An absolute virtuoso of his art form Jack plays with unparalleled feeling and total technical control. Now did I mention the man can sing? Jack has a set of pipes that are smooth as silk and as raw and jagged as rocks cutting through an ocean shore line. His vocal talents alone are an event to behold. Semple has played from Vancouver to Montreux, has worked for CBC radio and TV, won a Juno award, and shared the stage with a wide range of top artists, from Martha Reeves to k.d. lang. In the case of Jack Semple those roots found fertile soil on a farm just north of Regina, Sask., where a young Semple first picked up a guitar. "I grew up on a farm. I was the youngest of six kids. Two of my brothers played guitar and they taught me a few chords," said Semple. It was enough of an education for Semple to embark on more formalized lessons that included classical, flamenco and acoustic training.' "I still tend to play electric guitar in a flamenco way, which is kind of a unique approach," he said. Growing up in Saskatchewan it might seem typical that Semple's first move into professional music would come on a television called Country West. The show allowed Semple to touch elbows with a number of Canadian music greats, from Prairie Oyster, to Valdy, K.D. Lang, Sylvia Tyson and Colin James. "I got to meet tons of Canadian recording artists," he said. "That sort of motivated me to start my own thing." Semple's own thing was the start of the Luxury Blues Band, which while a blues band by name, covered rhythm and blues and jazz as well. For Semple it was a case of finding his musical home.

Very good. At this point in his career - 44 years old with four CDs under his guitar strap - he's a monster, a cave troll, a horde o' goblins lurking in the Mines of Moria (sorry; got Lord of the Rings on the brain), something rather "scary" being the idea of the concept I'm trying to get across here. Hailing from Saskatchewan, where there's something in the water that gives groove to white boys, Semple is back in the recording game with Live At Kaos, released with a three-night stand at the Sidetrack Cafe starting Thursday.
