Hermann Schwarz 's father was an architect. He studied at the Gymnasium in Dortmund where his favourite subject was chemistry. When he left school he intended to take a degree in chemistry and he entered the Gewerbeinstitut, later called the Technical University of Berlin, with this aim. Schwarz began his study of chemistry at Berlin but it was not long before Kummer and Weierstrass had influenced him to change to mathematics. The first of his teachers to influence the direction that his research would eventually take was Karl Pohlke. Through him Schwarz became interested in geometry. Schwarz attended Weierstrass 's lectures on The integral calculus in 1861 and the notes that Schwarz took at these lectures still exist. His interest in geometry was soon combined with Weierstrass ... ideas coming from geometrical considerations were translated by Schwarz into the language of analysis.

HERMAN SCHWARTZ TRAVEL AWARDS
The third Herman Schwartz travel awards will be selected by random drawing at the January 2003 Cactus and Succulent Society of America board meeting. After reviewing our current policies with Dr. Schwartz, several significant changes were made. Since many of our members are interested in cacti, it was decided to add South America to the list of destinations for which awards can be granted. Another important change was the removal of the restriction against those who had traveled to these places before. It is hoped that these changes will result in greater interest and a larger number of CSSA members in North America applying for the gifts. In the last two drawings there were only a hundred applicants in each drawing, which meant that the chances of success were one in twenty! Those are very good odds indeed and we hope that many more of you will apply and get the chance to see these marvelous plants in their native habitats. A description of the rules for application and the application form are included in this web pages.

Karl Herman Amandus Schwarz
Schwarz studied chemistry at Berlin, but Kummer and Weierstrass influenced him to change to mathematics. Schwarz attended Weierstrass's lectures on the integral calculus in 1861, and the notes that Schwarz took at these lectures still exist. His marriage was a mathematical one since he married Kummer's daughter. Outside mathematics, he was the captain of the local Voluntary Fire Brigade and he assisted the stationmaster at the local railway station by closing the doors of the trains. Schwarz worked on the conformal mappings of polyhedral surfaces onto the spherical surface. His alternative procedure for solving the Dirichlet problem soon became a standard technique. He also worked on minimal surfaces, a characteristic problem of the calculus of variations. His most important work was for Weierstrass's 70th birthday. Schwarz answered the question of whether a given minimal surface really yields a minimal area. The ideas in this work led Emile Picard to his existence proof for solutions of differential equations. It also contains the inequality for integrals now known as the Schwarz inequality.

Egon Schwarz
Egon Schwarz is Professor Emeritus of German and Rosa May Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Humanities at Washington University, where he he taught for 32 years. He is an expert on 19th and 20th century German literature and has made important contributions to the study of German literary figures such as poet Rainer Marie Rilke and novelist Herman Hesse. His book Verbannung (1964) was the first major study of the literary exiles who left Germany because of Hitler's regime, and his autobiography, No Time for Eichendorff (1979), details Schwarz's life in this hemisphere after he and his parents were forced to flee from Europe during World War II. He approaches literature from a historical perspective, studying history's influence on literary works as well as the influence of an audience on the meaning of a work. This approach was evident in the 1970 publication of an article on why young Americans during the 1960s elevated German author Herman Hesse to the status of cult hero. Schwarz argued that Americans discovered aspects of Hesse's work that had gone unnoticed by German scholars and the German reading public. In approaching the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke in his book, Stifled Protest: Politics and Poetry in the Work of Rainer Maria Rilke (1972), Schwarz created an ongoing controversy in Germany and Switzerland over his thesis that the mystical poetry of Rilke was influenced by the times in which the poet lived.

http://www.nhlaborlaw.com/recentdev/rdev11.htm
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN EMPLOYMENT AND DISCRIMINATION LAW ADA Requires Employers To Provide Reasonable, Not Necessarily Preferred, Accommodations
The United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit recently defined (and limited) the scope of employers' obligation under the Americans With Disabilities Act to provide reasonable accommodations.
In Stewart v. Happy Herman's Cheshire Bridge , 117 F.3d 1278 (11th Cir. 1997), the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit held that under the Americans With Disabilities Act, employers are required to provide reasonable accommodations to qualified employees with disabilities, not necessarily employees' preferred accommodations.
Plaintiff Stewart worked as a cashier in a Happy Herman's grocery store. Due to pelvic surgery, Stewart was unable to stand for long periods of time, and required frequent bathroom breaks. For six months Happy Herman's accommodated Stewart on her terms, reassigning certain of her duties to other employees; avoiding assigning her additional hours; and providing her frequent bathroom breaks. A dispute arose, however, when Happy Herman's reduced its paid lunch breaks from 30 to 15 minutes. Stewart complained, alleging that the new lunch policy caused her physical condition to deteriorate. In response, Happy Herman's offered Stewart a 20 minute lunch break; shorter shifts; and leave of absence/planned break time alternatives.
Stewart did not merely reject these proposed accommodations, she demonstrated her dissatisfaction by engaging in insubordinate, disruptive behavior at work. Not surprisingly, after Happy Herman's terminated Stewart for her improper behavior, Stewart brought suit against the company under the ADA. On appeal, the Eleventh Circuit rejected Stewart's ADA claim, holding that a qualified individual with a disability is "not entitled to the accommodation of her choice, but only to a reasonable accommodation."
