I think mathematics is a vast territory. The outskirts of mathematics are the outskirts of mathematical civilization. There are certain subjects that people learn about and gather together. Then there is a sort of inevitable development in those fields. You get to the point where a certain theorem is bound to be proved, independent of any particular individual, because it is just in the path of development.

Amherst College Coach Bill Thurston has been at Amherst College for 34 years and has won 70% of all games played (611 won 296 lost) as of this writing.
Since 1990, he has served as pitching consultant for the American Sports Medicine Institute and since 1985, as the NCAA Baseball Rules Editor. He is a nationally known clinic speaker, and many of his instructional materials have been published and videotaped.
His video, COMMON MECHANICAL PITCHING FAULTS is available at baseballtips.com for only $39.95 and is a must - own! "FLYING OPEN"

Flying open early during the stride and cocking phase is a common fault experienced by all pitchers no matter of age or experience. Young high school and college pitchers have to learn HOW to stay closed, and experienced pitchers must FOCUS on staying closed until
the stride foot plants.

Bill Thurston studied at New College, Sarasota, Florida. He received his B.S. from there in 1967 and moved to the University of California at Berkeley to undertake research under Morris Hirsch's and Stephen Smale 's supervision. He was awarded his doctorate in 1972 for a thesis entitled Foliations of 3- manifolds which are circle bundles. This work showed the existence of compact leaves in foliations of 3-dimensional manifolds. After completing his Ph.D., Thurston spent the academic year 1972-73 at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. Then, in 1973, he was appointed an assistant professor of mathematics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1974 he was appointed professor of mathematics at Princeton University. Throughout this period Thurston worked on foliations. Lawson ([5]) sums up this work:- It is evident that Thurston's contributions to the field of foliations are of considerable depth. However, what sets them apart is their marvellous originality. This is also true of his subsequent work on

Head Coach Bill Thurston
Bill Thurston , head coach of the Amherst College baseball program since 1966 and the winningest coach in any sport in school history, has led the Jeffs to a staggering 667 wins (against just 389 losses, nine ties) over the last 37 seasons - nearly 70% of all contests played entering the 2003 season. His teams have posted 15 consecutive winning seasons and cracked the 20-win plateau 15 times, including a streak of four straight 20-win seasons from 1988 to 1991, and a string of four-out-of-five 20-win years from 1997 to 2001. Thurston is widely respected as a teacher of baseball skills and techniques as well as an outstanding game-coach and manager.
As the No. 1 pitcher and leading hitter as an outfielder at the University of Michigan, Thurston signed a professional contract with the Detroit Tigers organization after his junior year and played three seasons of professional baseball. He began his coaching career in Dearborn, Michigan before coming to Amherst in the fall of 1965. At Amherst, Thurston is a full-time, tenured professor of physical education.
Thurston has been named New England College Coach of the Year on four occasions: in 1974, 1980, 1984, and 1997. In 1982, he was the recipient of the prestigious Jack Butterfield Award for coaching excellence and contributions to the game. In July 1996, he was inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame, and in January 1997, he was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Also in 1997, Thurston received the Dr. James R. Andrews Award for his research and contributions in Sports Medicine.

I will discuss progress in understanding the geometry of foliations, particularly in dimension 3, in connection with the program of trying to reconcile and combine several approaches toward three-dimensional topology. A main goal of the program is to find a construction for a geometric decomposition for a 3-manifold based on a taut foliation, an essential lamination, or a tight contact structure. An important related goal is to analyze how these structures relate to a hyperbolic structure. More specifically, I will touch on the following points, discussing some of this in depth. Some of this is quite new, and subject to change before the talk.
  • The pocket principal. By looking at diffusion along the leaves of a foliation (and/or symmetric random walks on groups or pseudo-groups of homeomorphisms), one finds that nearby leaves of a codimension-one foliation mostly converge at infinity, in a sense that can be made precise. A good image is that nearby leaves in the universal cover form pockets, with openings that are small compared to the seams that join them.
  • The geodesic flow of leaves. It is known that foliations with 2-dimensional leaves, under reasonable general circumstances, have Riemannian metrics which are negatively-curved on each leaf. The pocket principal gives a way to compare geodesic flows on different leaves.

In the 1884 novel Flatland , a square living on a plane bemoans his two-dimensional life. "Life is somewhat dull in Flatland," he writes. "How can it be otherwise, when all one’s prospect, all one’s landscapes, historical pieces, portraits, flowers, still life, are nothing but a single line?" The Flatlander knows what he is missing because he has just been carried by a teacher into Spaceland, the third dimension. At UC Davis, mathematics professor William Thurston takes his students on a similar trip, into the world of multidimensional thinking. But while the square was impoverished by his new awareness, Thurston’s students are enriched. After a few classes of "Geometry and the Imagination," objects as mundane as apple peels or bathroom tiles and as exotic as the expanding universe all assume new character and complexity. "I just thought this class was going to be on geometry and shapes," said junior Heather Witt, a chemistry major. "I had no idea how much it would apply to everyday things. I’ve never looked at vegetables, for instance, and thought they were mathematically related. And they are."

Professor William P. Thurston has contributed broadly to geometry and topology with applications to many related areas of mathematics; two of his research endeavors merit special attention. In his work on foliations , Professor Thurston settled long-standing questions on the existence of foliations of different manifolds . In his independent work on the geometry and topology of 3-manifolds he revived hyperbolic geometry as an active area of research. One of the most interesting kinds of structures on a manifold is a foliation, because it can be viewed as part of differential geometry , or pure topology, or dynamical systems . Almost every manifold which admits at least one foliation has many of them, yet not so many that foliations are easy to construct. For example, if a manifold has a smooth codimension 1 foliation, then in particular there is a tangent hyperplane field , and such a hyperplane field exists if and only if the Euler characteristic of the manifold vanishes. But most plane fields are not tangent to any foliation; they are not
