Thales of Miletus
Pythagoras when reporting the demise of the Milesian astronomer. Thales had climbed a hill in the company of a Thracian handmaid, and while looking at the stars, tumbled off a cliff into the sea. The girl reported that he was so eager to know what was going on in the heavens, he could not see what was before his own two feet. The earthy herbalist Gerard Thales of Miletus lived from about 624 to about 546 BC. He was one of the Seven Sages of antiquity and reputed by Aristotle to be the first of the Greek philosophers. He predicted an eclipse of the sun in 585 BC, using the methods of the Egyptians and the Chaldeans. The eclipse occured during a battle between the Lydians and the Medians. Thales may also have diverted a river to allow the passage of King Croesus. Related links Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy: Thales of Miletus Pre-Socratic Philosophy: Thales

Thales of Miletus
fl. 6th century BC Philosopher remembered for his cosmology based on water as the essence of all matter. According to the Greek thinker Apollodorus, he was born in 624; the Greek historian Diogenes Laertius placed his death in the 58th Olympiad (548-545) at the age of 78. No writings by Thales survive, and no contemporary sources exist; thus, his achievements are difficult to assess. Inclusion of his name in the canon of the legendary Seven Wise Men led to his idealization, and numerous acts and sayings, many of them no doubt spurious, were attributed to him. According to Herodotus In geometry Thales has been credited with the discovery of five theorems:
  • (1) that a circle is bisected by its diameter, (2) that angles at the base of a triangle having two sides of equal length are equal, (3) that opposite angles of intersecting straight lines are equal, (4) that the angle inscribed in a semicircle is a right angle, and (5) that a triangle is determined if its base and the angles relative to the base are given.
His mathematical achievements are difficult to assess, however, because of the ancient practice of crediting particular discoveries to men with a general reputation for wisdom.

Thales of Miletus
Thales of Miletus lived from 634 B.C. to 548 B.C. In his youth, he travelled extensively. He likely visited Egypt and Babylon, two ancient civilisations which were still in existence. Later on, he founded the Ionian School, the first of its kind in Greece. Among others, Pythagoras would attend this famous school. We have some ideas about Thales' deeds, but we cannot be sure that everything written about him is true. It was reported that he predicted a solar eclipse in Greece in 585 B.C., but this may not have been possible because of the primitive state of astronomy in Greece at the time. It was also said that he made his fortune by buying all of the olive presses in Miletus and nearby Chios (see map at Antiquity Online ), and at harvest time he rented out the olive presses at a high profit, thus making his fortune. The later Greeks named Thales as the first of the seven wise men of Greece. He is the first person to have specific mathematical discoveries credited to him. These discoveries were:
  • The diameter of a circle divides that circle into two parts of equal area.

Attractive properties of Amber
Thales of Miletus (640-546 BC), a Greek philospher, is believed to be the first person to have observed the attractive properties of amber. (His teachings were passed down orally until Aristotle wrote them down.) He observed that when rubbed amber could pick up light objects. We now know that this was due to static electricity, but for many centuries this was considered an interesting "magic" property of amber. Thales of Miletus
This webpage will be devoted to Thales of Miletus, a Greek Mathematician of ancient times.
Thales of Miletus was born in Miletus, Asia Minor (now Turkey), around the year of 624 B.C. He lived in Miletus all of his life. It is believed he died at age 77, in 547 B.C. (He also died in Miletus.) There is no information available about his parents, childhood, and family. It is known that he went to Miletus. It is difficult to give credit to Thales for all of his discoveries and achievements because his work wasn't written down. That is also why we do not know much about his life. It wasn't until hundreds of years later that Greek philosophers started recording his work. Even though we know little about his life, we do have two theories about how he died. The first theory is that he fell off of a cliff while stargazing, and died. The second is that he died of heat exhaustion while watching a gymnastics competition.
Thales' real occupation was an engineer, but he was famous in the fields of mathematics, philosophy, history, astronomy, science, geography, and even politics. Two of his astronomy achievements were discovering the constellation Ursa Minor, and predicting solar eclipses. As a politician, Thales persuaded the separate states of Ionia to form a federation. Thales was a genius, and is titled one of the Greek Seven Sages.
Thales made many contributions to the field of mathematics. He is known best for his mathematical work in measurement and geometry. His greatest math achievements include these five theorems:

