Rene Thom's influence on Topology
In 1958, Rene Thom received the Fields medal for his work on Cobordism Theory . This theory influenced most of the exciting developments in Topology during the following decades. At the heart of this influence lies the fact that cobordisms can be used to translate geometric problems into homotopy theory, and then further into algebra. Thom died on October 25, 2002.
This course first introduces all the basic notions related to cobordism, and then surveys some of the most interesting applications that were discovered over the years. Particular topics include:
  • Cobordisms as a homology theory
  • Thom spaces, Pontrjagin-Thom construction, Thom isomorphism
  • Characteristic classes and characteristic numbers
  • Quillen-Sullivan's Rational Homotopy Theory
  • Hirzebruch's Signature Theorem

Prerequisites
A first (one quarter) course in topology, like 290A, will be assumed.
Class starts Monday, January 6, 2003 at 3:00 in APM 7218.

A QUICK LOOK AT RENE THOM THROUGH MY EYES AS INFLUENCED BY ROSEN AND OTHERS Don Mikulecky In “Essays on Life Itself” Robert Rosen devotes an entire chapter to Thom’s work. The subheadings in that chapter span the contributions of Thom which Rosen sees as going beyond the classification theorem which stands on its own. On Theory In Biology This is a snapshot of the history of the rift between empiricists and theoreticians and the idea that only through experiment can one learn. M The conclusion of this section says “on the other hand, there is only one reason to do either science or mathematics, and that is to understand what is going on.” It seems then that we might best ask what Thom did to increase our understanding. On Information. Here he explains that he uses information in a semantic sense, not the sense that Shannon did which was purely syntactic. Thus, here information is found in answers to “why?”. That of course Rosen answers with Aristotelian causes. He then identifies Thom’s contribution of the notion of genericity with the notion of surrogacy which is how he deals with the artificial lifers and intelligencers. The bottom line is the recognition of a necessary semantic component to objectivity.

Fields Medal
Historical Introduction
This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.

From Structural Stability and Morphogenesis , by Rene Thom (1975, translated from French) “Information in Biology” I [would like to discuss] the abuse of the word “information” in biology; it is to be feared that biologists have attributed an unjustified importance to the mathematical theory of information. This theory treats only an essentially technical problem: how to transmit a given message in an optimal manner from the source to a receiver by a channel of given characteristics. The biological problem is much more difficult: how to understand the message coded in a chain of four letters of DNA (the usual description of which, it seems to me, needs some improvement). Now, all information is first a form , and the meaning of a message and the eigenforms of the receptor (the forms that can provoke an excitation of the receptor); to reduce the information to its scalar measure (evaluated in bits) is to reduce the form to its topological complexity, and to throw away almost all of its significance. For example, it is too simple to say that oogenesis is an operation of transmitting information from a parent to its descendents, for the transmitting channel (the egg) and the receptor (the embryo emerging from the egg) are identical.

Animals and the Symbolic Mode
The question of whether animals employe the symbolic mode of sigining, or even whether animals are properly thought to engage in semiosis at all, is an interesting and controversial one. Opinions range from those like Umberto Eco's, who feel that semiosis is a human phenomena, to Thomas Sebeok's and Rene Thom's, both of whom contend that semiosis is engaged in even at the cellular level, and that animals employ all three of Peirce's signing modes (iconic, indexical, and symbolic). A key to Peirce's original trichotomy was his phenomenological division of consciousness into Firstness Secondness , and Thirdness . Firstness describes the directness of qualities, which require neither interpretation to possess their chief attribute, nor any object to actually have the quality in question. A picture of a cat (an icon) possesses it iconic potentiality whether or not anyone is there to interpret it as such, and whether or not there are any cats in existence. Indices exhibit Secondness. For something to function as an index, there must be an actual thing it indexes! One could not say that a footprint is an index of a cat that never passed where the footprint is located. It may be an icon of a cat's print drawn by a mud artist, or a symbol of a cat made by a cat cult, but it is not an index of a cat. It is interesting to note, however, that if the print is well executed, we may mistake it for an index. Symbols partake of Thirdness. The word /cat/ does not picture or resemble a cat; neither does it indicate any particular cat. Rather, it is the symbol for a law, in this case, one that divides the world into cat and non-cat objects, and describes the properties that make something a cat. For something to function as a symbol, the sign and its (actual or potential) object(s) must be associated by an idea (an
