English mathematician and logician. In 1936 he described a 'universal computing machine' that could theoretically be programmed to solve any problem capable of solution by a specially designed machine. This concept, now called the Turing machine , foreshadowed the digital computer. Turing is believed to have been the first to suggest (in 1950) the possibility of machine learning and artificial intelligence. His test for distinguishing between real (human) and simulated (computer) thought is known as the Turing test : with a person in one room and the machine in another, an interrogator in a third room asks questions of both to try to identify them. When the interrogator cannot distinguish between them by questioning, the machine will have reached a state of humanlike intelligence. Turing was born in London and studied at Cambridge. During World War II he worked on the Ultra project in the team that cracked the German Enigma cipher code. After the war he worked briefly on the project to design the general computer known as the Automatic Computing Engine, or ACE, and was involved in the pioneering computer developed at Manchester University from 1948.

The Enigma Man and the Machine Alan Mathison Turing was by all accounts a genius. He was educated at King's College in Cambridge, followed by a Ph.D. in logic at Princeton. His contributions to society changed the course of World War II and pioneered the age of computers. He was also a "known homosexual".
Alan Turing the Mathematician
In 1936 Turing published one of this century's most significant mathematical papers "On Computable Numbers, with an Application to the Entscheidundsproblem (the problem of decidability)". It introduced the idea of a universal machine, now known as a "Turing Machine", that could execute a series of operations on sequences of binary digits.
Alan Turing the Intelligence Officer
In 1939, Turing joined the British government's Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park in Oxfordshire where he led the effort to crack the "Enigma Code". The Enigma machine was to used to decipher German radio messages during World War II. As a result, Allied convoys could avoid German U-boats for safe passage in the North Atlantic. Turing was admired by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. For his contributions to his country during the war, Turing was honored with the Order of the British Empire (OBE) recognition.
Alan Turing the Computer Pioneer
After the war Turing worked on the Automatic Computing Engine at the National Physical Laboratory. In 1948 Turing began work at Manchester University. He was the director of the MADAM (Manchester Automatic Digital Machine) project. Turing and Professor F.C. Williams developed the first successful prototype computer (later manufactured by Ferranti of Manchester, England). Alan Turing is regarded as the master mind behind the project.

Tugan-Baranovsky, Mikhail (1865-1919) Russian Marxist and follower of Bernstein . Later remained a socialist, but rejected Marxism . Wrote well-known works relating to the crisis of capitalism and Russian factories. Turati, Filippo (1857-1932) Leader of the right wing of the Socialist Party, he sustained a polity of openness and co-operation with the bourgeoisie. Edited, together with Anna Kuliscioff, the review Critica sociale [Social Criticism]. In 1896 he became deputy. In 1903 Giolitti offered him to join the government. Although he wished to accept this proposal, he was compelled to refuse because of the internal opposition inside the socialist party. After the end of the First World War, while the party was expressing itself in favour of a more strict and constant relation with the IC, Turati worked to regain the dialogue with Giolitti. In 1922 his reformist wing splits from the Socialist Party, giving birth to the Unitarian Socialist Party of Italy [Partito Socialista Unitario Italiano]. Turing, Alan (1912-1954)

Turing, Alan Mathison 1912-54, British mathematician and computer theorist. While studying at Cambridge Univ. he began work in predicate logic that lead to a proof (1937) that some mathematical problems are not susceptible to solution by automated computation. After completing a Ph.D. at Princeton Univ. (1938), he returned home to England, where, during World War II, he was instrumental in deciphering German messages encrypted by their Enigma cipher machine. After the war, he helped design computers, first for the British government (1945-48), and then for the Univ. of Manchester (1948-54). During this period, he produced a body of work that helped form the basis of the newly emerging field of artificial intelligence . He committed suicide shortly after being arrested for a homosexual offense. See biography by Andrew Hodge (1983).

Just because UofT now teaches Java in the first year, it doesn't mean you can forget about Turing. Alan Turing pretty much defined computers by defining a computing device that has come to bear his name. Your task is to write a (simplified) Turing machine simulator. A Turing machine is a state machine that reads and writes symbols on an external memory called a tape , using a device called a head . In this question, those symbols will be a subset of the decimal digits through 9, with digit 9 representing a blank. The tape is initialized to some non-empty string of digits, interpreted as the input to the machine. There are s +2 states in the machine. The s active states are numbered through s -1. State -1 is the accepting state; state -2 is the rejecting state. The ``program'' of the machine is stored in a table of triples indexed by an active state number and a symbol. If the triple stored for state q and symbol d is ( d m q '), then whenever the machine is in state

    Config.sys Commands For Your Keyboard
Whether you’re a power user or a neophyte in the computing world, you can use DOS commands to set up your computer just the way you want it. Many of the commands referred to as you learn about DOS are a little on the strange side and probably won’t be employed much by the average PC user. There are special cases, however, when you may want to fine-tune your computer’s behavior as much as possible through the Config.sys file.
Changing Config.sys NOTE: Before changing your Config.sys file, make a backup copy of it in case you run into problems and need to restore the original file. To change your Config.sys file, type edit config.sys in its place. The OK command at the bottom of the Open dialog box should be highlighted; press ENTER to accept it and open the Config.sys file. Use the arrow keys to move between lines in the file. (If you’re adding a line to the file instead of changing an existing line, use the Down arrow until you’re on the first empty line after the existing lines in the file and type in your new line.) Once you’ve made your changes, activate the menu bar by pressing ALT again. Choose Exit from the File menu; you’ll get a prompt asking whether you want to save the loaded file. The Yes option should be highlighted; press ENTER to accept this option and save....

    1954 - Alan Turing
Alan Turing was found dead at age 42. He had published his seminal paper, "On Computable Numbers," in 1936, as well as posing significant questions about judging "human intelligence" and programming and working on the design of several computers during the course of his career. A mathematical genius, Turing proved instrumental in code-breaking efforts during World War II. His application of logic to that realm would emerge even more significantly in his development of the concept of a "universal machine."

    Alan M. Turing (1912 - 1954)
Alan Mathison Turing was born on June 23rd 1912 in Paddington, London. He was educated at Sherborne School, and then went to King's College, Cambridge in 1931 to read Mathematics. Alan Turing was a brilliant original thinker. Formally a mathematician, in his lifetime he studied and wrote papers over a whole spectrum of subjects, from philosophy and psychology through to physics, chemistry and biology. He was probably at his happiest when he could combine high-level thinking with hands-on experience with machinery or experiments. In addition to his many other interests, for most of his postgraduate life he probably had a deeper understanding of computers and their potential in the future than anyone else. For the full story of Turing's life, visit the Turing Web Site , from which much of this description is derived.

Turing graduated from Cambridge in Mathematics in 1934, and was a fellow at Kings for two years, during which he wrote his now famous paper published in 1937 "

    ALAN TURING...
Alan Turing was a brilliant original thinker - the mathematician and logician who studied and wrote on a whole spectrum of subjects, from philosophy and psychology through to physics, chemistry and biology. The word repeatedly used is 'genius'. In the 1930's he conceived of a 'universal machine' which might carry out processes similar to thought processes using numbers, and suggested that such a machine should be called an electronic computer.
During Hitler's war, working at the Bletchley Park, his 'Bombe' device allowed German wartime codes to be cracked and laid the foundations for the first electronic machines. He probably had a deeper understanding of the digital world and its future potential than anyone else. In Manchester he contributed to building and programming the first all-electronic computer, and began the study of artificial intelligence.
