JHU Systems Neuroscience Journal Club [Formerly "Cortex and Behavior Journal Club (BME)" and "Readings in Systems Neuroscience (ME:440.810/080.810)"]

Next Meeting: March 12, 2003 (Wednesday), 5:00 pm Location of Meeting: BME Library (Traylor 709, Medical School) Articles to be discussed: Nature. PDF file This year, we have decided to combine the systems neuroscience journal clubs that were formerly held separately at the Mind/Brain Institute and in the Biomedical Engineering Department. We had a number of crossover students last year who added a great deal to the energy and quality of our discussions. We hope that combining the two journal clubs will promotethis trend and increase cross-campus interactions between scientists working on different neural systems. The plan is to alternate venues week to week between the Mind/Brain library (341 Krieger Hall, Homewood campus) and the BME Library (Traylor 709, Medical School)
The combined journal club will function as a graduate-level seminar series on the current literature in systems neuroscience. It will also serve as a discussion group for systems neuroscience post-docs and faculty from the Homewood and Medical School campuses. All participants interested in systems/cognitive neuroscience are welcome. Each week, a student or faculty member will present a recent article selected in consultation with the course directors. The selected readings will focus on the neural mechanisms of perception, attention, motor behavior, learning and memory, as studied using physiological, psychophysical, computational and imaging techniques. Discussions and open exchanges of opinions are strongly encouraged.

A condemnation of the terror attack on the Swaminarayan Temple
Sep 24, 2002
Cambridge, MA
"We, the volunteers of the undersigned organizations, are shocked and horrified by the ghastly attack on the Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar on the 24th of September. We are dismayed to learn that as many as 30 people have been killed in this cowardly attack, and that many other people have been injured. At this moment our hearts go out to the families and friends of the innocent victims of yesterday's mindless shootings. We share in their grief and pray that they find the strength to overcome their loss. The perpetrators of this reprehensible act must be apprehended and swiftly brought to justice by a court of law; we urge the state to move expeditiously on this count. We also call upon the Government of Gujarat and the Central Government to take preventive measures to quell further violence, and to maintain a strict and impartial calm over the coming days, especially in view of the terrible violence over recent months in Gujarat, from which the country has yet to recover. Further, we urge all sections of the press to report on the current incident in a truthful and non-inflammatory manner. We fervently hope that the people of Gujarat and the rest of India will maintain peace and harmony. We urge people from across the country to form peace committees to guarantee the safety of their neighbours of all communities. Only by remaining steadfastly united can we, the people of India, foil the designs of the perpetrators of violence."

http://www.meadev.nic.in/tourism/temples/tirupati.htm
Tirupati Tirumala-Tirupati, one of the richest temples in the country, is the most venerated Vaishnavite shrine of Lord Venkateswara. It was patronised by the Pallavas, the Cholas, the Pandyas and the Vijayanagar kings. 130 kms from the city of Madras (Chennai), this temple is located in the southern Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. Tiru' in Tamil means `Sri'. Hence Tirupati translates to Sripati or Sri Maha Vishnu. According to the Puranas, the range of Tirumala hills represent the body of the serpent Adisesha, on which Lord Vishnu, the protector of the world, rests. The seven hills represent the seven heads of the serpent. Perched on the 860 m high peak of the Tirumala hills, the temple is a Dravidian masterpiece. The splendid Viman or 'Ananda Nilayam' rising protectively over the sanctum is the most arresting feature in the temple complex. It is plated with gold, as is the Dwajasthambam, or the temple flagpost. The innermost enclosure of the three 'prakarams', opened once annually, enshrines the two-metre high majestic black idol of Lord Venkateswara, bedecked with priceless glittering jewels, most striking of which is the diamond crown said to be the costliest in the world. Some people believe that the idol of Sri Venkateswara has the attributes of Vishnu and Shiva, the preserving and the destroying aspects of the Hindu Trinity. This conception is a happy compromise appealing at once to the Vaishnavites and Shaivites. The idol has four arms, two in the rear, one carrying the Shankha or the conch, and the other the Chakra or the discus, and two in the front, one in the Abhaya pose and the other resting on the hip. On both the front arms, the Bhujanga Valaya, or the girdle of the serpent, an emblem of Shiva can be seen. People from the Northern parts of India, worship Lord Venkateswara, as Balaji. It is praised by poets as `Bhuloka Vaikuntha'.
