Mammalian Immunogenetics Research Group
The Mammalian Immunogenetics Research Group (MIRG) consists of research workers from the University of Liverpool Veterinary Faculty and the University of Manchester Medical School. This group is concerned with animal welfare and the genetic basis of spontaneously occurring diseases in dogs horses and cats. We are particularly interested in understanding the genetic basis of autoimmune conditions and the susceptibility to common infections. The Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) consists of a number of tightly linked genes, which are critical in immune regulation and immune response. These genes are also highly polymorphic, and have been shown to be associated with autoimmune diseases in other animal species.
Current work is focussed on the identification of the multiple alleles at each of several class II loci in the target species. It is essential to have a consistent and universal nomenclature for these alleles, and to facilitate this, a Canine MHC Nomenclature Committee has been established under the auspices of the International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG). This committee will review all nucleotide sequences as they are produced and assign appropriate allele names.

William Thomson 's father, James Thomson, had originally intended to become a minister of the Presbyterian Church but had opted for an academic career as a mathematician. William's mother died when he was six years old and from that time he was brought up by his father. James Thomson was the professor of engineering in Belfast at the time of William's birth and, when William was eight years old, his father James was appointed to the chair of mathematics at the University of Glasgow. James Thomson was a dominant father who brought his family up in a strict Presbyterian fashion. William's sister wrote of this childhood [3]:- Our father read to us regularly every Sunday morning some chapters in the Old Testament, and in the evening some in the New. However, despite his father being very strict he had a very close relationship with William. It was from his father that William learn mathematics and at a very young age he became an accomplished mathematician with knowledge of the latest developments in the subject.

One aspect of photography that I feel everyone should at least try, is to develop and print your own Black and White film. it isn't as complicated as most people think, and needn't be particularly expensive. In fact, once the initial outlay has been made for the equipment, you can develop and print a film for pennies, compared with up to £10 or £12 from a mini-lab. There are various kits available from suppliers with everything you need, or alternatively, you could hire a fully equipped darkroom from a local college, school or camera club.
here
need the following:-
  • Developing Tank Thermometer Timing Device Measuring Jugs Developer Stop-Bath Fixer Running Water
It would also make life easier if you had the following, although they are not essential...
  • Changing Bag Scissors Wetting Agent
The first thing to do is to get the film out of the canister, and onto the reel inside the developing tank. This must be done in complete darkness, so a changing bag is ideal, although it is not uncommon for someone to put the lights out, close the curtains, and attach the film under the duvet in their bedroom! Attaching the film to the reel requires a little practise, so it's a good idea to try it a few times with a spare film, till you get the hang of it. The technique involves threading the end of the film onto the reel at the large lugs, and feeding the rest of the film into the spiral by short twisting movements until the end of the film is reached. Cut the canister off with the scissors, or simply tear it off. Now put the reel onto the centre column of the developing tank, put the lid back on, making sure it is tight, and on the right thread, and finally make sure that the slip-on lid is in place as well.

Virgil Thomson (1896 - 1989)
updated 3 May 1999
Virgil Thomson, whose centennial we celebrate in 1996, was a many faceted American composer of great originality and a music critic of singular brilliance. Born in Kansas City, Missouri on 25 November 1896, Thomson studied at Harvard. After a prolonged period in Paris where he studied with Nadia Boulanger and met Cocteau, Stravinsky, Satie, and the artists of Les Six, he returned to the United States where he was chief music critic for the New York Herald Tribune. Virgil Thomson composed in almost every genre of music. Utilizing a musical style marked by sharp wit and overt playfulness, Thomson produced a highly original body of work rooted in American speech rhythms and hymnbook harmony. His music was most influenced by Satie's ideals of clarity, simplicity, irony, and humor. Among his most famous works are the operas Four Saints in Three Acts and The Mother of Us All (both with texts by Gertrude Stein with whom he formed a legendary artistic collaboration), scores to The Plow That Broke the Plains and The River (films by Pare Lorentz), and Louisiana Story (film by Robert Flaherty). In addition to his compositions, he was the author of eight books, including an autobiography. Included in his many honors and awards are the Pulitzer Prize, a Brandeis Award, the gold medal for music from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, the National Book Circle Award, the Kennedy Center Honors, the National Music Council Award, and 20 honorary doctorates.
