John Synge 's father Edward Synge could trace his family back to the fifteenth century. The origin of the name "Synge" is described in the introduction to General relativity : papers in honour of J L Synge The name Synge is said to have originated with Henry VIII, who commanded a favourite choirboy to "Synge, Millington, synge". John Synge's mother, Ellen Price, was of Scottish origin, being descended from the Scottish Stuarts, in particular a Sir William Stuart who went to Ireland in the early seventeenth century. After being educated at St Andrews College in Dublin, Synge entered Trinity College, Dublin in 1915. There his achievements were quite remarkable, winning a Foundation Scholarship at the end of his first year. This scholarship was normally won by students in their third year of study. He was awarded his M.A. in 1919 in Mathematics and Experimental Physics. He received the Large Gold Medal for his outstanding work. After graduating, Synge was appointed to a lectureship in mathematics at Trinity College, but he only held the post for a short time, leaving for Canada in 1920. from 1920 to 1925 Synge was an assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Toronto. Then in 1925 he returned to Trinity College, Dublin where he was elected to a fellowship and also appointed to the chair of Natural Philosophy (the older name for Physics).

"The northern ocean is beautiful", said the Orc, "and beautiful the delicate intricacy of the snowflake before it melts and perishes, but such beauties are as nothing to him who delights in numbers, spurning alike the wild irrationality of life and the baffling complexities of nature's laws." JOHN MILLINGTON SYNGE (Rathfanham 16 April 1871 Dublin 24 March 1909),Vai alla pagina italiana. LIFE Coming from a bourgeois family
http://www.emmedici.com/journeys/eire/cultura/letteratura/esynge.htm
JOHN MILLINGTON SYNGE
(Rathfanham 16 April 1871 - Dublin 24 March 1909) LIFE: Coming from a bourgeois family he first studies at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and at Trinity College where he degrees, then to Paris where he comes in contact with the symbolist atmosphere. He travels to France, Germany and Italy observing and meditating and coming then back to Paris where in 1897 he meets the poet William Butler Yeats . Synge shows to the poet some of his works about the French literature but Yeats finds them insufficient; but having immediately understood the great abilities and possibility of this young talent he exhorts him to leave Paris to go to live for some time in the Aran islands, off the Galway bay, in order to learn habits, traditions and language of the Gaelic people.
Synge in contact with that nature of incisive beauty, near those plain and primitive folk, definitively forms his temperament of man and writer. He writes The Aran Islands, 1907 , kind of diary of his stay on the islands, and the dramas The Shadow of the Glen, 1903

John Millington Synge(1871-1909) The Playboy of the Western World Synge - a leading figure in Irish Literary Renassance - reflects gullibility, superstition and brutality - blends Celtic romanticism with modern realism - two elements in his plays: Irish peasantry and Irish speech I Background
  • Audience claimed that the play was a degrading representation of Irish sensibilities (Bowen 71). Literary historians have explained the townsfolk¡¦s sympathy with the deed as being the empathy of an oppressed people with anyone who rebelled against authority. The audience of the play saw it as a representation of reality rather than a work of art.
  • II. Characteristics of the play
  • The play is not merely a story of young innocence and love but of the mentality and actions of an entire community. The play is said to be a play about audience response (Smith xx). By presenting the three father figures in the play, Synge presents a comic but degrading form of Irish institution that shapes the life of most Irishmen. Old Mahon is an individual with scant regard for the citizens (Bowen 72).

    John Millington Synge
Born in 1871 in Ireland, John Millington Synge is one of the best known playwrights of Ireland. At the age of 19 he chose to study the violin and went abroad to Germany, Italy, and France. While in France Synge decided to alter the path of his career and became a literary critic. After a meeting with William Butler Yeats in 1891, Synge chose to travel the countryside of Ireland in search of Irish folklore. He took all that he learned from the people of Ireland and turned it into a number of plays. Most noteworthy of his plays is The Playboy of the Western World which was greeted on the stage of the Abbey Theater by an offended crowd that ended up starting a riot. Having been of ill-health for most of his life, Synge's health deteriorated rapidly until his death in 1909. Famous Works:
    • The Playboy of the Western World
    • Riders to the Sea
    • The Well of the Saints
    • The Aran Islands
    • The Shadow of the Glen

Synge hade 1906 blivit chef för denna teater, där hans sista pjäs, Deirdre of the Sorrows, framfördes 1910. tillbaka

