    32. TODLEBEN, COUNT
todhunter, isaac (18201884), English mathematician, son of George todhunter,a Nonconformist minister, was born at Rye on the 23rd of November 1820.

    TODLEBEN, COUNT
TODAS—TODLEBEN was promoted lieutenant-colonel in. 1826, and died in London on the I7th of November 1835. See obituary notices in the Proc. Land. Math. Soc. (1884), and Proc. Roy. Soc. (1884). TODI (anc. Tuder), a town and episcopal see of the province of Perugia, Italy, 28 m. S. of Perugia by road, on a steep hill above the east bank of the Tiber, 1348 ft. above sea-level, and 866 ft. above the river. Pop. (1901), 3599 (town), 16,528 (commune). Some portions of the ancient town walls—of two enceintes, an inner and an outer, the former attributed to the »riginal Umbrian inhabitants, the latter to the Romans—are preserved, and also remains of baths, amphitheatre, theatre, and a substruction wall of massive masonry, with four niches. Here was found the bronze statue of Mars, now in the Vatican, so that the building is sometimes erroneously called the temple of Mars. Beneath the cathedral square, at the highest point of the town, is a large reservoir. The Romanesque cathedral has a simple facade (partly of the nth, partly of the I4th and isth centuries), with a fine portal and rose window. In the same square is the massive Romanesque Gothic Palazzo Comunale of 1267, the Palazzo dei Priori and the Palazzo della Podesta. The Gothic church of S. Fortunato, with its nave and aisles of the same height, has a splendid portal; the upper part of the facade is unfinished. Both this church and the cathedral have good choir-stalls. Just outside the town on the west is the pilgrimage church of S. Maria della Consolazione, one of the finest buildings of the Renaissance, and often wrongly attributed to Bramante. Contemporary documents prove that the interior was begun in 1508 by Cola Matteuccio da Caprarola, and the exterior completed in 1516-1524 by Ambrogio da Milano and Francesco di Vito Lombardo; the slender dome was not added till 1606; its plan is a Greek cross. S. Fillippo in the town, a church of the early i6th century, betrays the influence of the Consolazione in details.

    I. L. PATTERSON I L Patterson was an American politician. He was a Republican governor of Oregon from 1927 until 1929. IAMBLICHUS Iamblichus was a neo-Platonic philosopher. He was a native of Chalcis in Coele-Syria, and spent his life in Syria , dieing sometime before 333. He was an ardent student of the philosophy of Plato and Pythagoras and was also versed in the lore of the Chaldaeans and Egyptians. His philosophy was a syncretism of Platonic and Pythagorean doctrines, mixed with Oriental mysticism, his cardinal thesis being that communion with the Deity was possible for man by means of theurgic rites, such as initiations and mysteries. IBAN Iban is a replacement term for Dyak. IBO The Ibo are a west African culture group occupying south east Nigeria and numbering about 18,000,000. Primarily cultivators, they inhabit the richly forested tableland, bounded by the river Niger to the west and the river Cross to the east. They are divided into five main groups, and their languages belong to the Kwa branch of the Niger-Congo family.

Cell and tissue, shell and bone, leaf and flower, are so many portions of matter, and it is in obedience to the laws of physics that their particles have been moved, moulded and conformed. They are no exceptions to the rule that God always geometrizes. Their problems of form are in the first instance mathematical problems, their problems of growth are essentially physical problems, and the morphologist is, ipso facto , a student of physical science.

    Fourier is a mathematical poem.
    Thoreau
He is not a true man of science who does not bring some sympathy to his studies, and expect to learn something by behavior as well as by application. It is childish to rest in the discovery of mere coincidences, or of partial and extraneous laws. The study of geometry is a petty and idle exercise of the mind, if it is applied to no larger system than the starry one. Mathematics should be mixed not only with physics but with ethics; that is mixed mathematics. The fact which interests us most is the life of the naturalist. The purest science is still biographical.

Last revision: Feb. 24, 2003 BANACH SPACE. According to an Internet post, Banach wrote (in French) "spaces of type (B)". It has been suggested that he may have thus invited the subsequent term Banach space. The term Banach space Banach space is found in National Mathematics Magazine in November 1945 in the title "Integrations of Functions in a Banach Space" by M. S. Macphail. BANACH-TARSKI is found in Waclaw Sierpinski, "Sur le paradoxe de MM. Banach et Tarski," Fundamenta Mathematicae 33, pp 229-234 (1945) [James A. Landau]. BAR CHART occurs in Nov. 1914 in W. C. Brinton, "Graphic Methods for Presenting Data. IV. Time Charts," Engineering Magazine, 48, 229-241 (David, 1998). The form of diagram, however, is much older; there is an example from William Playfair's Commercial and Political Atlas of 1786 at http://www.york.ac.uk/depts/maths/histstat/playfair.gif BAR GRAPH is dated 1924 in MWCD10. Bar graph is found in 1925 in Statistics by B. F. Young: "Bar-graphs in the form of progress charts are used to represent a changing condition such as the output of a factory" (OED2). The term BARYCENTRIC CALCULUS appears in 1827 in the title Der barycentrische calkul BASE (of a geometric figure) appears in English in 1570 in Sir Henry Billingsley's translation of Euclid's Elements BASE (in an isosceles triangle) is found in English in 1571 in Digges
