The conference showcased the research of outstanding women in mathematics and highlighted various issues of concern to young women entering the mathematical research communty. The career of Olga Taussky Todd (1906-1995) served as a worthy model for the participants... Though Taussky's main interest was initially number theory, she was to become what she later termed "a torchbearer" for another branch of mathematics known as matrix theory. Kurt Gödel
Born: 28 April 1906 in Brünn, Austria-Hungary (now Brno, Czech Republic) Died: 14 Jan 1978 in Princeton, New Jersey, USA Kurt Gödel attended school in Brünn, completing his school studies in 1923. His brother Rudolf Gödel said:- Even in High School my brother was somewhat more one-sided than me and to the astonishment of his teachers and fellow pupils had mastered university mathematics by his final Gymnasium years. ... Mathematics and languages ranked well above literature and history. At the time it was rumoured that in the whole of his time at High School not only was his work in Latin always given the top marks but that he had made not a single grammatical error. Kurt entered the University of Vienna in 1923. He was taught by Furtwängler, Hahn, Wirtinger, Menger, Helly and others. As an undergraduate he took part in a seminar run by Schlick which studied Russell's book Introduction to mathematical philosophy. Olga Tausky-Todd, a fellow student of Gödel's, wrote:- It became slowly obvious that he would stick with logic, that he was to be Hahn's student and not Schlick's, that he was incredibly talented. His help was much in demand.

Professor
Robert C. Thompson, a professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of California at Santa Barbara, died on December 10, 1995, while waiting for a heart transplant. He was 64. An international authority on linear algebra and matrix theory, Thompson was one of the founders of ILAS (the International Linear Algebra Society) and of the journal Linear and Multilinear Algebra . He was a contributing editor of Linear Algebra and its Applications and an editor of SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis Thompson was born on April 21, 1931, in Winnipeg, Manitoba; he grew up near Vancouver, British Columbia, and received bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of British Columbia. In 1960, he received his Ph.D. from Caltech, where he was Olga Taussky Todd's first official student. After returning to UBC for three years as a faculty member, he moved to the University of California at Santa Barbara, where he spent the remainder of his career. At Santa Barbara, he began a long-term professional relationship with Marvin Marcus that included collaborative research and the founding of the Institute for the Interdisciplinary Application of Algebra and Combinatorics. With the arrival of other prominent colleagues, including Ky Fan, Eugene Johnsen, Henryk Minc, and later, Morris Newman, Santa Barbara was for several years a mecca for researchers in matrix theory.
