Simon Stevin
Simon Stevin (1548-1620), the Flemish mathematician and engineer, was born in Bruges and initiated the science of hydrostatics by demonstrating that the pressure exerted by a liquid upon a given surface depends on the height of the liquid and the area of the surface. While quartermaster in the army, Stevin invented a way of flooding the lowlands in the path of invading forces by opening selected sluices in dikes. The author of 11 books, he contributed significantly to the sciences of trigonometry, geography, fortification, and navigation and devised and urged the universal use of decimal fractions and decimal systems of coins, weights, and measures.

Simon Stevin (1548-1620)
In 1998 we celebrate Simon Stevin's 450-th birthday. In the low countries he is not only remarkable for his contributions to mathematics, physics and many other fields of knowledge, but also for his influence on the Dutch language. Like his contemporary Galilei he preferred to publish his findings in his native language and he coined new Dutch terms when necessary, many of which are still in use today.
Those who see the WWW as the means par excellence for the dissemination of knowledge will find it appropriate that a home page be dedicated to this remarkable figure who did so much to spread knowledge using the means that were modern in his own time.
We hope to extend and improve this home page in the course of the memorial year 1998.
One aspect of the Dutch version of this home page might escape those who are not familiar with that language: In what we hope is a playfull appreciation of Stevin's significance for the Dutch language, we will avoid the use of foreign words in the Dutch version of this home page. This makes the enterprise of building this home page similar to Stevin's work in one respect: whereas he had to coin new words for notions that were commonly expressed in Latin, we will have to coin new words for concepts that are normally referred to by English words.
Life and work of Stevin
Here you will find a short biographical note, a transcription of the titelpages of his works and a discussion of his significance for the Dutch language. (In Dutch)

Simon Stevin He was not only theoretically envolved with the scientific problems of his time, but also practically. He was the mathematics and mechanics teacher of Prince Maurits and he was an expert in the art of fortification (those who know our local history can learn from this why Prince Maurits could be so successful in fighting the Spanish armies), he developed the teaching program of a new school for enginieers in Leiden, he worked on an improved concept for mills, he wrote about the art of navigation, etc.. For short: he knew about everything which made our nation great in that time (and attractive for tourists now).
He argued that to make science useful it was not only necessary that all publications were written in the native language (therefore, he invented Dutch words for all scientific and mathematical terms known to him - most of which are still in use), but that it should also be simplified as much as possible. For instance, he was an ardent advocate of the use of decimal fractions and of the decimal system for coins, measures and weights.
One of his most famous reasonings, of which he was quite proud himself, was the proof that in an equilibrium situation on an inclined plane the weights of the bodies involved are proportional with the lengths of the planes. Nowadays we prove that using the sines of the angles that the planes make with the horizontal plane, and we decompose the weights of the bodies in forces parallel and perpendicular to the inclined planes. Stevin used an ingenious geometrical argument. He considered the following picture:

Simon Stevin Exchange Program
an international exchange program in the history of science
In 1993 eight departments for the history of science in the Netherlands, England and Northern America have established an international exchange program for Ph.D. students and staff. The basic idea of the program is to share one another's expertise and facilities, to the benefit of both students and staff. Ph.D. students taking part in the program will stay for one term at another department that complements training received at their home university. They will follow two or three courses; give a seminar paper; have informal discussions with students and staff; in some cases increase their command of a foreign language; and profit from the enriching experience of expert knowledge and a different culture. Members of staff will visit other departments to give informal and formal presentations, as well as to do research and teaching for a longer period. The program has no regular funding. Grants for specific exchanges have been provided by the Wellcome Foundation, the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research, and the Huizinga School for Cultural History.

Simon Stevin (1548 - 1620)
Born illegitimate, Stevin was raised in poverty and began his career as a bookkeeper before becoming a tax clerk around Bruges. In 1581 he moved to Leyden and eventually went to University in 1583, aged thirty-five, where he stayed for seven years. He earned a living from his inventions, which focused on the many canals and waterways around him. His machines included mechanical devices for dredging, a mill to pump water and a device to pull ships over obstacles. He developed and promoted the use of sluices, appreciating their military value in flooding approaching enemies, and researched hydrostatics to assess the stability of floating platforms used in military assaults. His work - the first in this field since Archimedes - showed that the pressure exerted by a liquid upon a given surface depended on the height of the liquid and the area of the surface. Fusing theoretical knowledge with practical skill, Stevin published extensively on mathematics, military and civil engineering and mechanics. He published the first theoretical treatise on mills, and patented improvements to their gearing and scoop wheels. He developed a triangulation instrument, the triquetium, and made important contributions to geography, navigation and trigonometry. In La Theinde (published 1585), he introduced decimal fractions to mathematics, writing 8.937 as 80913273. The first figure was the integer or unit of commencement (represented by the 0), and subsequent ones the prime, second and third represented by the 1, 2 and 3.
