New kidney stone culprit unmasked

Calcium phosphate deposits in a kidney, indicated by arrows (Pic: Journal of Clinical Investigation
A 60-year-old old theory of kidney stone formation, long dismissed by physicians, may have to be revived following new research in the United States.
Led by Professor Andrew Evans of Indiana University in Bloomington, the study - published in the latest issue of The Journal of Clinical Investigation - found tiny crystals of calcium phosphate in the kidneys of people diagnosed as suffering from calcium oxalate kidney stones.
The crystals were deposited in the thinnest part - known as the loops of Henle - of the kidney's filtration system, which removes nitrogenous waste from the body and maintains water balance. Calcium oxalate is blamed for two-thirds of kidney stones in people; starting out as small crystals, they eventually grow too large to pass into the bladder.
Calcium crystals are known as the starting point for kidney stones, in the same way a grain of sand is the genesis of a pearl in an oyster. But the relative role of calcium phosphate versus calcium oxalate had been unclear, according to Professor Villis Marshall of Flinders University in Adelaide.

Concerning the Native American
T he following, with minor revisions, is from the pen of the late Rev. Warren Taylor. Rev. Taylor wrote with great care, and his statements may be implicitly relied upon as being as nearly correct as personal observations can make them.
W hen the first white settlers came to Marshall County, they found within its bounds a somewhat numerous branch of the Pottawattomie tribe of Indians. These Indians were divided into bands, the most of which or all of which, by the treaty of 1832, obtained reserves. The largest reserves were those of Aubbeenaubee and Menominee. The Aubbeenaubee Reserve was situated west of the Michigan Road, and in the southern part of the county, extending perhaps into the county of Fulton. The Menominee Reserve embraced a region of country to the southwest of Plymouth, its northeastern corner being near the western border of the town. These two reserves containing twenty or thirty sections each. The two later lay on the east side of Maxinkuckee Lake; the former was situated on the Tippecanoe River, in the southeastern part of the county.
T he Indian bands above mentioned, while living in this region, had several villages. The Aubbeenaubee village was on or near the southern line of the county, and about two miles to the west of the Michigan Road. From three to four miles to the southwest of Plymouth, in the neighborhood of the Twin Lakes, was a settlement of the Menominee band, which contained near one hundred wigwams. Around and among the wigwams were partly cleared fields, from which the Indians raised considerable quantities of corn. This settlement was partly on the north side of the Twin Lakes, and extended over one or two sections. The Benack village was near the Tippecanoe River, and was about five miles south of the town of Bourbon. There was also a village on the Roberts Prairie, and another on the Tabor farm, which was called Pashpo, from its principal chief.

The Daily Illini Grants were also awarded to the Office of Student Affairs and the Minority Engineering Program. A first-time grant was given to the Division of Rehabilitation-Education Services. These grants will be used to enhance the academic environment for students, said Lynette Marshall, assistant chancellor in the Office of Campus Development. The University receives $30 to $40 million from corporate donations each year, said Michael Ransom, the University's associate director of corporate relations. Corporate grants make up approximately one-third of the University's private support. Ransom said corporations usually specify where they want their funding to go. Some might give unrestricted financial support, but it is not common. Many corporations that donate gifts also recruit students. There are ongoing corporate contributions given by big names such as Caterpillar, General Mills, Abbott Laboratories and Ford Motor Company. All University colleges do corporate fundraising, where interested faculty members work closely with corporations, Marshall said.

    The Original Affluent Society
    -by Marshall Sahlins
    Hunter-gatherers
Hunter-gatherers consume less energy per capita per year than any other group of human beings. Yet when you come to examine it the original affluent society was none other than the hunter's - in which all the people's material wants were easily satisfied. To accept that hunters are affluent is therefore to recognise that the present human condition of man slaving to bridge the gap between his unlimited wants and his insufficient means is a tragedy of modern times. Destutt de Tracy, "fish-blooded bourgeois doctrinaire" though he might have been, at least forced Marx to agree that "in poor nations the people are comfortable", whereas in rich nations, "they are generally poor".
Sources of the Misconception "Mere subsistence economy", "limited leisure save in exceptional circumstances", incessant quest for food", "meagre and relatively unreliable" natural resources, "absence of an economic surplus", "maximum energy from a maximum number of people" so runs the fair average anthropological opinion of hunting and gathering The traditional dismal view of the hunters' fix goes back to the time Adam Smith was writing, and probably to a time before anyone was writing. Probably it was one of the first distinctly neolithic prejudices, an ideological appreciation of the hunter's capacity to exploit the earth's resources most congenial to the historic task of depriving him of the same. We must have inherited it with the seed of Jacob, which "spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north", to the disadvantage of Esau who was the elder son and cunning hunter, but in a famous scene deprived of his birthright.
