INTERVIEW/Takakazu Kuriyama: U.S. doesn't need U.N. approval to attack Iraq
The Asahi Shimbun Takakazu Kuriyama, former ambassador to Washington, says Japan should support U.S. military action against Iraq even if the United Nations Security Council does not authorize it. In an interview with The Asahi Shimbun, Kuriyama challenged as dangerous what he perceived as the assumption by many Japanese that nothing could be done about countries like Iraq without the council's approval. He pointed out that the Security Council was not a body that could dispense justice. Excerpts follow: Q: How do you see the rift on Iraq between the United States and Britain on the one hand and France, Germany and Russia on the other?

Do you know of any resources that I can use to find information on my topic? I looked in the archives and found an article about Kumon math, but I would like to have more information on the general subject of Japanese mathematics. Can you offer any suggestions or ideas? I'm not really sure what you want to know about Japanese mathematics. If you want to know about modern teaching trends there, the article you already found is a great starting point and has numerous references itself which must be in turn cross-referenced themselves. Function Field Modular Forms and Higher Derivations, by Yukiko Uchino, Takakazu Satoh
This paper has now appeared in Math. Ann. Vol.311, pp. 439-466 (1998) and so the dvi version has been removed. From the abstract: In the study of modular forms, Jacobi forms, etc. over the complex numbers, differential operators occasionally play an important role. For function field modular forms whose values lie in a positive characteristic field, differential is not a powerful tool. For example, locally analytic functions are annihilated by $p$-times differential, where $p$ is the characteristic. Instead, we use a continuous higher derivation. As an application, we construct the Cohen bracket for function field modular forms. We also study a function field analogue of two variable functions which behave like a Jacobi form only under the action of modular group.

The Canonical Lift of an Ordinary Elliptic Curve over a Finite Field and its Point Counting, by Takakazu Satoh
Preprint #0223 is an updated version of this preprint. We develop a probabilistic algorithm for the point counting of an elliptic curve E defined over the finite field with p N elements provided that p is small enough and that j E ) does not belong to the finite field with p elements. For simplicity, we are concerned to the case p O N log p ). Our algorithm is O N ) where O -constant depends (badly) on p . Our idea is totally different from SEA algorithm. We lift E to its canonical lift and compute the trace of Verschiebung (i.e. the dual of the Frobenius morphism) directly from characteristic zero information.
