Administrative/Biographical History
Peter Guthrie Tait was born in Dalkeith on 28 April 1831. He was educated at Dalkeith Grammar School and Edinburgh Academy, and then studied at Edinburgh University and at Peterhouse, Cambridge, where he graduated BA in 1852 and became a Fellow the same year. He was appointed Professor of Mathematics at Queen's College, Belfast, 1854, and held the post there until 1860 when he became Professor of Natural Philosophy at Edinburgh University. Tait became acquainted with Lord Kelvin (1824-1907) around this time and they both worked on the Treatise on natural philosophy (1867). His other publications include

Administrative/Biographical History
A scientist and inventor, Lord Kelvin was born in Belfast, Ireland, in 1824, the second son of James Thomson (1786-1849) a professor of Mathematics in the Royal Institution there. The family moved to Glasgow, Scotland, in 1832. He matriculated at the university of Glasgow in 1834 and went on to Peterhouse, Cambridge where he helped to found Cambridge University Musical Society.

TAIT, PETER G.
TAIT, A, F.—TAIT, P. G. Tait was a Churchman by conviction; but although the work of his life was all done in England, he remained a Scotsman to the end. It was the opinion of some that he never really understood the historical position of the English Church and took no pains to learn. John Tillotson, one of his predecessors in the archbishopric, was a favourite hero of his, and in some ways the two men resembled one another. But Tait had none of Tillotson's gentleness, and he rode roughshod over the obstacles in his way. He cannot be called a great ecclesiastical statesman, but he administered his office well and was undoubtedly one of the foremost public men of his day. See R. T. Davidson and D. Benham, Life of Archbishop Tait, 2 vols. (1891); A. C. Tait, Catharine and Craufurd Tait (1880). (W. E. Co.) TAIT, ARTHUR FITZWILLIAM (1819-1905), American artist, was born pear Liverpool, England, on the 5th of August 1819. He emigrated to the United States in 1850, and was identified with the art life of New York until his death. In 1858 he was elected to full membership in the National Academy of Design, New York. He died at Yonkers, New York, on the 28th of April 1905. He painted barnyard fowls and wild birds as well as sheep and deer, with great dexterity, and reproductions of his minute panels of chickens had an enormous vogue. TAJIK—TAKLA MAKAN together with an admirably lucid volume of popular lectures on Recent Advances in Physical Science. With Lord Kelvin he collaborated in writing the well-known Treatise on Natural Philosophy. " Thomson and Tail," as it is familiarly called (" T and T'" was the authors' own formula), was planned soon after Lord Kelvin became acquainted with Tait, on the latter's appointment to his professorship in Edinburgh, and it was intended to be an all-comprehensive treatise on physical science, the foundations being laid in kinematics and dynamics, and the structure completed with the properties of matter, heat, light, electricity and magnetism. But the literary partnership ceased in about eighteen years, when only the first portion of the plan had been completed, because each of the members felt he could work to better advantage separately than jointly. The friendship, however, endured for the twenty-three years which yet remained of Tail's life.

The Life and Work of Sir William Rowan Hamilton:
Some Nineteenth Century Perspectives
About this Collection
This collection contains most of the biographical sketches, obituaries and essays on the life and work of Sir William Rowan Hamilton published in the nineteenth century. The authors are Robert and Charles Graves, Peter Guthrie Tait, Augustus De Morgan, Sir Robert Stawell Ball, Charles Pritchard, Clement Mansfield Ingleby and John Francis Waller. Most of the articles in this collection were published before the appearance of the Life of Sir William Rowan Hamilton by Robert Perceval Graves (Dublin: Hodges, Figgis and Co., 1882, 1885 and 1889), a massive three-volume biography of Hamilton, which includes a very considerable quantity of Hamilton's general correspondence and his poetry. Consequently there are factual inaccuracies in some of the earlier biographical sketches and obituaries included in this collection. In this collection, the most thorough account of Hamilton's mathematical work is to be found in the essay by Peter Guthrie Tait published in the North British Review . A substantial and accurate survey of Hamilton's life is provided by the chapter on Hamilton in Great Astronomers by Sir Robert S. Ball

Note on `Sir William Rowan Hamilton' by Peter Guthrie Tait:
The Ancestry of Hamilton
In his essay on the life and work of Hamilton published in the North British Review , Peter Guthrie Tait claimed that Hamilton's paternal grandfather had come over to Ireland from Scotland, bringing his two sons with him. He also stated that Hamilton's mother was related to `the celebrated Dr. Hutton'. However Hamilton's first biographer, Robert Perceval Graves, showed that Hamilton's paternal grandfather was established as an apothecary in Dublin long before the birth of his sons, and that other members of the family of the grandfather of William Rowan Hamilton were also settled in Dublin. (Hamilton's paternal grandmother, Grace Hamilton, Mc Ferrand, was however Scottish.) Graves gave an account of the ancestry of William Rowan Hamilton in the first chapter of his Life of Sir William Rowan Hamilton . He gave further facts, and presented detailed evidence supporting his assertions in the Addendum to the Life of Sir William Rowan Hamilton Robert Perceval Graves also stated, in the

by Sebastiaan Verweij
Peter Guthrie Tait (1831-1901) was a famous nineteenth-century mathematician, who moved to Edinburgh when he was still young, entering Edinburgh Academy when he was ten; there he excelled in mathematics. The study of topology is defined in the Concise Oxford Dictionary as "the study of geometrical properties and spatial relations unaffected by the continuous change of shape or size of figures". Tait was one of the first to make a serious attempt at knot theory, fuelled by the ideas of Thomson, who claimed that knot theory was a way into understanding the problem of atoms. This idea was quite wrong, but Tait made a considerable contribution to knot theory, and it is here that Morgan's poem takes off.
