There is a performance problem for students who need to combine different skills. Students spend so much time mastering the details that they often miss the point as to why there is a need for scientific computing. Using projects drawn from practical situations, and a good high-level package such as MATLAB, can overcome much of this. The difficulty associated with learning scientific programming is greatly alleviated. This in turn frees more time for studying more advanced methods. The need to combine ideas from different areas makes this an idealcandidate for both team-teaching and student teamwork on the projects. In this paper, we discuss the use of this approach in a variety of scientific computing courses at different levels. Concerning Peter Turner Peter Turner, the curator of this exhibition, lives in Wellington and has been engaged with various aspects of this medium for more than 25 years. In London, where he was born, he is well known for his editorship of Creative Camera , a magazine with an international reputation. As well as making Creative Camera over a 16 year period, Peter Turner has taught photography, written or picture-edited 10 books (including a best-selling history of photography), and been publisher of many more. All were concerned with the visual aspects of photography, which he has also written on for a wide variety of periodicals. Jazz at the Swan Thank You JAZZ LOVERS !!! The LIVE CD recording of 'THE PETER TURNER TRIO plus TWO' titled: LIVE AT THE SWAN was officially released at the January 19th JAZZ night, when all 5 performers were on hand to play together again and were available for autographs. Peter Turner who performs regularly at The Swan at Carp invited Scott Poll, Gerry Helke, John Steele and Glenn Robb to join him in recording a live CD in the authentic atmosphere of an English Country Pub. The recording took place over a period of four evenings in July The Swan at Carp is Ottawa Carleton's prime venue for live jazz! One Friday per month, the Peter Turner Trio (our house trio) entertains Swan customers with classic swing tunes and traditional jazz favourites, with a bit of latin and blues thrown in for good measure. New for 2001, most months will include an additional jazz night, featuring other local trios. There is no cover charge. (check our JAZZ coming events) The house trio often expands to include visiting musicians who "sit in" with the band. Some of the Ottawa area's finest musicians have been lured into the Swan by the trio's extensive repertoire and the casual, hospitable atmosphere of the sessions. On one ocasion, we enjoyed 10 "sit ins". The trio consists of trombonist Peter Turner, Gerry Helke on upright bass, and piano man John Steele. All three men have strong ties to the Ottawa Valley. Turner and Helke are both from Pembroke, Ontario and now reside in Ottawa. Steele lives in his hometown of Renfrew, Ontario.
