What Is the Simson Line of a Triangle? Constructing the Simson Line of a Triangle (Interactively!)
  • Step 1. Extend the sides of the triangle. Step 2. Construct the circumcircle of the triangle. Step 3. Construct an arbitrary point P on the circumference of the circumcircle. (Arbitrary means the point P can be anywhere on the circle.) Step 4. Drop perpendiculars from point P to the three sides of the triangle. Step 5. Construct the line that passes through the three feet P( P( 2), and P( 3) of the perpendiculars constructed in Step 4. This is the Simson line.
You can drag the vertices of the triangle to change its size or shape or drag point P to change its location on the circumcircle. Sorry, this page requires a Java-compatible web browser. Definition The Simson line of a triangle belonging to the point P on the circumcircle of a triangle is the line passing through the feet of the perpendiculars dropped from the three vertices of the triangle to the opposite sides. William Wallace discovered the Simson line 1799, but it was named after the British mathematician Robert Simson. A Closer Look at the Definition of the Simson Line Why must the point P used to define the Simson line of a triangle be on the circumcircle of the triangle? Look at the following sketch, in which three perpendiculars have been dropped to the sides of a triangle from a point

See Charles Hutton, Mathematical and Philosophical Dictionary SIMROCK, KARL JOSEPH (1802—1876), German poet and man of letters, was born on the 28th of August 1802 at Bonn, where his father was a music publisher. He studied law at the universities of Bonn and Berlin, and in 1823 entered the Prussian civil service, from which he was expelled in 1830 for writing a poem in praise of the French July revolution. Afterwards he was admitted as lecturer at the university of Bonn, where in 1850 he was made a professor of Old German literature~ and in which city he died on the 18th of July 1876. Simrock established his reputation by his excellent modern rendering of the Nibelungenlied (1827), and of the poems of Walther von der Vogelweide (1833). See N. Hocker, Karl Simrock, sein Leben und seine Werke (1877); H. Duntzer, “Erinnerungen an Karl Simrock,” in Monatsschrift für Westdeutschland (1877), and E.