Finding himself unequipped for a life in music, Synge left Germany for Paris and spent several years there as a literary critic. A meeting with W. B. Yeats inspired him to visit the Aran Islands in 1898. These islands would become the inspiration for all of his works, beginning with a journal entitled The Aran Islands . His first plays, In the Shadow of the Glen (1903) and Riders to the Sea (1904), were produced by the Irish National Theatre Society, a group consisting of Yeats, nationalist playwright Lady Isabella Augusta Gregory, and Synge; the group later founded Dublin's famed Abbey Theatre. John Millington Synge Synge was born near Dublin in 1871 and died in 1909. He received his degree from Trinity College, Dublin, then went to Germany to study music and later to Paris, where he lived for several years working at literary criticism. Here, he met a compatriot, William Butler Yeats, who persuaded Synge to live for a while in the Aran Islands and then return to Dublin and devote himself to creative work. The Aran Islands (1907) is the journal of Synge's retreat among these primitive people. The plays of Irish peasant life on which his fame rests were written in the last six years of his life. The first two one-act plays, In the Shadow of the Glen , (1903), a comedy, and Riders to the Sea (1904), considered one of the finest tragedies ever written, were produced by the Irish National Theatre Society. This group, with Synge, Yeats and Lady Gregory as co-directors, organized in 1904 the famous Abbey Theatre. Two comedies, The Well of the Saints (1905) and The Playboy of the Western World (1907), were presented by the Abbey players. The latter play created a furor of resentment among Irish patriots stung by Synge's bitter humor.

    JOHN MILLINGTON SYNGE

This document was originally published in Minute History of the Drama Purchase Plays by John Millington Synge B IOGRAPHICALLY the most remarkable feature of Synge's career was its brevity. In the six years which elapsed between 1903, when In the Shadow of the Glen was produced, to 1909, when he died, he rose from absolute obscurity to world fame, and provided us with six plays on which his reputation must rest." [ Following the completion, or perhaps we should say, the beginning, of his education at Trinity College, Dublin, John Millington Synge set out to see the world. On foot he travelled through Germany, Italy and France, absorbing the very essence of them through the lives, legends and literature of their people. It was in 1899 in a Parisian attic that W.B. Yeats discovered him. With the unselfish insight that is not one of the least of Yeat's claims to distinction, he realized that here was a real genius being wasted on various kinds of literary hackwork. He persuaded Synge to return to Ireland and devote that genius to the themes of Irish life and the needs of the recently initiated Irish theater movement. For some time after his return Synge spent his time renewing his kinship with Ireland, sensing the life and belief of its peasantry. Especially was he interested in those islands just off the west coast, and his famous one-act play

There he was saved for his native ireland by William Butler Yeats in 1899 and persuaded that he must write about his own land. He went off on a second trip to the isolated Aran Islands, where he studied the local dialects, characters, and folklore. He began to write plays of peasant life, employing the natural speech which he had learned. His first play, In the Shadow of the Glen , was performed in 1903 by the Irish National Theatre, of which Yeats and Lady Gregory were co-founders. In 1904, Synge's brief peasant tragedy, Riders to the Sea , was staged at this company's new home, the Abbey Theatre, and Synge became the Abbey's literary adviser. Other folk plays followed, including his comedy about a mock-hero, The Playboy of the Western World (1907), which caused patriots to riot at the theatre. Synge died in 1909.

The first practitioners of magic were not conjurers of idle spirits; they did not pull legions of attendant demons from the foundations, consult wraiths from the past, nor entreat incubi of the air. No, to strike awe, to bewilder, to sometimes entrance belief by the unearthly effects of their art, these first magicians used only such mundane props and skills as juggler's balls and legerdemain. Similarly, by my own research and claims of Synge, my intent was, and perhaps impetuously still is, to consider an artist whose work once rather violently fragmented an audience, and argue that, years later, his work has become a nexus for a nation. Seem alchemy? Proving so would necessitate my own enchantments, and even arguing for such an immodest assertion would exhaust many paper mills or fill entire gigabytes of virtual space. Accordingly, then, for this paper, my claims are restrained, and my argument modest even , perhaps, straightforward and logical. I contend that John Millington Synge's use of Celtic mythology and folklore in " Riders to the Sea " merely provides Irish men and women, whether Protestant or Catholic, of the South or of the North, a primitive and shared narrative of a singular people, however intractable their religious and political views may be.