Thales of Miletus (ca. 624 - 547 BC)
Thales of Miletus was the son of Examyes and Cleobuline.Thales seems to be the first known Greek philosopher, scientist and mathematician although his occupation was that of an engineer. He is believed to have been the teacher of Anaximander (611 BC - 545 BC) and he was the first natural philosopher in the Milesian School. However, none of his writing survives so it is difficult to determine his views or to be certain about his mathematical discoveries. Indeed it is unclear whether he wrote any works at all and if he did they were certainly lost by the time of Aristotle who did not have access to any writings of Thales. Certainly Thales was a figure of enormous prestige, being the only philosopher before Socrates to be among the Seven Sages. It is reported that Thales predicted an eclipse of the Sun in 585 BC. The cycle of about 19 years for eclipses of the Moon was well known at this time but the cycle for eclipses of the Sun was harder to spot since eclipses were visible at different places on Earth. Thales's prediction of the 585 BC eclipse was probably a guess based on the knowledge that an eclipse around that time was possible. Thales believed that the Earth floats on water and all things come to be from water. For him the Earth was a flat disc floating on an infinite ocean. It has also been claimed that Thales explained earthquakes from the fact that the Earth floats on water. Again the importance of Thales' idea is that he is the first recorded person who tried to explain such phenomena by rational rather than by supernatural means. In many textbooks on the history of mathematics Thales is credited with five theorems of elementary geometry:

Thales of Miletus
Back to the Index Life Cosmology Element Theory and Its Predecessors ... Legends of Thales Thales was the founder of Hellenic philosophy, and was regarded as one of the Seven Wise Men of Greece: he was a cosmologist, originator of science and possibly was an originator of geometry in Hellas. Herodotus tells the story that Thales was a Phoenician by descent. He was supposedly skilful in politics, economics, engineering, geography, astronomy and mathematics: the latter possibly arose from his understanding of Egyptian surveying methods, and Eudemus the Peripatetic reports that he introduced geometry to Hellas. He left no writings, but an account of his beliefs is given in Aristotle's Metaphysics A.3. Most important about the things mentioned above is that Thales attempted to provide natural explanations of earthly phenomena, rather than mythological explanations which were common to his predecessors. Life Back to the Top 624? Born in Miletus to Examyes, a Carian 585 Thales had predicted an eclipse that occurred at the battle of the Halys of the Lydians (under Alyattes ) against the Medians. At some point in the expedition, Thales is reputed to have diverted the course of a river to allow the Lydians to cross. 560 Croesus to power, drawing many intellectuals to his court

Wonder how such thought processes has brought such ingenuity to the forefront of strings, and we would have been discussing the interactions of such strings? Thales of Miletus.
Dr. Wilson
One time, an enemy warship dropped anchor off the coast of Miletus. Since it would have proved impracticable to take a chain out to the ship to measure how far off the shore it was, Thales came up with the following ingenious plan to determine how far off the coast the ship was anchored. He first laid out a line down the beach from A to B. He measured the angle which the line from A to the ship at S made with the line from A to B, and measured off the same angle going inland. He did the same thing at point B. He found the point C where these two lines met. At the point C, he sighted on the ship and found the point D where the line from C to the ship met the line from A to B. Since C was inland, he could measure the distance from C back to the line at D. Prove that D is the closest point from the ship to the line AB, and that the distance from D to the ship is the same as the distance from C to D. Given:
  • angle BAC = angle BAS
  • angle ABC = angle ABS
To prove:
  • CD = DS
  • AB is perpendicular to CS
