IBN SINA (AVICENNA), MEDIEVAL UZBEK MUSLIM MEDICAL DOCTOR AND PHILOSOPHER
by Andrew Curry "Ibn Sina was a boastful bachelor with a fondness for drink who wrote some of the most renowned works of medicine and philosophy in the Arab world, a keen mind-for-hire who spent his life traveling across the tumultuous political landscape of 11th-century Central Asia. Known in Europe by his Latin name, Avicenna, he was a Renaissance man when most of Europe was stuck in the Dark Ages and he shaped Western thought for centuries to come. BORN IN 980 [C.E.] NEAR BUKHARA (IN MODERN-DAY UZBEKISTAN), Avicenna began his education early.

Donors celebrate scholarship awards Members of the Detroit area’s Arab and Chaldean-American community gathered at a festive autumn dinner in the home of Drs. Riad and Ghada Khatib to award scholarship recipients from the ibn Sina Endowed Scholarship Fund. Donors were able to meet School of Medicine Dean John Crissman and congratulate student winners. The evening featured authentic Middle-Eastern dishes prepared by members of the planning committee that has, in recent years, produced a series of successful fund-raising events for the endowment campaign. Physicians, medical students and other members of the Arab and Chaldean-American community raised $200,000 for the scholarship fund, named in honor of ibn Sina, the influential Arabic physician and scholar whose writings provided the basis of medical knowledge throughout the Arab world and in European universities for centuries. The evening’s highlight was the introduction of three current School of Medicine students designated as the first ibn Sina scholarship recipients, based on their academic records, service and demonstrated interest in Arab and Chaldean culture.

Introduction This 1593 version of Ibn Sina's Canon of Medicine has been digitized and published by the Saab Medical Library as a contribution to the online body of historical medical knowledge for research and teaching purposes. Hilda T. Nassar - Director, Medical Librarian
A short biographical note on Ibn Sina (Avicenna) by Abd al-Rahman al Naqib, professor at Mansoura University, Egypt: (This biographical note is part of an article orginally published in UNESCO's Prospects: the quarterly review of comparative education The man and his age The Sheikh al-Ra'is Sharaf al-Mulk Abu 'Ali al-Husayn b. 'Abd Allah b. al-Hasan b. 'Ali Ibn Sina (known in Europe as Avicenna) was born in the village of Afshana in the vicinity of Bukhara (in what is now Uzbekistan), in 370 AH (980 AD) - the generally accepted date - of an Ismailian family concerned with intellectual sciences and philosophical inquiry, all of which had its effect upon the scientific career of Avicenna. So Avicenna lived in the fourth century of the Islamic era, the most flourishing 'Abbasid period in respect of learning and knowledge, which stands in complete contrast to the political situation at that time. Learning was much in demand, scholars were numerous, libraries were filled with the outpourings of the scholars of Islam, and with translations made from the sciences of other nations in accordance with the desires of caliphs and viziers.

    • Ibn Sina (circa 1000 AD) Risalah. (Semaan's translation of above text:) Second Chapter On the Cause of the Formation of the Speech-Sounds It is the vibration itself that produces sound. The state the vibration itself is in, i.e., the continuity of its parts, its evenness, or unevenness, and its branching, produce the acuteness and the density (of the sound). The first two (namely, the continuity and evenness) cause the acuteness, the other two, the density. It is the state in which the vibration is, by reason of the forms imposed upon it by the various exits and distractions, that forms (each particular) speech-sound, for a speech-sound is an accidental form of sound audibly distinguishable from another sound that has similar acuteness and density. In reality, some speech-sounds are simple entities whose formation is the result of complete obstruction of the sound, or of the air which produces the sound, followed by a release impulsion. Others are complex entities produced by incomplete obstruction (of the air) though with release...
