...about James Stirling
1981 Pritzker Laureate
James Stirling, 1926-1992, of Great Britain was one of that country's best-known architects particularly since his 1963 project at Leicester University, the engineering building. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he took his architecture degree at Liverpool University, but set up his practice in London.
In addition to the Leicester project already mentioned, his other major works at the time he was awarded the Pritzker Prize included a training center for Olivetti in Hasselemere; a History Building for Cambridge University; an expansion of Rice University in Texas, and numerous low cost housing projects, and residences. Since 1981, he has completed a major social sciences center in Berlin; a Performing Arts Center for Cornell University; and such major museum projects as the Clore Gallery expansion for the Tate Gallery in London; the Arthur M. Sackler Museum, an addition to Harvard's Fogg Museum; and the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart, Germany.

James Stirling 's father was Archibald Stirling and his mother, Archibald Stirling's second wife, was Anna Hamilton. James was their third son and he was born on the family estate at Garden, about 20 km west of the Scottish town of Stirling. The family were strong supporters of the Jacobite cause and this was to have a significant influence on James Stirling's life. The Jacobite cause was that of the Stuart king, James II (of Britain James VII of Scotland: Jacobus in Latin), exiled after the Revolution of 1688, and his descendants. Scotland was united to England and Wales in 1707. The Stuarts were Scottish but Roman Catholics and therefore they had only limited support. They did, however, offer an alternative to the British crown with an exiled court in France which had strong support from many such as the Stirling family. When James Stirling was about 17 his father was arrested, imprisoned and accused of high treason because of his Jacobite sympathies. However he was acquitted of the charges. Nothing is known of Stirling's childhood or indeed about his undergraduate years in Scotland. The first definite information that we know is that he travelled to Oxford in the autumn of 1710 in order to matriculate there. Indeed Stirling matriculated at Balliol College Oxford on 18 January 1711 as a Snell Exhibitioner.

James Stirling
Mathematician and surveyor. Born in Garden (Stirling), son of a Jacobite, who had been accused of treason and arrested when James was 17. In 1710, Stirling went to Balliol College (Oxford) possibly after studies in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Following the Jacobite Rising of 1715, Stirling refused to swear allegiance to the Hanoverian throne and thus could not graduate. However he continued his research in Oxford, subsequently moving to Venice (1717) and Padua (1721). In 1722, he hurriedly left Italy, to return to Glasgow, because the Italian glass-makers tried to assassinate him as he has discovered their secrets. In 1724, Stirling took a teaching post in London, growing his friendship with Sir Isaac Newton. He corresponded with many other mathematicians, including Euler. Stirling's main contribution was in the field of calculus, through his treatise Methodus Differentialis Mathematics was clearly not a lucrative occupation because, in 1735, Stirling took the post of manager of a mining company in Leadhills. In 1746, Stirling was considered as the successor to Colin Maclaurin (1698 - 1746) in Edinburgh, but his support for the Jacobites, who had occupied the city the previous year, meant this was politically impossible. Stirling's other interests were gravity and the shape of the earth, supporting Newton's view that it is an oblate spheroid. He also surveyed the River Clyde with a view to improving navigation and allowing Glasgow to become the commercial capital of Scotland.

James Stirling
When James Stirling was about 17, his father was arrested, imprisoned and accused of high treason because of his Jacobite sympathies. However he was acquitted of the charges. Little is known of Stirling's childhood or indeed about his undergraduate years in Scotland. The first definite information that we know is that he travelled to Oxford in 1710 in order to matriculate there. Political events conspired to keep him from graduating from Oxford, but he remained there for some time. In 1717, Stirling published his first work which extends Newton's theory of plane curves of degree 3, adding four new types of curves to the 72 given by Newton. The work was published in Oxford and Newton himself received a copy of the work. This work also contains other results that Stirling had obtained. There are results on the curve of quickest descent, the catenary, and orthogonal trajectories. In 1717, Stirling went to Venice. What Stirling did in Venice is not known, but he certainly continued his mathematical research. In 1722, Stirling returned to Glasgow, perhaps around the time that his friend Nicolaus Bernoulli left Padua. In 1724, Stirling travelled to London where he was to remain for 10 years. These are years in which Stirling was very active mathematically, corresponding with many mathematicians and enjoying his friendship with Newton. Newton proposed Stirling for a fellowship of the Royal Society of London, and in 1726 Stirling was elected. Stirling became a teacher in London when he was appointed to William Watt's Academy. The school's prospectus lists a course on mechanical and experimental philosophy whose syllabus included mechanics, hydrostatics, optics, and astronomy. While in London, Stirling published his most important work

James Stirling
J Stirling's early designs, especially for Cambridge and Oxford, often emphasized concept over aesthetic and utilitarian needs. His later works appeared more formal due to their influence from Post-Modern classicism. Criticized for his ability to continually alter his fundamental architectural principles, Stirling uses an experimental design approach that shows little commitment to one particular style. After his breakup with Gowan in 1963, Stirling evolved a rather playful variant of Postmodernism making use of unconventional building axes, complex geometric shapes, and brightly colored decorative elements. His New State Gallery, or Neue Staatsgalerie (1977-84), in Stuttgart, Germany, a combination of classicism and geometric abstraction, is considered by many to be his finest achievement. He was knighted shortly before his death.

James Hutchison Stirling
James Hutchison Stirling was a 19th century British Idealist philosopher. In 1865 Stirling's The Secret of Hegel appeared and marked the inauguration of a new era in the development of English idealism. In an article in the Fortnightly Review for October 1867 (republished in the volume Jerrold, Tennyson, and Macaulay ) the author passes a ruthless condemnation upon the spurious reputation for a knowledge of German idealism which had attached itself to the name of Coleridge, as well as, in a minor degree, to that of De Quincey, and fastens especially upon Coleridge's 'dreamy misapprehensions' and 'strange misrepresentations' of the Kantian philosophy. Himself profoundly convinced of the truth of the Hegelian system, he set himself, in the Secret , to explain and defend that system. Stirling undoubtedly possessed 'the temperament of genius,' and was a man of remarkable speculative insight; but his style, though often striking, is so marked by the influence of Carlyle, and he so resolutely declines to conform to ordinary standards of systematic exposition, that his work is almost as difficult as the original which it is intended to illuminate. Yet its importance, and its influence at the time of its appearance, are not to be underestimated; it certainly called the attention of the English-speaking world to the significance of a system which even Ferrier had pronounced unintelligible, and brought home to the English mind the necessity of coming to terms, not only with Hegel, but with his predecessors, Kant, Fichte, and Schelling.
