (Mongol) conquerer Timur. His father captured the city of Samarkand and gave it to Ulugh Beg. He was primarily an astronomer and he built an observatory, the construction beginning in 1428. In his observations he discovered a number of errors in the computations of Ptolemy. He compiled tables of sins and tans at 1 intervals. These displayed a high degree of accuracy, being correct to at least 8 decimal places. Ulugh Beg's politics were not up to his science and, on his father's death, he was unable to achieve power despite being an only son. He was eventually being put to death at the instigation of his own son.
