Olga Taussky-Todd
Olga Taussky-Todd was a distinguishable and prolific mathematician who wrote about300 papers. Throughout her life she received many honors and distinctions, most notably the Cross of Honor, the highest recognition of contributions given by her native Austria. Her best-known work was in the field of matrix theory, though she also made important contributions to the number theory.

Andrew Odlyzko: Correspondence about the origins of the Hilbert-Polya Conjecture
  • The Hilbert-Polya Conjecture says that the Riemann Hypothesis is true because non-trivial zeros of the zeta function correspond (in a certain canonical way) to the eigenvalues of some positive operator. This conjecture is often regarded as the most promising way to prove the Riemann Hypothesis. Very little is known about its origins. Mathematical folk wisdom has usually attributed its formulation to Hilbert and Polya, independently, some time in the 1910s. However, there appears to be no published mention of it before Hugh Montgomery's 1973 paper on the pair correlation of zeros of the zeta function. Enclosed here are copies of some letters that attempted to trace the history of the Hilbert-Polya Conjecture. The first letter from Polya appears to present the only documented evidence about the origins of the conjecture.
  • Correspondence with George Polya: The two letters by Polya (1887-1985) were written when he was 94. According to N. G. de Bruijn, at that stage in his life, Polya usually dictated letters to his wife, and only signed them himself. The fact that he wrote both letters out in his own handwriting suggests he was very interested in the subject. The account of the formulation of the conjecture in the first letter is consistent with what Polya had told Dennis Hejhal in a personal conversation.

Olga Taussky-Todd was a distinguished and prolific mathematician who wrote about 300 papers. Taussky-Todd’s Advisor: Philipp Furtwängler Ph.D. Universität Göttingen
Furtwängler ’s Advisor: C. Felix (Christian) Klein Ph.D. Universität Bonn
Felix Klein is best known for his work in non- euclidean geometry, for his work on the connections between geometry and group theory, and for results in function theory. However Klein considered his work in function theory to be the summit of his work in mathematics. He owed some of his greatest successes to his development of Riemann's ideas and to the intimate alliance he forged between the later and the conception of invariant theory, of number theory and algebra, of group theory, and of multidimensional geometry and the theory of differential equations, especially in his own fields, elliptic modular functions and automorphic functions. Klein’s Advisor 1: Julius Plücker Ph.D.

ILAS - The International Linear Algebra Society - was founded in 1989 as the successor to the International Matrix Group which was established in 1987. The general goal of ILAS is to encourage activities in linear algebra. ILAS aims to encourage and support existing groups and individuals active in organizing meetings and publications in all aspects of linear algebra. We have no intention of supplanting or competing with existing organizations, our entire purpose is international co-ordination, to assist the development of linear algebra. We may add new activities where and when desirable. We welcome activities in all applications of linear algebra and we desire a proper share for theoretical matrix analysis and abstract linear algebra. ILAS initiates, encourages and co-ordinates linear algebra meetings, and supports them by the means available, such as information delivery. ILAS Inaugural Meeting took place in Provo, Utah, USA, on August 12-15, 1989. You can check for the list of all ILAS Conferences ILAS' Education Committee handles undergraduate and graduate Linear Algebra studies. Among others, it operates a joint NSF- ILAS Project to Augment the Teaching Linear Algebra through the use of Software Tools (ATLAST). The project has offered several workshops in various places.

The panel is being organized by women from the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM), the European Women in Mathematics (EWM) and the Committee on Women and Mathematics of the European Mathematical Society, represented by a committee consisting of Bhama Srinivasan (chair; Chicago, USA), Bettye Anne Case (Tallahassee, USA), and Christine Bessenrodt (Magdeburg, Germany). The organizers have received planning advice from women in several additional countries. They envision that each speaker will talk about how certain events or policies in her country have affected women in mathematics. at 21:15: A film entitled "Women and mathematics across cultures" will be shown which briefly introduces EWM, shows some statistics, and allows four woman mathematicians to share their personal experiences about the impact of cultural differences on the status of women in the profession. The film was directed by Marjatta Naatanen (Helsinki, Finland).

Olga, Matrix theory and the Taussky Unification Problem
    Dr. Shaun Fallat
    Abstract:
I never had the chance to meet Olga Taussky-Todd, but I am familiar with some of her contributions to matrix theory. My purpose in this talk is to take a trip down memory lane and discuss some of Olga's contributions to this vast subject. I intend to briefly discuss two of her favourite topics (Gersogorin's disc theorem and Lyapunov's stability theorem), and then move onto my primary subject, the so-called "Taussky Unification Problem.'' I will state the problem, its motivation, and close with some recent work on this very important problem.
