George Uhlenbeck 's ancestors had come first from Germany but then later generations were Dutch and served in the Dutch colonies. His father, Eugenius Marius Uhlenbeck was born in Java in what was then called the Dutch East Indies but is now Indonesia. In 1893 Eugenius Uhlenbeck, who served in the Dutch East Indian Army, married Anne Marie Beeger who was the daughter of a Dutch major general. Two of their children died of malaria at a very young age but four survived. Of the surviving children George was the second child, with an older sister Annie and two younger brothers Willem Jan and Eugenius Marius. When George was six years old the family moved permanently to Holland, setting up home in The Hague. There George attended elementary school followed by high school, or the higher burger school as it was then called. Uhlenbeck said [3]:- I was a very dutiful student, very dutiful. I always worked very regularly and I was always very good in class. I was certainly not clear until the last years in high school what I was going to do.

George Uhlenbeck , although born in Indonesia, was educated in the Netherlands. He studied for his doctorate at Leiden under the supervision of Ehrenfest. Uhlenbeck's doctoral work was of fundamental importance in quantum mechanics, systematising statistical notions and proposing electron spin. In fact he discovered electron spin in 1925, two years before he completed his doctorate. After being appointed to Michigan in 1927, he returned to the Netherlands in a chair in Utrecht. During his career he worked for periods in the USA (for example at Michigan and MIT) and for periods in the Netherlands. As well as fundamental work on quantum mechanics, Uhlenbeck worked on atomic structure and the kinetic theory of matter. He extended Boltzmann's equation to dense gases. Uhlenbeck was always very keen on clarity and a logical approach to all problems. He had a very significant influence on statistical mechanics and brought an area which was very varied and disjointed into some sort of structured whole. The collection is unprocessed and access is limited. A significant portion of the collection includes materials in Dutch. A preliminary inventory of the papers is available at the Archive Center. George Eugene Uhlenbeck (1900-1988) was a theoretical physicist best known for his contributions to the study of atomic structure, quantum and statistical mechanics, the kinetic theory of matter, and nuclear physics. He was born in Batavia, Java (then the Dutch East Indies, now Djakarta, Indonesia) on December 6, 1900. In 1907 his family settled in The Hague, Holland. Uhlenbeck graduated from the State University of Leiden, The Netherlands in 1920 and continued there with graduate study in the theory of atomic spectra under Paul Ehrenfest, earning his master's degree in 1922 and his Ph.D. in 1927. As doctoral students in 1925, Uhlenbeck and Samuel A. Goudsmit, who was later with Brookhaven National Laboratory, discovered electrons spin. Results of an experiment with heated hydrogen led them to conclude that the electron in the hydrogen atom was spinning. This concept revolutionized the understanding of the nature of atoms and is central to the study of atomic theory. Uhlenbeck's subsequent research focused on the statistical and kinetic theory of the equilibrium and non-equilibrium phenomena of physical systems. In 1927 Uhlenbeck accepted a position at the University of Michigan, where in 1939, he was named professor of theoretical physics. Though there were several interruptions in his career at Michigan, Uhlenbeck's affiliation with the school continued through 1960. Uhlenbeck returned to The Netherlands during 1935-1939 as professor at the State University of Utrecht. During the war years (1942-1945) he worked on the development of radar systems at MIT's Radiation Laboratory. After World War II he again returned to The Netherlands, serving at the University of Leiden and the University of Amsterdam. Uhlenbeck joined the Rockefeller Institute (later named The Rockefeller University) in 1961 and contributed to the development of its theoretical physics faculty. He retired from The Rockefeller University in 1974 and died at the age of 87 in his Boulder, Colorado home on October 31, 1988.
