Allen Shields was an undergraduate at the City College New York where his lecturers included Emil Post and Lee Lorch. His doctoral studies were at M.I.T. under Witold Hurewicz 's supervision and he received his doctorate in 1952. Despite the fact that Hurewicz Salem who, at that time, was half the time in Paris and half in M.I.T. Shields' first post was at Tulane where he learnt a lot of functional analysis and wrote papers on topological semigroups . He was appointed to Ann Arbor in 1955 and remained there except for two years (1959-61) spent in New York. Shields worked on a wide range of mathematical topics including measure theory , complex functions, functional analysis and operator theory. F W Gehring described his work in these words Allen's standards were high, his taste impeccable, and his ideas deep. He was one of the world's most versatile practitioners in the art of applying functional analysis to gain insight on and solve problems of classical function theory. He had a profound effect on the development of this subject through his research and his personal contacts with colleagues and students.

Deadly Radiation At and Past the Van Allen Shields
There is considerable evidence that the Van Allen shields, which start at an altitude of between 250 miles to 750 miles, protect us from deadly solar and cosmic radiation. ( Italics and bold in the below quotes are mine.) Herbert Friedman, in his book Sun and Earth , describes Van Allen's global survey of cosmic-ray intensity: "The results from Explorer I, launched on January 31, 1958, were so puzzling that instrument malfunction was suspected. High levels of radiation intensity appeared interspersed with dead gaps ... Explorer III succeeded fully, and most important, it carried a tape recorder. Simulation tests with intense X rays in the laboratory showed that the dead gaps represented periods when the Geiger counter in space had been choked by radiation of intensities a thousand times greater than the instrument was designed to detect. As Van Allen's colleague Ernie Ray exclaimed in disbelief: 'All space must be radioactive!'." Herbert Friedman later explains that "Of all the energy brought to the magnetosphere by the solar wind, only about 0.1 percent

SWINDON Vs ISLE OF WIGHT - 25th July 2002 Premier League Blunsdon was bathed in lovely evening sunshine as the Robins squared up to a high-flying Isle of Wight side in a meeting that was sure to have a bearing on the destiny of the Premier League Championship. Swindon had a good choice of guest for Paul Fry in the shape of Hull’s in-form linchpin Garry Stead, whilst impressive young Sprocket Simon Dyminski deputised for Ritchie Hawkins at reserve. Meanwhile, the visiting Islanders had lost Ray Morton to a scaphoid injury sustained in Jesper Olsen’s Testimonial at Newcastle on 7 July, with Stoke’s Paul Pickering being called up as a very capable guest replacement. Swindon started the meeting with great gusto as Stead made a lightning start, before cleverly blocking Danny Bird on the first turn and allowing Chris Neath to take a clear run around the outside. The result was never in doubt from that point and the efficient manner in which the mighty 5-1 was collected certainly bode well for the rest of the meeting. If Stead was fast from the trap in the opener, then Jason King was even quicker in Heat-2, as he surged away and went on to collect an untroubled win from the visiting duo of Gary Phelps and Nick Simmons, with Dyminski far from discredited in fourth place.
